The Costa Tropical region

The subtropical climate of the coast and its calm and warm waters make it an ideal place for all kinds of water sports. Diving enthusiasts can enjoy the most beautiful sea bottoms of the Andalusian coastline.
Motril is the second highest town in the province after Granada. Visitors will enjoy its sunny beaches, exquisite tropical products and the heritage of its long history, in the shape of churches, hermitages, civil buildings and the Museum of Sugar, devoted to the sugar cane, which was the main industry of the city for centuries.
The fish harbour is one of the most attractive places in town.Motril is a busy commercial port. There is also a fishing port and a yachting Marina. Nearby in a protected cove east of Punta de la Mona is the impressive Marina del Este yacht harbour. Water sports and scuba diving are popular here, thanks to the variety of sea life and clarity of the water.
The white village of Salobreña is worth a visit. Here you will be torn between visiting the moorish castle and the beach. The sugar cane plantations here confirm the name Costa Tropical.
A mere 45 minutes from Granada, and just over an hour to the Sierra Nevada. From October to April, you could be in the happy position of being able to ski during the day and return to sunbathe on the long, clean beaches of Motril in the evening.
Almuñecar Calendar Becoming increasingly popular among foreign residents. It is an attractive costal resort town that is particularly popular in the summer with Spanish holiday makers. The interesting seafront promenade is divided into many sections by the small coves and headlands that are typical of this part of the Costa Tropical. Among the numerous attractions of Almunecar is the Loro Sexi bird park which will delight adults and children alike. Some 1,500 birds of 120 different species are on display here, including doves, peacocks, parrots, cock-a-toos, macaws, swans, ducks, ostriches, etc.
Close by is the Parque del Majuelo, a pretty botanical garden containing Europe's largest collection of subtropical plants, with more than 400 species, the majority from Brazil and Cuba. In the park you will also find the ruins of the fish salting "factory" which was founded by the Phoenicians in 4th Century BC. similar to those found in archaeological excavations as well as providing visitors with a magnificent view of "El Majuelo" botanical park.
The Motril area
Motril is the largest town on the Costa Tropical with 50,000 inhabitants. Is it a commercial town that benefits from the tropical fruit and flower producers in the area.
The town of Motril is located just off the main coast road between Almeria and Malaga where the N325 turns inland for Granada. Most tourists by pass the town but is a good place to go shopping for necessities perhaps in one of the out of town hyper-markets.
This area has been a historic gateway for the most varied civilizations, from the Phoenicians who founded Sexi - now Almuñécar - and Salambina - now Salobreña - to Abd al-Rahman I, who established the Hummeyad Emirate of Al-Andalus.
