The Phuket Island region
Lying on the fringe of the Andaman Sea off the west coast of Southern Thailand, the island of Phuket is approximately 890km from Bangkok. It is Thailand’s largest island at 550sq km, roughly the same size as Singapore.
The name Phuket is apparently derived from the word bukit in Malay which means mountain or hill, as this is what the island appears like from a distance.
Phuket is surrounded by many smaller islands that add a further 70 sq km to its total land area. Phuket is separated from the mainland by the Chong Pak Phra channel at its northernmost point, where a causeway connects the island to the mainland.
Phuket is quite mountainous. There are a couple of peaks above 500m, the highest being Mai Tao Sipsong at 529m. Many of these are covered in lush jungle. The lowlands consist of rice paddies, plantations of rubber, pineapple and coconut as well as the only significant area of rainforest remaining on the island, Khao Phra Thaeo Park which is now protected.
Nai Harn area
Thailand. Nai Harn Beach phuket is little known treasure. Located on Phuket Island's quiet and beautiful south end, Nai Harn Beach is perfect for swimming and boating. There are a few restaurants and Nui Beach is another secluded beach nearby.Why stay in a Nai Harn Beach hotel when you can rent a vacation villa. Phuket island is undoubtedly one of the most attractive and exciting areas of Thailand. The local people are predominantly Buddhist and give everyone an exceptionally warm welcome. There are an enormous range of activities all at very low prices and geared to all different tastes and age ranges. Phuket's rainy season runs from May until October, Even in the rainy season it is sunny for good periods of each day and the temperature is hot with daily averages still in the high 20's.
Nai Harn area Nai Harn, Ya Nui, Laem Ka, Rawai and Freedom beach are all within 5 - 10 minutes and are extremely beautiful and undeveloped, ideal for romantic walks, family picnics or just relaxing in peace after a heavy night! They are a lot quieter than the package tour destinations of Kata, Karon and Patong though this is where one must go for jet ski's, parascending and water skiing. Nai Harn provides the ideal base to dip in and out of these areas and also explore the whole of Phuket. Thai massages are offered on Nai Harn beach, the ideal spot to relax in.
People flock from all over Phuket to watch the sunset and enjoy a drink on Promthep cape, just next to Nai Harn beach the holiday playground of the rich and famous.
There is a large Muay Thai camp 5 minutes from the villa which attracts many foreigners wanting to come and train with local boxers. 1 Day training sessions are offered.
There are a range of excellent local restaurants catering for every taste; for very good Thai cuisine we recommend Ruean Thai. Mimmi's and Chao Khun offer excellent Thai and Western food. These are just a few of many restaurants in the immediate vicinity.
Snorkelling and diving trips go from Rawai beach, 10 minutes from the villa. One can also hire a speedboat and go around the many uninhabited islands just off the coast.
There is horse riding 10 minutes from the villa.
One can hire sea kayaks or boats on Nai Harn beach, sailing lessons are also available.
There are several local spa's and health and beauty centres.
There are ATV tours, elephant safari's and a snake show 10 minutes from the villa.
On Nai Harn beach there is a monastery and about 20 minutes away is Wat Chalong Buddhist Temple.
Excellent night life is not far with Kata, Karon and Patong 15 - 30 minutes away. There are also numerous small bars in the immediate area and two night clubs open 'til 6 am, these are liveliest in the high and mid seasons.
Phuket has a number of high standard golf courses; the closest one to the villa is Phuket Country Club golf course which is 20 minutes away.
How to get there
Although Phuket is an island, getting here is very straightforward. The majority of tourists arrive through Phuket International Airport (HKT). However, you can also get to Phuket by road, rail (in a roundabout way), and of course by sea if you have your own boat.
Getting to Phuket by air couldn't be easier. Phuket is served by an international airport with a number of scheduled and charter flights from Europe and around Asia.
By Road Phuket is about 867km (539 miles) from Bangkok, with a travelling time of approximately 10 hours. There are many car rental companies in Bangkok, both international firms such as Avis and Budget, as well as local companies.
