The Uttaranchal region
Uttarakhand (Hindi: उत्तराखंड), known as Uttaranchal from 2000 to 2006, became the 27th state of the Republic of India on November 9, 2000. Uttarakhand borders Tibet (China) to the north and Nepal to the east, while its neighbour states are Himachal Pradesh to the west and Uttar Pradesh (of which it formed a part before 2000) in the south. The region is traditionally referred to as Uttarakhand in Hindu scriptures and old literature, a term which derives from the Sanskrit for Northern Country or Section. In January 2007, the name of the state was officially changed from Uttaranchal, its interim name, to Uttarakhand, according to the wishes of a large section of its people. The provisional capital of Uttarakhand is Dehra Dun which is also a rail-head and the largest city in the region. The small hamlet of Gairsen has been mooted as the future capital owing to its geographic centrality but controversies and lack of resources have led Dehra Dun to be the provisional capital. The High Court of the state is in Nainital.
Recent developments in the region include initiatives by the state government to capitalise on the burgeoning tourist trade as well as tax incentives to lure high-tech industry to the state. The state also has big-dam projects, controversial and often criticised in India, such as the very large Tehri dam on the Bhagirathi-Bhilangana rivers, conceived in 1953 and about to reach completion.
Nainital / Bhowali area
Nainital is a glittering jewel in the Himalyan necklace, blessed with scenic natural spledour and varied natural resources . Dotted with lakes , Nainital has earned the epithet of 'Lake District' of India . The most prominent of the lakes is Naini lake ringed by hills . Nainital has a varied topography . Some of the important places in the district are Nainital , Haldwani , Kaladhungi , Ramnagar , Bhowali , Ramgarh , Mukteshwar , Bhimtal , Sattal and Naukuchiatal . Nainital’s unending expense of scenic beauty is nothing short of a romance with awe-inspiring and pristine Mother nature.

Guestbook
Recommend……………….The Hermitage – Kailash.
A holiday at the Hermitage – Kailash is the perfect setting for a family as much as for the adventure lover. The panoramic view is a compelling invitation for one drawn to walking or trekking. The fresh mountain air exhilarates you from the moment you step down.Children and even adults are energized into wanting to do so many things at once. The cosy well done interiors exude a warmth which instantly makes you feel you are home. The courteous staff welcomes you and any apprehension disappears.
All modern amenities are made available if you should choose to need any. However the first urge is to step out into the inviting lawn which overlooks a valley and a range of mountains beyond. It is pretty awe-inspiring specially since you have left the busy citylife only a few hours ago. It is as close to nature as civilization with Nainital a safe distance away.
At the Hermitage however tranquility prevails and the comfortable trappings provided are inviting. The view in the daytime & the evenings beside the fire in the warmth of a sitting room makes for the ideal unwinding and destressing getaway you can ever imagine. There is a choice of music too to go along and build the mood.
A spacious kitchen with help at hand provides for sumptuous meals whenever required. There is provision for special cooking for kids as well. The staff is equipped to handle a wide range of gourmet and satisfy all but you also have an option to make your own special meal.
Good housekeeping with clean linen takes care of the rest. The detailing to make you comfortable speaks well of the proprieters. Having got comfortable and fresh indoors it is time to discover nature. A host of activities are made available to choose from. Long aimless walks to planned treks, a trip to Nainital to soaking in the sun with a book you can do it all here.
Ultimate value for money it is a place I would recommend to couples, family and likeminded groups. A place to relax and come back rejuvenated !
