La Bernarde
About the home
La Bernarde is the last word in undisturbed tranquility. Beside the cottage is a generously proportioned salt-purified chlorine-free swimming pool for the exclusive use of the cottage's occupants. Both pool and cottage have uninterrupted views of the Serene valley and enjoy all day sunshine.
Approaching La Bernarde you cross the Serene via an old stone bridge, dating from Roman times, which leads to a 17th century mill. You then continue along the single dirt track lane through dense woodland for another half a kilometre until you reach La Bernarde itself at the end of the lane.
Just downstream from La Bernarde the Serene flows over a series of cascades caused by granite outcrops. Some of these can be used as water slides by those who enjoy river swimming. The path to this part of the stream passes through completely uncultivated woodland with a spectacular view of the cascades below. En route you will pass wild strawberries and you may be lucky enough to spot some of the abundant local wildlife. Hen harriers and buzzards circling overhead are an everyday sight. This woodland belongs to the property.
La Bernarde is a stone's throw from the riverbank where you can spend the day enjoying the shade and chilling drinks in the Serene. The nearby Roman bridge is a popular subject for artists. This is a particularly undisturbed part of the Serene valley and it is possible to walk for miles through wild woodland which starts on your doorstep. If you prefer something less adventurous and with more chance of finding a bar or restaurant there are many official 'Grandes Randonnées' nearby.

The Midi-Pyrenees / Aveyron region
In the area you will easily find facilities for canoeing, windsurfing, hot-air ballooning, pony trekking, mountain bike riding, and visits to limestone caverns. The Aveyron Gorges are nearby, the Tarn Gorges are a morning's drive away to the east and the Pyrenees are the same distance to the South West. If you prefer you can simply enjoy the undisturbed peace and quiet of La Bernarde and just venture out to sample some of the many fine restaurants in the area or to visit the vineyards of Cahors and Gaillac. There is a golf course at Albi, 30 minutes away.
The Najac area
The cottage is situated in the historic commune of Najac, which is listed as one of the prettiest villages in France. It is a town which, apart from being spectacularly picturesque, has a long history and retains many features from the days when its chateau was established as a fortress for the Count of Toulouse. A short drive away is the splendidly preserved medieval hilltop village of Cordes sur Ciel. A little further, and still within an hour's drive, is the red-brick medieval town of Albi with its famous cathedral and Toulouse Lautrec museum. Within easy reach are Villefranche de Rouergue, Rocamadour , St. Cirq Lapopie, Bruniquel, and many bastide villages - most with local markets.
