The North Spanish Coast region
Asturias is a natural paradise in Northern Spain, with a mild climate, beautiful unspoilt beaches, green hills and valleys and breathtaking mountains. There are lots of typical villages to visit as well as historic cities and monuments. It's an ideal region for walking, cycling, mountaneering, fishing, canoeing, etc. The regional cuisine is renowned throughout Spain, and eating out is cheap and plentiful. The typical drink is cider, poured and drunk in the Asturian way. The people are friendly and generous.
Muros de Nalon
Soto del Barco is ideally situated at the mouth of the River Nalón, which flows into the sea at the small fishing port of San Juan de la Arena. Here you can sample locally caught fish and seafood. There are two beaches - "Playa de los Quebrantos", which is 800 metres long, provided with lifeguard services and the European Blue flag. There are showrers, toilets, drinking water, beach bars, barbecues and play and picnic areas. The other beach, "Playa de Bayas", is an natural unspoilt beach at least 2 km long, with a nudist area at the farthest end.
Soto del Barco is on Santiago's Way, which you can follow on foot, by bicycle, or by car. Nearby there are pretty villages to visit, such as Cudillero, Pravia, San Esteban de Pravia, Muros de Nalón. Communication by both road and rail is excellent, and you can get to Gijón, Avilés and Oviedo as well as to the airport quickly.
