The Western Cape region
Having travelled the globe many times over, we have chosen Cape Town for our second home. We love the variety of activities, the beaches, the vineyards, the wildlife, the great food and drink, the spas, and almost all activities at prices well below what you would pay in the UK. Cape Town is very multicultural with a strong British, Dutch and Malay influence. There is no more relaxing way than to spend the evening watching the sun set over Bantry Bay or Chapman's Peak Drive.
The gardens at Kirstenbosch are stunning for even the most uninterested botanist, the beach at Noordhoek goes on for miles, and is rarely crowded. Table Mountain is an iconic sight, and afternoon tea at the Mount Nelson, a step back in time. The drive to Cape Point is scenic not to mention the baboons that will greet you on your journey. The highlight of every trip for us is a visit to Bouilders Beach, where the penguins waddle up to you, and pose for photos.
Muizenberg / Capricorn Beach Village area
Muizenberg is located on the west side of False Bay. Located on the M4 (Main Road) between Tokai and Kalk Bay. Muizenberg is famed for Surfer's Corner Beach and the former cottage of Cecil Rhodes. A weekly Flea market at Sunrise Beach (Sundays) sells many of the souvenirs you'll want to take home, without the prices of the Waterfront, or the crowds or hassle of Green Point market.
The world famous Steenberg Golf Course is only 10 minutes away. The vineyards of Constantia are a 15 minute drive, try the River Cafe at Constantia Uitsig (the sticky vinegar tart is divine); and the spa at Mangwanai in Kuils River offers a remarkable package for 2, only 25 minutes away. The picturesque village of Kalk Bay is 10 minutes away, and a seafood lovers paradise. During South African Winter, Whales are often seen in False Bay any where from Muizenberg to Fish Hoek to Simonstown.
How to get there
British Airways and South African Airways fly daily non-stop from Heathrow to Cape Town. Virgin Atlantic fly during UK winter from Heathrow to Cape Town non-stop. KLM and Lufthansa fly from the Regions to Cape Town via Amsterdam or Frankfurt respectively.
Good deals are currently available on Emirates via Dubai; (i.e. Birmingham-Dubai-Cape Town); while this does add 4-5 hours flying time it also has to be balanced with the fact you avoid the journey to Heathrow.
Air Namibia fly Gatwick-Windhoek-Cape Town, they usually offer the best Business Class fares. As I work in the travel industry, I am always happy to help point guests in the right direction for the best deals.
Always book a rental car with a nil excess. Some companies will charge you up to R10,000 for any accidents, thefts or damage to vehicle even though they claim to be "All Inclusive". Can advise the best companies we have rented from.
