The South Wales / Swansea/Bridgend/Neath region
Designated as Britain’s first area of outstanding natural beauty – and deservedly so because Gower has some of the most beautiful scenery you are ever likely to see.
Just 18 miles long and less than 8 miles wide the area has nearly 400 miles of public rights of way, and 23 nature reserves. Gower offers a great variety of beaches and coves which attract everyone from surfers to the more relaxed dog walkers and sun worshippers.
Mumbles area
Mumbles is generally known as the Gateway to Gower. Being a seaside village everything is within walking distance - and there’s plenty on offer! The promenade, which is also a cycle path, runs all the way from Swansea to Mumbles Pier - a stretch of approximately 5 miles. Halfway between the two is the Lido at Blackpill, a safe haven for children to play on the beach, by the pool or on the many playground attractions.
Further along the promenade is Oystermouth where there are plenty of pit stops for ice ream and coffee or something stronger if it takes your fancy. Try a Joe’s ice cream - probably the best ice cream in Wales!
A little further on and you will pass the tennis courts, the bowling green and the park where there’s a children’s play ground, crazy golf and even a boules green – bring your own boules! There is a choice of excellent golf courses.
Right at the furthest end of the promenade is the most famous landmark of Mumbles - the Pier, with its slipway housing the Mumbles Offshore Lifeboat. Here you will find further attractions such as ten pin bowling, and an ice rink. There is often live entertainment at weekends over the summer holiday period.
Around the corner and stretching out to sea are Mumbles Head and the Lighthouse. At low tide you can walk out to the island and take a closer look. This is where Bracelet Bay begins – a pretty bay with some sand and many rock pools. There’s also a café and restaurant with spectacular views out to sea. On the other side of the cliff is Limeslade, a small sandy cove sheltered by a rockface, with more rockpools to explore.
Just a little further along is the coastal path which takes you all the way to the pretty swimming bay of Rotherslade with its beachside café – very popular with tourists and locals. The next bay is Langland – renowned for its green and white painted beach huts – a surfers’ paradise. Stroll along the coastal path and enjoy the wonderful scenery until you come to Caswell Bay a beautiful sandy bay, where there are further facilities, including the Surf Café (which offers homemade snacks and light meals), two kiosks, and a surf school.
When it comes to eating, Mumbles has plenty to choose from with a wide choice of restaurants that includes everything from fine dining at Knights, PA’s or Patricks, to Mediterranean, Indian, Chinese or Italian. If you prefer to cook your own food you can enjoy perusing the shelves of the local deli’s, green grocers, fishmongers or butchers a rare luxury these days. And if you are lucky enough to visit during the first Saturday of the month you can visit the local produce market.
The main shopping street in Mumbles is Newton Road, which runs from the seafront at Oystermouth, all the way up the hill to Newton – a village overlooking Mumbles. Here you will find an interesting mix of individually owned designer boutiques, gift shops and cafes. Just up the hill, on the right is Oystermouth Castle a good place to stop and admire the view, and further up the road is Underhill Park a pleasant place to play ball games or picnic. All of this is within easy walking distance.
Half an hour by car will take you to Rhossili Bay, a wide beach with miles of golden sand, when even on a busy day it never feels crowded. At one end is Burry Holmes, an outcrop of land, with a tiny chapel. Beyond the headland is Broughton Bay which has an abundance of sand dunes. At the other end of Rhossili Bay is Worms Head which rears out of the sea with its impressive Blow Hole which you can explore at low tide, and up on the cliff top is the village of Rhossili where there are a few shops and cafes with some amazing views over the bay – watch out for the paragliders.
The village of Llangennith is half way along the bay and about a mile inland. There is a campsite and caravan park set back from the beach with parking, a café and facilities – a good base if you want to enjoy the beach and popular with surfers. With only a pub and a surf shop the village of Llangennith remains untouched, but the pub fayre is fairly inexpensive with nice views over the bay complimented by a very tasty Gower Special pizza (cockles and bacon).
Further along the coast is Port Eynon, a village of white washed cottages surrounding a church which, it is believed was founded in the 6th century. There is a fairly quiet sandy beach, which has parking close by, and is patrolled by lifeguards in the summer months. The village has a shop, a public house and a café (open in season).
Oxwich is the next bay along and probably the busiest of the beaches on Gower with good facilities. The Oxwich Bay Hotel offers bar meals as well as a restaurant and the beach itself has a water sports club where you can learn to sail or surf, wakeboard or take a doughnut ride - and if you don’t feel like driving to Oxwich you could travel by water taxi.
At the other end of Oxwich is Three Cliffs Bay (finalist on TV’s ‘Britain’s favourite view’ programme) – one of the most photographed beauty spots on Gower. Here a river meets the sea, sheep graze on the grassy verges overlooking the beach, wild ponies roam freely and the board walk winds its way up to Pennard Castle. There’s a lot to absorb in just one snapshot.
A short walk away through the woods and inland towards the South Gower Road is Parkmill, where you will find the Gower Heritage Centre with its many attractions for all the family including an 800 year old working water mill. A few yards away are 70 acres of peaceful Parc le Breos where you can take a quiet stroll, hire bikes or enjoy a day out on horseback.
At the centre of the peninsula is the lofty moor land called Cefn Bryn, one of the highest points on Gower, and the burial ground of the legendary King Arthur. From here, on a clear day you can see as far as Devon to the south and the Black Mountains to the North.
The village of Reynoldston is just across the green, home to the King Arthur Hotel where some of the best pub fayre in the area can be found.
