The Bequia region
To find something special, to discover the extraordinary, one has to search for it. And there, lies the secret of this island. Visitors do not just arrive in Bequia, they discover it like an amazing treasure.
The Windward Islands, especially the tiny Grenadines, are renowned as one of the world's most beautiful holiday destinations. Bequia is a jewel and is situated within this chain of islands, located west of Barbados. It is part of the State of St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
Bequia provides a unique atmosphere that blends total relaxation with a wealth of interesting activities. Here there are no crowds but a very special lifestyle which brings people together. Bequia welcomes visitors as part of the community and expect to be treated as a guest and friend, not just a 'tourist'.
While one reads all about the more visited Caribbean destinations such as the Virgin Islands, Jamaica, the Caymans, and St. Martin, it's often hard to find information about St. Vincent and the Grenadines. One reason is that St. Vincent, a bountiful island with vast coconut and banana plantations, in the past never primarily depended on tourism as a source of income, and another is that the Grenadines are remote and can only be reached by yachts or commuter airlines. As a result, these islands are the perfect haven for travellers searching for quiet, beautiful getaways surrounded in natural splendours, rather than islands full of glitzy hotels, casinos and jet loads of tourists.
The romantic island of Bequia (pronounced Bek-way) was named the island of the clouds (although some now say it was named the crutch because of its shape) by the Carib Indians and has changed little with time. Due to its seclusion from the rest of the world, Bequia has built up a strong seafaring history, with age-old traditions in boat building, fishing and even whaling, being one of the few places in the world where limited whaling is still allowed by the International Whaling Commission. It has also been a sanctuary for sailors long before any other visitors discovered the Grenadines.
Gold-sandy beaches, many of which disappear into coves that are excellent for sailing, scuba diving and snorkelling, encircle Bequia. The centre of the island is hilly and forested, providing a dramatic backdrop to the bays and beaches. Admiralty Bay, the island's natural harbour, is a favourite anchoring spot for yachtsmen from all over the world, and here visitors can enjoy the quaint waterfront, lined with bars, restaurants and craft shops. Isolated enough to remain relatively unspoiled, yet lively enough to be stimulating and entertaining, Bequia provides a blend of the old and new that many find perfect.
On Bequia you will meet some of the friendliest people in the Caribbean that will welcome you to the island and make you feel at home immediately. It is also a great place to make new international friends from all over the world, go on a day sail, go hiking, or just 'lime' under a coconut tree with your favourite beverage. Bequia's simple, unhurried lifestyle and beauty boasts a magical charm that leaves visitors wanting more.

Eleven days..... into a six week Island hopping, Caribbean adventure i was lucky enough to reach Beautiful Bequia, my plan of 'non-action' was to spend time alone in a tranquil and peaceful setting and digest my journey so far ~ Arriving up at the Old Fort was a wonderful suprise of calm and serenity, almost surreal ~ I found myself unwinding at a pace that was most perfect yet quicker than anywhere else i had landed so far - I had just been magically taken to Heaven ~ an Earthly one. The Old Fort has a a wonderful energy ~ Freeing..... yet Grounding...... The Air is Fresh, Breeze Gentle and the Views (really are) Breathtaking. Sitting by the stunning pool or many of the other comfortable areas in the grounds and absorbing the surroundings your in, ignite your senses, reminding you exactly why you looked for and booked such a place. The rooms (as are the buildings) are Elegant and refined yet FORTuitously Strong - Clean and very comfortable you have space to swing yet feel contained and cosy in your own personal area. A home from home where you can relax, feel safe, have dinner and make plans to enjoy the Island and everything is has to offer ~ I will most definitely be back, in hope of embracing all of the above.....and the repetitive light & happy feelings that made me fall in love, with every second i spent there . A Visit ~ Strongly recommended.
