The Rhone / French Alps / Haute-Savoie region

The Portes du Soleil is an area of outstanding beauty, with traditional alpine villages nestling between soaring mountain peaks and wooded valleys.
In the winter it is a paradise for skiers and snowboarders with 12 interlinked ski resorts providing over 650km of pistes. We have been skiing and boarding the area enthusiastically for years and are still finding new runs. Snow conditions have been excellent in recent years with skiing possible from December through to early May.
With so many pistes and relatively little commercial development this is also the least crowded ski area we have ever found. There really is something for everyone with runs from scenic blues to breathtaking blacks, multiple snowparks, guided off piste exploration, heliskiing and hundreds of mountain chalets in which to enjoy a hot chocolate in front of a roaring fire or lunch on a sun-drenched terrace.
The mountains are no less active in the summer with hiking, golf, climbing, pony trekking, mountain biking, fishing, hot air ballooning, paragliding, paintballing, quad biking, gorge walking, white water rafting and canyoning being just some of the activities on offer.
One of our favourite summer locations is the gorgeous Lake Montriond, about 10 minutes drive from the apartment. It is a fantastic place for children with a shallow mini-lake for swimming, pony rides and easy walks around the main lake. You can picnic on the grassy banks or enjoy lunch at one of two lovely restaurants. In early August each year Montriond hosts a fantastic free party with a huge display of fireworks set to music. It is well worth taking a picnic and a good bottle of wine and making an afternoon/evening of it.
St. Jean d’Aulps is also a great base for easy trips to Thonon, Evian and the medieval walled village of Yvoire all on the banks of lake Geneva, and from which to visit the beautiful town and lake of Annecy or the famous resort of Chamonix.

The Morzine / La Grande Terche area
The Grande Terche where our apartment is located is the ski resort for the local village of St. Jean d’Aulps. It is a small friendly village in its own right with three restaurants, one pub, a grocery shop, a ski hire shop, a laundrette and a ski school with crèche all within minutes walk of the apartment.
A short drive (or walk in the summer) down the hill St. Jean D’Aulps offers all the local shops that you would expect (butcher, baker, delicatessen, patisserie, tabac, pharmacy, post office, laundrette etc.) as well as a good sized Champion supermarket, a pub and more restaurants. The pretty village has also has several attractive churches, a town hall and the ruins of a 12th Century Abbey.
In terms of ski access the Grande Terche gondola is minutes walk from the apartment. This takes you up to the Grande Terche/Roc d’Enfer ski area which is beautifully maintained and includes a fantastic 7km run taking you through forest and hamlets back to the foot of the gondola. For easy access to the rest of the vast Portes du Soleil area you can take the free ski bus that runs along the valley, or drive for approximately 15 minutes to the Ardent gondela just above Lake Montriond, from the top of which you can directly access the resorts of Avoriaz and Chatel, or head over into Switzerland.

St Jean D’Aulps is just over an hour’s scenic drive from Geneva Airport or approximately two hour’s drive from Lyon (full driving directions and tips will be supplied). Both airports are accessible from most UK regional airports, and excellent value flights are often available from the likes of Easyjet, Jet2, BMI Baby, Flybe and KLM, as well as British Airways and Swiss.
To make the most of the many facilities available in the wider Portes du Soleil area hiring a car is advisable. Most of the major car hire companies have desks at the airport arrival levels and cars can be pre booked for easy collection on arrival. (Excellent English is spoken at all the car hire companies). If you do not want to hire a car local taxis and buses are available from Geneva airport, or private transfers can be arranged.

Driving from Calais takes approximately 7 to 8 hours along mainly quiet motorways (tolls payable). If you want to break your journey some service stations on route have motels (usually no need to pre-book), or if you take a short deviation you can stay in one of the wonderful chateaux in the nearby countryside, which range from luxury hotels, to great value bed and breakfasts.

Before discovering the 'summer French Alps', my wife and I had always assumed it was just a winter holiday area, but how very wrong we were! The apartment itself was lovely, clean and modern, very well decorated throughout, and with all the furniture and bits and pieces you need to enjoy a comfortable stay. Clearly, the village is mainly geared up for the ski season, but then no-one is likely to buy skiwear in the heat of August so the odd closed ski shop was incidental. Local restaurants and bars were open though, and very friendly and enjoyable they were too. As a base for exploring the region, the apartment was perfect, with Lake Geneva only about 15 miles away, and other natural attractions also within easy reach. Lake Annecy is beautiful, and the cable car rides at Chamonix up to l'Aiguille du Midi and then across the glaciers to Helbronner are truly breathtaking and a 'once in a lifetime' experience. We also had a day out in Italy, driving through the Mont Blanc tunnel to Courmayeur to enjoy a real cappuccino or two. We would, without any reservation, wholeheartedly recommend the apartment as a base to experience the beauty the region has to offer. We had a fabulous holiday there - it really was one apart. |
