The North Spanish Coast / Asturias Province region
The Principality of Asturias lies in the northeast of Spain. The coast bathes in the Cantabrian sea and the region is home to the highest parts of the Cantabrian mountain range.
Washed by the waters of the Cantabrian Sea, this shore Spain offers some of the most breathtaking views in Spain, with quiet beaches that are surrounded by beautiful settings.
The journey along the Costa Verde begins in the west of Asturias, with picturesque towns of unique charm such as Castropol, with its beautiful urban quarter and wonderful views over the Eo estuary, Tapia de Casariego, Viavelez, Navia and Puerto de Vega. The next destination is Luarca, a traditional fishing port with a lighthouse and beautiful cemetery overlooking the cliffs. Another fishing town is Cudillero, with its colourful hamlet sat on the side of a mountain. The industrial town of Avilés provides travellers with a pedestrian urban centre looked down on by the old church of Sabugo (13th century) and, on the other side of the cape of Peñas, the fishing centres of Luanco and Candás. Slightly inland is the city of Gijón, with its ancient quarter made up of the Santa Catalina hill and the neighbourhood known as Cimadevilla. The eastern coast of Asturias is an invitation to visit its long beaches through historic localities such as Ribadesella and Llanes and fishing villages such as Lastres or Tazones. All of this accompanied by examples of American emigrant architecture as can be seen in Colombres.
Main towns to visit:
Oviedo capital of Asturias. A pedestrian historic quarter makes strolling in Oviedo a pleasure, from the University to the Cathedral, and from the palace of the Marquis of San Félix to the Camposagrado. A walk littered with statues which appear on the pavements on sites of historic importance. To take a rest, there are a great many squares and small squares filled with chigres (cider bars).
Hidden on the Asturian coast, Luarca is a quiet town of white houses which preserves all the charm and attraction of its seafaring tradition. Built around an S-shaped cove sitting between sheer cliffs, the historic quarter of Luarca, its promenade and the port are all worth visiting. A small river divides the town in two, although several narrow bridges are there to unite it. Its most characteristic buildings are the lighthouse, the chapel of Atalaya and the cemetery overlooking the sea, cut from the rock by pickaxe and the final resting place of the remains of the Nobel laureate Severo Ochoa, a native of this town. Luarca's traditional character is reflected in its chigres -old Asturian taverns-, where visitors can learn the art of drinking cider.
Cudillero is a small, picturesque fishing port which sits on the side of a mountain. Outstanding are its hanging houses with eaves and brightly-coloured windows perched on a horseshoe of steep cliffs around the port. It has many routes with viewpoints, among which it is worth mentioning the walk to the lighthouse, La Garita, La Atalaya or El Pico. Its two most important buildings are the Gothic parish church, which dates from the 16th century and contains wonderful baroque carvings; and the chapel of Humilladero, which is the oldest structure in town. The fishermen's taverns, which are located in a narrow cobbled square next to the sea, are the main tourist attraction.
Avilés is the third major city in the Principality of Asturias. Its historic quarter has been declared a Historic-Artistic Site, since it houses significant gems of civil and religious architecture. Some of the main attractions are the pedestrian streets of Galiana and Rivero, Plaza de España with its City Hall, the old church of Sabugo, from the 13th century, and the modern Santo Tomás de Canterbury. In terms of civil architecture, Avilés can boast the palaces of Valdecarzana and Camposagrado and the Palacio Valdés theatre. In 1980 came the opening of the new fishing dock and fishermen's guild of Virgen de las Mareas, whose market auctions almost 70% of the fish caught in Asturias, which has placed Avilés, despite a limited fishing fleet, at the head of the ports in Asturias in this sector.
Situated on the shore of the Cantabrian Sea, Gijón offers an attractive combination of seafaring flavour, heritage buildings and modern urban development behind the beach. Its marina bears witness to a history strongly linked to the sea. Key buildings have their roots in the city's past as a Roman settlement, in its development as of the 16th century when the Catholic Monarchs decided to establish a port here and in the boost given to these lands during the Enlightenment, mainly thanks to Gaspar Melchor de Jovellanos.
Ribadesella is a summer town. The layout is determined by a bridge which divides the fishing port in two. Every first Saturday in August, this bridge acts as the finishing line of the most characteristic festival in Asturias, the descent of the river Sella by canoe. Ribadesella has two clearly distinguishable sides: the east, which is the site of the old town, and the west, which is where you will find the excellent beach and cave of Tito Bustillo, a gem of European cave painting. Similar to Altamira, the cave is as remarkable for its stalactites as it is for its paintings. Entrance is restricted to 375 visitors a day, which means we recommend arrriving early in summer. It also has a museum housing prehistoric discoveries made in the area.
Llanes has the appearance of a historic town. Not for nothing has its historic quarter been declared a Historic-Artistic Site and it preserves major examples of civil, religious and military architecture.

Picos de Europa
The Picos de Europa consist of three important massifs that go by the names of the Eastern Massif or Andara, Central Massif or Urrielles and Western Massif or Cornión. The climate is characterized by humidity and constant rainfall, a fact that is determined by its proximity to the sea (barely 20 kilometres). The presence of snow is accentuated during the winter months, however, it is not unusual for there to be perpetual snow. The Park's special climate means that there are frequent fog banks, something that is greatly feared by mountaineers. As for its orography, the Park has an exceptional relief, where high summits alternate with deep gorges and canyons. The park boasts 200 heights of over 2,000 metres, and vertical drops of over 2,300 m. The Central Massif is the most abrupt of the three that make up the Park and the greatest heights can be found there: Torrecerredo (2,646 m), the highest summit in the Picos, Naranjo de Bulnes (2,519 m) or Pico Tesorero (2,570 m). The Western Massif is the most extensive, and it possesses high summits, like Peña Santa de Castilla (2,596 m), intermingled with meadows, hillside forests, beech and oak groves and moors. The famous Covadonga lakes can be found on this massif. The Eastern massif, shorter and lower, blends sharp crag with green pastures. The Park is crossed by four rivers channelled in deep gorges: la Hermida defile, crossed by the river Deva; los Beyos defile, by the river Sella; la 'Garganta Divina',(Divine Gorge) through which the river Cares runs, and La India defiles, though which the river Duje flows. There are numerous viewpoints in the Park from where you can admire its beauty. An interesting alternative is to use Fuentedé funicular, via which you can go up to a height of more than 1,800 metres above sea level.
Asturias, a natural and culinary paradise
Without a doubt, Asturias is a magnificent natural sea, mountain and country paradise with a very diverse environment. Protected on one side by the Bay of Biscay and on the other by the Picos de Europa mountain range, this region has always been isolated and protected from possible invasions and therefore has many deep-routed traditions and rituals. The typical Asturian is friendly and open, always willing to receive outsiders who wish to get to know their land. Its cuisine is based on cider, fabada (bean stew) and cheese, together with shellfish and fish.

Guestbook for Duplex in Asturias
Esther,
Some feedback on our stay at your apartment in San Esteban De Pravia as promised.
We found the apartment clean modern and well furnished, with nice views over the port.
San Esteban is an attractive small town and the people are extremely friendly and polite. The bars and restaurants are diverse from modern to the more traditional, I would recommend trying the local fish dishes such as chopra a la cidra.
Having a railway station in the town is a real boon as we were able to explore many of the larger towns and cities without the need for a car. Gijon, Oviedo and Aviles are all worth a visit.
More traditional Asturian towns such as Salas, Cudillero, Luarca and the old part of Grado are a must to get a flavour of the area. We also spent a lot of time in Pravia and San Juan de la Arena.
There are countless beautiful walks in the area, however, most have some steep sections and require a reasonable level of fitness.
We would have no hesitation recommending a stay at your apartment and hope to return in the not too distant future.
Best Wishes,
Angela Grandsoult & Stephen Cockburn
Hi Esther
Just wanted to let you know we enjoyed our week in your flat last week. We thought the furnishings and everything about the flat was first-class and could not fault it in any way. We were very comfortable there and also thought that San Esteban was a lovely little place and the surrounding countryside beautiful. On the first morning we woke up to find a triathlon happening on the promenade in front of our eyes, which was a bonus for my photographer husband. Unfortunately the weather was not quite as good but there is nothing one can do about that.
Thanks again,
best wishes
Shirley Heywood
Hi Esther

Stay April 2009
Dear Ester
We had such a wonderful time in San Esteban and will surely return. The Spanish was quite a challenge, but we managed. We were worried the last day as we were expecting the lady to come on Wednesday 6 May when we checked out. We had to get the 11h15 train back to Oviedo. We bought so many nice things in the area that we had to leave some of our clothes and shoes behind not to be overweight with our luggage. We did not know what to do with it, it felt sort of awkard to throw it away in the garbage, so if the lady threw it away it is ok.
You have a wonderful apartment and I am very tempted to go back to Asturias later this year to look for an apartment myself.
The people of San Esteban was amazed as we were the very first South Africans they ever saw or who stayed there.
Best wishes
Jan
Hi Esther, hi Steve
