Room for rent, short term
B&B | 1 bedrooms | sleeps 2
Room for rent in Kandalaksha, 5 min. walk from the train station and 15 min. from the city center. The room is somewhat rundown and decorated in the 1970s style but all works. Shared bathroom, shared kitchen (and you are welcomed to whatever you find in the refrigerator), washing machine, WiFi, two bicycles and whatever else you may need for comfortable living.
A very relaxed household, no particular rules except no smoking indoors please.
$25 per person per night. Someone who is looking for the best bang for the buck well be happy here. If you aim for luxury, probably that's not quite it.
The whole apartment may be free June to September.
Kandalaksha-related questions are welcomed. One of our jobs is maintenance of the English version of the Kandalaksha site, and poking our noses all over the city and area is part of it. So we should be able to answer most of your questions.

The Northwestern Russia/Saint Petersburg region
Far north-est corner of the empire. Very close to the border crossing with Finland, driving distance to a border crossing to Norway. The border crossing with Finland near Salla is one of very few Russian border crossing without a lineup.
As I'm filling this form, a hint "Try to get the reader into the holiday mood" popped up. Definitely not a holiday destination here except for a serious pervert. It is a cold, wet, and expensive corner of a country that does not have much to offer in the first place. If however you compelled to come here for whatever reason you can count on my all around support.
One thing that can't be denied is that the area is picturesque in the tough sort of way. It may be highly suitable for film makers. Seasons can easily co-exist here: while it is summer in early June by the sea, go into the hills and you'll find snow and credible winter scenery. It may be late fall in October but deeper inland it is already winter. You can find rocky mountains, cliffs, sand beaches, dunes, gently-flowing or mountain rivers, old-style villages, ruins and post-apocalypses scenery etc. etc. The region is loved by film makers who come here to do thrillers and disaster movies of The Dyatlov Pass Incident. I've never seen a place with such a variety of scenery.
The area immediately surrounding the apartment where we are offering you a room is of nondescript small-town Russia type. Four or five story buildings put up just before the war (ours was build in 1939) or in the 60s or 70s. A huge crumbling military compound - a whole city in fact - very close by. But close to a huge park that makes one massive with the real forest. Guess the area will suit a connoisseur of things weird and out of this world. Photos of the immediate neighbourhood and the wider area will be posted soon.
