The Lombardy / Lake Como Area
Lake Como is a lake of glacial origin in Lombardy, Italy, which is some 47 km (30 miles) long north to south and is Europe's deepest lake at almost 1,350 feet.
The lake is known for its peculiar shape - a Y turned upside down which is due to its three branches, Colico, the northern branch, Lecco, the south east branch and Como, the south west branch.
The third largest lake in Italy, Lake Como is just half an hour from noisy, bustling Milan, a few minutes from the Swiss border and is an ideal venue for family holidays. It commands a striking position in a mountain landscape and its shores are dotted with picturesque villages, luxurious villas and parks.
An oasis of tranquility, Lake Como is the Italian equivalent of Beverley Hills and the list of people who've owned villas here includes George Clooney who has purchased a few properties here. Described by Wordsworth as ‘a treasure which the earth keeps to itself’, the Lake has long been famous for its appearance in the writings of such classical writers as Virgil, Pliny, and Claudian.
Musso area
The Western Shore The lower reaches of the western shore are the stuff of tourist brochures: wooded mountain slopes protect the lake from extremes of temperature and lush gardens abound. Many of the opulent villas that line the lakeside are still privately owned and on summer weekends the lakeside road is solid with day-trippers. The lake's only island, Isola Comacina, lies at the narrowest point of the lake, just before the waters open up to the warm climes of the nineteenth-century resorts of the Tremezzino. Menaggio, a little further north, makes a good base for trips into the mountains behind or across to Bellagio and Varenna. As you continue up the lake the shore turns rockier and less accessible until the lake spreads out into the marshes and flatter territory that accommodates campsites and windsurfers around Gravedona.
Musso The village is reared over by great marble quarries in the rock face of Musso called 'Il Sasso'. These quarries, since ancient times supplied marble for buildings and monuments such as the Cathedral of Como in the Lario region and "The Arco della Pace" (Arch of Peace) and the War Memorial in Milan.
Musso is characterised by old houses which boarder the Strada Regina and by low porticos near lake in the small square close to the quay. In the 1500s the Castle of the 'Medeghino' better known at the time as the adventurer and buccaneer Gian Giacomo de Medici, stood here. The hamlets however reach a higher altitude along the slopes of Monte Bregagno.
Places of Interest
The Church of San Biagio This is the parish church with three naves built in the late 1300s where a Roman church dedicated to St. Nazaro formerly existed. Only the extreme absidal part of this original church still exists. The current church was restored and enlarged in 1507.
The Church of Sant'Eufemia This white church which stands out and is visible from afar was built on the shoulder of the 'Sasso'. Legend has it that a woman from Sueglio who was put into exile because unpopular among her fellow villagers managed to row across the lake, without any difficulty, with a mere handsaw. Once she reached the rock of Musso she chose to live a life of retreat. Through her good deeds she gained the trust of the people of Musso who at her death decided to erect this church in her name. Still today the people of Sueglio, penitent for the spite shown, each year make a pilgrimage on this Saint's day. The current building was built in 1662 but the original and much older church stood inside the great fortress of Musso.
The Garden of the Blackbird This is a unique example of an exotic garden which however has been abandoned for numerous years. It was obtained by the noble Manzi in 1858 but sadly had a short life. It flaunted century plants, palm trees, Indian fig trees, camellias, sequoias; all this surrounded by romantic bridges, grottos, gorges and staggering paths overhanging the waters of the lake. The exploration of this garden is almost impossible and undoubtedly dangerous. At the most it can be observed from above St. Eufemia.
