R18 - Barn Cottage
Cottage | 2 bedrooms | sleeps 5
2 miles from Pelynt, tucked down hedgerow lanes and a long private drive, two pretty, detached stone cottages on the side of a deep valley (panoramic views) full of wildlife and flowers, 3½ miles from Looe. Steep, grassy slope and steps to woods and river. Only birds and bees disturb the peace. Good river valley and woodland walks from the cottages. Family donkeys and dogs are extremely friendly and happy to accompany you over owners' 54 acres (sheep, lambs in spring) which encompass St Nun's holy well; its waters are reputed to cure insanity and all visitors are supposed to leave a gift of a 'pin', in this context a pin of ale for the farmer! You are welcome to collect eggs (when available) and groom the donkeys. Spring water. A wonderfully tranquil escape, free from traffic noise and light pollution (star-gazing). Good walk to pub at Duloe. Barn Cottage: easy access ramp up to patio and pretty shrub-filled lawned garden (furniture, gas barbecue) with superb valley views. Entrance hall; beamed living room (open fire - logs and coal included) with handsome dresser, TV/DVD, glazed door to garden; fitted kitchen/dining room (dishwasher, washing machine, microwave, fridge-freezer); downstairs loo (washbasin). Stairs up to two bedrooms with lovely valley views – a double with 2'6" single, and a twin. Bathroom (suite plus bath-shower).

The West Country region
South Cornwall: between the river Tamar and river Fowey and south of Bodmin Moor is inland Cornwall at its most gentle and lovely: deep, wooded valleys (including on Bodmin Moor's southern edge) between sheep and cattle-grazed fields; tidal creeks (exceptionally pretty Lerryn is on one of them). Most of it is delightfully by-passed by main roads.
On the coast are long sandy beaches (Whitsand Bay), high headlands and sandy coves at the foot of cliffs (Lantic Bay) to walk to, two of Cornwall's loveliest cove villages (Kingsand, Cawsand) and a classic fishing village (Polperro). From Looe - river-mouth fishing village/resort with sandy beach - you can fish and sail. Round here Daphne du Maurier lived and wrote. A branch line railway chugs pleasantly from Liskeard to Looe. Don't miss the Musical Instrument Museum near St Keyne. Just to the west is Cornwall's star modern attraction, The Eden Project, worth a once-a-year visit into the future indefinite, and Lanhydrock, a very lovely National Trust house and garden. Beyond them begins the extraordinary and spectacular china clay country, good for a visit (excellent museum). You should go to Cotehele beside the Tamar, too, and Calstock for the 'messing about in boats' activity.
Pelynt: village (pub, several shops) 3 miles from Polperro (pretty fishing village) and Looe. 'And shall Trelawney die, here's twenty thousand Cornishmen will know the reason why'. This is where he was born and - some 300 years ago - did die.
