Salmon and trout Fishing is available within a 20 minute drive with open season from March to September. The Mulcair River, with easy access at a network of road bridges, is a fishery controlled by the ESB to whom you pay a charge. A salmon license is required to fish the River Mulcair and tributaries for salmon (this can be purchased locally).
The Province of Munster region
Murroe is close to Shannon Airport, Glenstal Abbey, Clare Glens, equestrian centre, pitch and putt and the local angling centre. Excellent golf courses are within a 20 minutes' drive.
Murroe village is 2.5 hours from Dublin and 12 miles from Limerick City, close to Shannon airport. Nicely decorated and deceptively spacious, the house is in a quiet residential setting just strolling distance from the village. Being on the borders of three counties it is an excellent touring base - the Burren National Park and Cliffs of Moher in Co Clare to the Rock of Cashel in Tipperary, Birr Castle in Co Offaly and the Dingle Peninsula are all possible day trips. Murroe is home to Glenstal Benedictine Abbey set on 500 acres of woodland and a pleasure to enjoy.
Nine miles (14 km) east of Limerick city, on the hillside of Murroe Village, is the modern Benedictine establishment, Glenstal Abbey. It is a castellated nineteenth-century mansion that was once the family seat of the Barringtons (who founded Barrington's Hospital in Limerick city in 1820). The castle was taken over by the Benedictines in 1927 and transformed into a modern college run on traditional Benedictine lines. Among the beautiful structural features that have been preserved is a door, replica in stone of the Hiberno-Romanesque doorway of Killaloe Cathedral. The priory grounds are particularly beautiful at rhododendron time, when the hills are a blaze of colour.
