Pop into the local tourist office in the centre of town when you arrive. Find out about the huge range of non-boarding and skiing activities available to you all in Morzine. There’s everything from sledging, snow shoes (trekking on snow to find the best cheese fondue in a mountain chalet perhaps?!), taking a guided tour to the ice falls, or visiting the local ice rink. Morzine has a lovely artificial skating rink with a panoramic bar-restaurant, open from mid-December to end of April. There's plenty of snow in Morzine now!!
The original ski area is accessed from Morzine by the Pleney lift station - an effortless walk from our Studio Apartment. The ski area is a large, but relatively gentle area, with many easy Greens, Blues and Reds, plus a couple of Blacks on the Nyon side. Once you have explored the three major areas of Pleney, Nyon and Les Chavannes, you can try out the runs on the other side of Les Gets on Mont Chery.
Avoriaz and Les Gets are the nearest linked resorts with Avoriaz set high above Morzine, at 1800m. Equally accessible from our Studio Apartment , by walking down the hill to the Super Morzine gondola lift (which is equipped with new cabins), are the Avoriaz areas, comprising 70 km of ski runs, between 1000 and 2466 meters in altitude. When the snow has gone in other resorts it's still here!
This is paradise for those who like the more modern forms of snow sports. There are 2 snow parks and the new "Biotop" (the first 100% ecological winter forest park), a half pipe, a "canyon" slope and a new boarder slope. There are also 4 "snowcrosses", where you can practice off-piste pursuits in total safety. This sector is home to the Lindarets village, a hamlet of high mountain farms, which have been turned into restaurants, for the great pleasure of all good-food lovers. This is the gateway to Switzerland.
UP- UP - and AWAY! If you want to be up in the blue sky, you can take a helicopter ride, or go paragliding (there are stalls offering trips down by the tourist office in the centre of town), or perhaps get up above and away from it all in a hot air balloon.
ICE HOCKEY If you fancy men on skates who hit pucks, then you’d do no worse than to check out the local ice hockey team – The Penguins. The Morzine-Avoriaz Ice-hockey Club is one of the oldest in France. The club is now part of the Magnus League, the highest in French ice-hockey, after becoming champions of the French 1st division in 2004. They play League games throughout the season, and most shop windows have posters up advertising fixtures.
FITNESS PALACE If you want to improve your own fitness off the mountains, then Morzine has its own fitness centre with a weights room, climbing wall, a sauna and jacuzzi. It’s open all year and it won’t take you long to walk there from our apartment.
The Morzine area
Morzine itself is a picturesque old-style Savoyard town of chalets with their window boxes and an unspoilt town centre. Today's resort has kept the appearance of a village from another time: wooden facades, carved balconies and slate-covered roofs... and local slate at that!
The town offers a wide selection of independent and stylish shops and range of restaurants (over 30), as well as a good choice of non-skiing activities, including two cinemas. It has retained much of its character, charm and a strong French flavour. There is an old town, a market, the fishing in the river, an indoor sports hall and a superb outdoor swimming pool.
For post-slope action, (which can continue well into the night), we recommend Buddha Bar for chill out vibes, and The Cavern for some very cheeky partying, Opera and Paradis are Morzine’s two nightclubs that will always provide you with stories the following morning. Two great French bars are Le Crepu and Café Chaud.
**In The Summer/Autumn**
BOTH PERIODS ARE AT DISCOUNTED RATES
In MAY (when lifts are closed) you can enjoy Springtime among masses of wild flowers. It is also tranquil for Autumn Breaks in October when the leaves are in glorious colours.
Golf: This area boasts that its courses are the most spectacular in France, with top quality greens, giving opportunities for beginners and pros alike.
There's superb fishing with over 25 types, canoeing and white water rafting. And for the kids there's Electric Go-Karting, The Indiana Adventure Park and Quad bikes that the parents can enjoy too!
You can also go horse riding and between August and October through the nearby Bertolet Pass, millions of different birds create an aerial ballet, as they migrate from as far away as Norway to the Mediterranean and on to Africa. It is one of the world's wonders!
The covered Palais and Park des Sports has skating (Dec-May), table tennis, skate-boarding, tennis, fitness equipment, a climbing wall and sauna and jacuzzi.
