The Normandy / Manche region

Our area of Normandy reminds us of the most attractive bits of our native Shropshire but with more space and far less traffic. It is a gently rolling, green area of farmland and country lanes. Normandy is famed for its butter and cheese and the cows which facilitate this. The Norman "Bocage", mounded tree-crowned earth lining the lanes or dividing fields, is also famous and was a big factor in the Allied invasion of 1944. The region abounds with the history of WW2.
Roads with very little traffic allow easy access in under 20 minutes: zoos and theme parks, 2nd world war sites, lakes, fishing and golf. Local towns and villages proud of their bakeries and special street markets. Within 1 hour: Mont St Michel, St Malo old town, Caen, the coast with wonderful sandy beaches, ferry day trips to Channel Isles.
The Mortain / Le Mesnil Gilbert area
There are wonderful restaurants over the whole of the area. From very posh at just over 30€ per person for a sumptuous 3-course meal to many modest places serving great food where you can have lunch of 4-courses - often including wine and/or cider for about11€!
Mont St Michel is the most famous attraction and is the second most visited site in France. Out of this world.
The Tapestry at Bayeau is a must. The Botanical Gardens in Avranches. The old town of St Malo. Villedieu Les Poeles (God's Town of the Frying Pans!) where copper and brass are produced and church bells exported.
The waterfalls at Mortain.
The Zoo at Champrepus and the Enchanted Village near Mortain are always hits with the children. Every town has its own market - the most "French" is St Hilare on Wednesdays.

A wonderful week spent here in July. Fabulous accommodation - spotlessly clean and well furnished. The hosts are great. Welcoming and brimming with local knowledge. Always there when you need them but also completely unobtrusive. A great cottage for a family of 5 (Children aged 10,9 and 7). Peaceful setting - need transport to get about. Great location for all the major sites - Bayeaux, Normandy beaches, St Malo, Mont st Michel as well as some great local sites like waterfalls and enchanted villages. The heated outdoor pool was a real bonus. Great after a day out and a lovely spot for a quiet day at the cottage. Well maintained and incredibly safe with locked gates and an alarm to prevent accidents. Can't recommend this cottage enough. It was a really great family holiday in Normandy. You won't be disappointed! Response: Andy, You are very kind to take the trouble to write such an enthusiastic and positive review. We are deighted that you and your family were so happy and found the whole experience of La Hallotiere and the area so worthwhile and we look forward to seeing you again. |

OLNEY ..... in fact its hard to imagine what Peter & Jenny could do to make it better apart from giving it to us...
SHROPSHIRE We would highly recommend La Hallotiere to all, young or old, as the perfect base for holidays in this part of France.
DORSET We arrived at La Hallotiere and thought we had gone to heaven it was beautiful. The views were stunning (and coming from Dorset we're used to our views) the grounds were ideal to relax in, plenty of room for football, cricket etc. and the pool was very well maintained and provided hours of enjoyment. The gites are spaced perfectly to give each occupant maximum privacy.
NOTTINGHAM We have been renting houses all over France for many years and consider ourselves to be very exacting customers, but we genuinely found the owners, Peter and Jenny, to be without doubt the most helpful and accommodating 'hosts' we had ever come across. The house was spotless and incredibly well equipped, and provided the perfect base for exploring this relatively unknown and very lovely.part of rural France. We have recommended La Hallotiere to many people, and would not hesitate to return.
