The Rhone/French Alps region

During the winter, the village offers 34 km of downhill ski slopes around the wonderful Roc d'Enfer with beautiful views of Lake Geneva, "The Dents du Midi" and the Mont-Blanc range.

Saint Jean d'Aulps village and resort, offers skiers the magnificent ski area named 'La Grande Terche' which has splendid scenery and panoramic views. The beautiful village is a convivial resort where you can also practice snowshoe trekking, paragliding and sledging. Saint Jean d'Aulps also benefits with a free ski bus link towards the other ski resorts of the Portes du Soleil. The Portes du Soleil region consists of 650km of pistes spread over two countries (France and Switzerland) accessed by 12 stations including Morzine, Les Gets and Avoriaz.

In the summer you will have the opportunity to go caving, climbing, quad biking, white water rafting, lake swimming, hot air ballooning, paintballing, paragliding as well as do via ferrata (climbing mountains with handrails, steps and footbridges).

There are 650 km of mountain bike trails across the Portes du Soleil, there are 14 stations connected in July-August by 24 ski lifts accessible to mountain bikers.

The area features 10 descent tracks, boarder cross, trial circuits, NEW for 2012, Pump Track (a field of bumps and bank turns)….. the mountain bikers paradise!

During summer there are over 200 km of sign-posted footpaths through the stunning surrounding countryside, which, if desired will take you all the way to the mountain tops. These paths explore the Vallee d'Aulps and offer you the ability to discover the different villages, lakes, mountains tops and rich alpine fauna and flora.

In both the winter and the summer, Le Grande Terche and St Jean d'Aulps offers a nice liveliness, and the events program is available each week at the Tourist Office.

Morzine

The apartment is situated in La Grande Terche, a sub region of Morzine. It is a 2 minute walk from the gondola 'La Grande Terche'. The immediate area has various ski hire shops, Sherpa supermarket, laundrette, ski school, pub, two restaurants and a take away.

Avalanche is a good restaurant serving a good selection of French food and steak. Auberge de la Terche offers superb traditional French food such as fondue and raclette plus an extensive pizza menu in a traditional rustic atmosphere. The food here is highly recommended. There is also a good take away place offering burgers and pizza.

St Jean d'Aulps is a couple of minutes down the road, it has some lovely French restaurants plus an excellent British run restaurant (Petite Coq) serving a wide variety of food. There is also a pub, tabac, post office, pharmacy, supermarket, gift shop, ski hire, patisserie and laundrette.

The Discovery Centre - An old monastic farm which was witness to 700 years of monastic life is now a museum which explains in an enjoyable way the everyday life of the monks and their functions in the community as well as the surprising story behind the abbey and the secret healing properties of medicinal plants used by the monks. The abbey still has its superb 13th century façade.

"Excellent stay in a great apartment"

Three of us stayed in the apartment and found it a great, and good base for our ski holiday. Well located in Le Grand Terche, just a few hundred yards from the ski lift in the village. Larger ski areas such as Les Getz, Morzine and Ardent (and more) are just a short 15mins drive.
Booking the apartment was easy - Elizabeth (owner) and Regis (agent in the village) were very helpful.
We really enjoyed our stay and will look to return in the future, and the apartment was excellent value for money.

"Nice place..."

We had a great trip to L'Ourson we lucked out with the weather and the skiing conditions where amazing. L'Ourson is a great base we where 4 lads St Jean itself is small with a nice pub and a really nice restaurant. Bills serve the best pizza I have ever had! The apartment is a 10 min drive from Ardent or Morzine where you have incredible access to the whole portes du soleil area. The apartment itself is small but incredibly well appointed, warm and comfortable. The views from the balcony are incredible. Thank you Liz we may well be in touch again next year. Matt, Gary, Dave and Ian.

"great holiday and conditions were perfect."

Just arived back from a week staying at your chalet. We had a lovely time and the amount of snow was perfect, it was very cold-20 but skiing was brill. The chalet was spot on I would say it would be very cramped for 6 but was a perfect size for 4 adults. We found the main room was quite chilly at nights due to temperatures and the seal around the balcony door let in a lot of cold air.The hot water was aproblem as well as after a hard day on the slopes only 2 of us could get a shower as there was never enough for all 3 of us, which again would be a problem if there was more or children staying. Also the lift wasnt working while we were there, so that was a bit of a pain, walking up 6 flights after a day on the slopes. However all in all the chalet was ideal for what we wanted, very clean and tidy, everything there that we needed, comfortable beds, good crochery etc and plenty of storage area for boots etc we would recommend it to family and friends without a doubt. Many Thanks mark and Margaret Lawson

"Great location"

We really enjoyed the skiing in St Jean d'Alps. The apartment had everything we needed and within 5 mins walk of the telecabine. The ski area was less crowded than major resort Morzine. Good ski equipment hire available at Muffat sports.

Personally I think it would be pretty cramped with 6. But for a couple or 4 people it would be great.

In the ski season it is easy to get to resorts of Morzine, Les Gets etc via the local bus service.

"A Great Base for Skiing the Porte du Soleil"

Clean, warm and comfortable, this apartment is just what you need for your ski base in this area. Situated on the slopes of St Jean-d'Aulps, access to the Roc d'Enfer ski area is an easy walk. You really need a car to access the rest of the extensive Porte du Soleil (although there is a bus service), but we found it straightforward to do so and had no problems with parking (free). The apartment is very well equipped and we even managed to cook and sit down to a full traditional Christmas lunch.

"This place was amazing!"

The apartment was very comfortable and clean. We had everything we needed - a balcony with fabulous views of the valley, a small kitchen with pots, pans, plates, two tv's, a big selection of DVD's, a Wii with many games, and lots of storage space. The area was full of outdoor activities - hiking, paragliding, chair lift rides, zip lines, luge runs, mountain biking, etc. The location was pretty central - an hour from Geneva, 2 hours from Montreaux, and 2 hours from the Mont Blanc tunnel. We had a great time!
