About this location
The Devon region
Devon - affectionately known as 'cream tea country' is a county of green leafy lanes and thatched cottages and has retained all of its olde world charm. The locals are friendly and there is an abundance of clean beaches and excellent surf for surfing.
It boasts two National Parks - Dartmoor in the south and Exmoor in the North and also the U.K.'s only Biosphere at Braunton Burrows - it is home to a number of rare and characteristic habitats and species.
Woolacombe Bay and Mortehoe are situated in a designated area of outstanding natural beauty. The shoreline has clean water and a Blue Flag beach with an abundance of shore life. The beach is a well-known surfing beach and it is possible to hire the suits and boards from the beach and also have expert tuition from a local champion surfer (Nick Thorne). A walk through two fields and down some steps will bring you to Rockham Beach. Here at low tide you can explore the rockpools and see the remains of the S.S. Collier which went down here in 1914. Its anchor can be seen outside the Ship Aground pub in the centre of the village. Mortehoe itself is mentioned in the Domesday Book and the church of St Mary dates back to 1258.
Mortehoe, just inland from the dangerous rocks of Morte Point is less than a mile from Woolacombe. The lane up from Woolacombe to its cliff top position is steep and narrow but if you don't feel like walking there is a car park in the village. Next to the car park is the heritage centre which is housed in a converted National Trust barn. It has information on the history of the Mortehoe, the local marine life and displays about the many shipwrecks off Mortepoint. It is open from Easter until the end of October. Within its grounds there is also a small children's play area.

"Comfortable accommodation, ideal for Mortehoe / Woolacombe."
We had a great stay at Capra cottage which is ideally located for the local area. We stayed a family with a 5 month old baby, and grandparents. The rooms are spacious and easily accommodated a cot. Facilities were great for self catering and the village pub(s) are a short walk if you don't want to cook. Highly recommended and excellent value.

We have stayed at Capra cottage numerous times, over several years and always receive a warm welcome from Anne & David, alongside home-made scones with jam & cream!
The cottage is always clean, well equipped, with a view over the hills.
When offered a choice of holidays, my 16 year olds on chose Capra cottage and Woolacombe, as his favourite!! And we all know teenagers are never wrong!

"A Real Home From Home"
We had a lovely week at Capra Cottage. On arrival we were met by the owners David and Anne.Freshly made scones with jam and cream were provided by Anne! What a lovely start to a holiday! The accomodation is very well equiped and was spotlessly clean.Nothing is too much trouble for the owners, should you need help with anything.
We would certainly recommend this cottage for a comfortable stay in Mortehoe.
