The Valenciana region
Alicante City is a beautiful city that most tourists fail to discover. Most people fly into the airport and head north or south to the main holiday resorts, not knowing anything about Alicante, other than terminal and gate numbers.
Alicante has hundreds of years of history and each era from the past is evident nearly everywhere you go in the city centre. Throughout the year, there are festivals marking different events from the past, most notable are related to the “Moore’s and the Christians”.
When it comes to festivals, the good people of Alicante don’t hold back. The firework displays can last up to half an hour at a time (These can be watched from the balcony of the villa, by the way). And the parades last hours. Hundreds of people take part in the processions with incredibly detailed and authentic ‘period’ costumes.
You can find all kinds of restaurants in Alicante, but for genuine Spanish tapas, all the small passages and tiny streets behind the town hall, play host to countless open air tapas bars. They are mostly open during early afternoon and then from about 7 in the evening onwards.
The harbour is a beautiful place for a walk, with hundreds of boats to look at and lots of restaurants. Across the main road from the harbour, in front of the town hall is the “Explanada de España”. Every day this, very “distinctive” walkway is lined with market stalls and “other” traders.
Parking in Alicante is relatively easy, if you get there before 9pm. After that, you could be queing for several minutes. There are two car parks underneath the harbour that are fairly easy to get to and not as dangerous as it sounds.
Alternatively, you can get the tram from El Campello to the centre of Alicante. The trams run very regularly and are very cheap and also remarkably clean and comfortable. This is also a very good alternative for getting to Benidorm.
The area around Muchamiel incorporates the towns of San Joan and El Campello to the south, both with large beach fronts, and inland you have the village of Busot which is high up in the hills. The views from up there can be stunning, and there are plenty of walks to take in. Just beyond Busot is the “Coves Del Canelobre”. At €5 per adult, they are well worth a visit and the drive up to them through the mountains is breathtaking.
To the west of Muchamiel, is Bonalba golf and spa resort. This has an 18 hole championship golf course. Alicante Golf is situated in the town of San Joan. Designed by Seve Ballesteros, it is preferred by most local golfers to Bonalba as it is said to be more challenging.
San Joan and El Campello beaches, both have lots of bars and restaurants, mainly of Spanish persuasion although all of them cater for English.
