The Murcia region
The Costa Calida and Murcia region of Spain has over 300 days of sunshine per year. An ideal year round location for a short break or holiday.
Complemented with excellent sporting facilities. Over 10 fantastic golf courses including 6 Jack Nicklaus designed courses and others designed by the likes of Dave Thomas. With courses to suit all standards from the 9 hole pitch and putt seaside course on the La Manga strip to a variety of PGA standard courses which will test and golfer. The amazing sports facilities of La Manga Club, including 30 Tennis courts, 3 golf courses, multiple football pitches, cricket, bowling and more. Horse riding, cycling, kite surfing (Red Bull championship events have been held here), windsurfing and other water sports ensure there is something for everyone looking for sports and activity during their visit.
The region of Murcia is packed with history, from the ancient town of Cieza in the hills dating back to the 13th century to the recently uncovered Roman amphitheatre now open to the public in Cartagena. The La Union area has many mines some of which are part of a museum and open to the public.
The sea nature reserve just off the coast near Cabo de Palos is an amazing dive venue recommended by Jacques Cousteau with many diving companies in the area.
The Mar Menor salt water lagoon (Europe's largest) is no more than 10 metres deep and has year round temperatures higher than the Mediterranean which is in some places only 100m from its eastern shore, separated by the "La Manga Strip".
The large cities of Cartagena and Murcia offer everything a shopper would need and there are various shopping centres some open 7 days a week. All tastes are covered from designer boutiques to beach shops offering everything from buckets to bikinis.
There are excellent road routes so getting from A to B is simple and usually quick.
El Algar is in the southeast of the region of Murcia, just a few minutes inland from the Costa Calida coast and the Mar Menor. It is also just 15 minutes drive from the San Javier Airport, making it easy to reach and popular with visitors. The small town is a typical Spanish community with local shops and a few restaurants and bars. Further shops and restaurants can be found nearby at La Union and Cartagena.
The area still retains the essence of authentic Spain and is not over-developed. The Mar Menor and the La Manga Golf Club and Resort are close by where many shops, restaurants and bars can be found. La Manga Resort also has a luxury spa, tennis and football academies and some of the best golf in the area. Further afield there are five other golf courses including the Haciendo del Alamo Golf Club which boasts the longest layout in Spain. La Serena Golf Club is located along the Mar Menor and Roda Golf and Mosa Trajectum Golf Club also have excellent amenities close to El Algar.
The area has superb sandy beaches and crystal clear warm waters for bathing, swimming, boating, windsurfing, jet skiing and generally enjoying the year-round sunshine. Quieter sandy coves can be found further along the coastline for those who prefer a quieter lifestyle.
El Algar is ideally located for those who enjoy walking and cycling in this lovely area of Spain. The Sierra Espuna National Park has some stunning scenery and the Sierra de Carrascoy has a mountain range which is a paradise for walkers, nature lovers and climbers.
The historic city of Cartagena is just 14km from El Algar and offers great shopping, museums, churches, boat trips around the port and superb local restaurants.
