A French country farmhouse set in the rolling hills of the Cantal in the southern Auvergne.

There is a swimming pool heated by solar panels, and a spacious garden for relaxing. The house backs on to woodland crossed by little streams, and there are pleasant walks in all directions.

It is a perfect holiday home for families with children, with lots of freedom to explore the countryside. It is also ideal for anyone looking for a beautiful and peaceful retreat. We are just 4 km from Mourjou village, with a relaxing restaurant, the Auberge de Mourjou. The area is famous for its chestnut trees: there is a big chestnut fair held annually in Mourjou at the end of October. All through the summer there are charming fêtes celebrating local produce, from cherries to pork, and local traditions from baskets to accordians. You can really get in touch with the country way of life, and you'll find that you can eat very well too. For the more energetic there are hills for you to climb, bicycles for you to borrow, and canoeing and kayaking on the nearby river Lot.

The house is all on one level. It has a large double bedroom with an additional single bed and space for a cot or childs bed. There is a second bedroom with a double bed, and a third bedroom with bunk beds. The sitting room has two sofas and an inglenook fireplace with a wood burning stove. There is free wifi and a big selection of books and board games as well as a TV and DVD player. The kitchen is composed of a scullery and separate breakfast room with a big cherrywood farmhouse table. There is a modern family shower room with large walk-in shower, WC and washbasin. The garden is equipped with table and chairs for al fresco dining and there are swings, hammock and sun loungers by the pool.

We are only 45 minutes drive from Rodez airport in the Aveyron. The airport has cheap Ryanair flights from Stansted and Dublin, as well as flights from Paris.

The Limousin/Auvergne region

The Auvergne is one of Frances best kept secrets and one of the most beautiful regions. Volcanic mountains, forests and mountain streams gradually turn into rolling hills dotted with small farms criss crossed by deep valleys full of undisturbed wildlife, deer, boar red squirrels, even genets. The bird life is also wonderful with buzzards, kites, harriers and owls as well as many varieties of wood peckers, hoopoes and golden orioles just to name a few that are less common in the uk. The climate is good, usually very warm in the summer with occasional thunder storms, wonderful autumn colours and cold winters often with snow but so far we have never been snowed in. The spring is probably the most beautiful time of year May and early June are a mass of wild flowers and blossom.

The tour de france almost always passes near by making the most of the steep mountains and there are always cycling enthusiasts to be seen testing themselves on the many hills, the area is also ideal for walks with footpaths marked from every village.

Aurillac has an international festival of steet theatre and music during August but there are fetes throughout the Cantal, Aveyron and Lot every weekend with fireworks and village meals that all are welcome to.

We are situated in the southern part of the Cantal very close to the Aveyron and the Lot and we tend to share their warmer weather rather than the climate found in the mountains. The area is famous for its cheese production boasting five AOP cheeses. The local cattle are easily recognised as Salers by their rich chestnut thick shaggy coats and crazy horns that grow in any direction. The cheese produced from the summer mountain pastures is known as Saler while the winter milk produces Cantal cheese. Local markets are good places to sample all the fine food produced in the area, cheeses and cured hams, dried sausage, pates, and all sorts of charcuterie as well as fresh home grown vegetables and trays of strawberries, apricots, melons and peaches.

"An excellent family holiday in beautiful surroundings"

We spent two weeks in this lovely cottage with a pool with our 3 children. One of the most relaxing holidays we've had. Really family friendly home and owners - which takes the pressure off hassled parents. The cottage was fine for us clean, beautiful bedding and very comfy bed in the main bedroom. Chickens roaming in the garden - entertains the kids plus fresh eggs given to us. We received good tips on where to eat and were generally surprised by how reasonable it was eating out. Easy to get to Figeac and Aurillac - just such a pretty region of France. we took the kids on the pedalorail and go karting - the latter was amazing. Finally owners were kind enough to loan and adjust bicycles for us too

We always enjoy it when children make the most of the pool and garden that is what it is there for and we are so glad you all had such a good time.

"Luxury accommodation with marvellous views"

Chez Caro lived up to all expectations. All rooms inside were attractively furnished, kitchen was well-equipped, bathroom luxurious, beds extremely comfortable, and the swimming pool was just perfect. It was a bonus to have such extensive and lovely views, from both inside and outside of the house, and there were thoughtful touches everywhere, especially in the welcome pack. The best thing was sitting watching the sunsets, different every day, in a totally quiet and peaceful environment. No negative comments to make whatsover. Our hosts couldn't have been more helpful.

We are so pleased that you enjoyed your holiday and that you too loved the peace and calm and the views.
