Key Info
  • Great for children of all ages
  • Car essential
  • Pets welcome
  • Private garden

Between Ironbridge Gorge and Much Wenlock, this extension to an Edwardian villa has 3 doubles, generous spaces and a wonderfully light atrium, all looking out to an Area of Outstanding Beauty, private gardens, croquet and alfresco eating: a perfect Shropshire base.

This three double bedroom house has at its heart a two storey atrium looking over private gardens and open hillsides. Contrasting the adjacent Edwardian country house of Oakdale, emphasis is on minimal and modern. Conceived as a natural base for explorers and walkers, the Atrium has been fashioned from former stables and yard and cleverly matched to adjoining buildings.

Upstairs is a large double bedroom and a further two twin bedded rooms, all with memory foam comfort and black out blinds: the bathroom with shower, bath, WC and basin is also at this level. The large well equipped kitchen, dining area with barbeque patio and the spacious living room are at ground level: all have underfloor heating doors to the gardens and views to surrounding countryside. Terraced and sloping lawns with petanque and croquet are open to guests and then, setting out from the grounds there are walks up to Wenlock Edge or down to the River Severn, then beyond, to lronbridge, Coalbrookdale or Coalport.

Or, just relax back at the Atrium. Inside there is lcd TV, Blu-ray, I-Player, wireless internet, an internet phone, a well stocked library of books and dvds, games for all the family. Outside . . . open fields, woods and plenty of wildlife including large herds of wild deer, peregrine falcons, owls, bats and woodpeckers. . . . but very few humans.

The Shropshire region

Shropshire, maybe one of England's quiet counties but don't be deceived; there's still plenty to see and do. Shropshire has over 90 places to visit - historic houses and castles with beautiful gardens, the famous Ironbridge, museums and family attractions.

Shropshire has many traditional market towns including gourmet Ludlow and the county town of Shrewsbury. Shrewsbury almost surrounded by the River Severn and birthplace of Charles Darwin, is a medieval delight of black and white buildings.

Along with such monuments as the Acropolis, the Taj Mahal and the Great Wall of China, the spectacular Ironbridge Gorge has been classified as a World Heritage Site since 1986.The Gorge was awarded World Heritage status by UNESCO for the area's unique contribution to the birth of the Industrial Revolution in the 18th century which had a worldwide impact.

300 years ago this was the world's technological hotspot where Abraham Darby I first perfected the use of coke to mass-produce iron. Entrepreneurs and Iron masters such as William Reynolds and John Wilkinson made good use of this wonder product. Wilkinson was even buried in an iron coffin!

The surviving built and natural environment with its museums, monuments and artefacts, including the world famous Iron Bridge of 1779, serve to remind us of this area's unique contribution to the history and development of industrialised society.

Much Wenlock

Sitting on the north tip of historic Wenlock Edge, Much Wenlock is a medieval market town that lies on the way to Bridgnorth from Ironbridge. It's now gaining celebrity status too with the Olympic mascot "Wenlock", being named after it, as it's the birthplace of the man who inspired Baron de Coubertain to re-launch the modern Olympic games that we know today.
