The Northern England / Northumberland region
Northumbria is a heady combination of fishing villages, market towns, sandy beaches, magnificent castles and historic Hadrian’s Wall, tied together by beautiful countryside and abundant wildlife. Covering 400 square miles, the Northumberland National Park is the least populated of England’s National Parks, much to the benefit of those visitors seeking peace and solitude.
Thousands of paths and tracks weave their way through beautiful countryside, providing exhilarating fresh air and wide-open spaces for walkers and cyclists alike. Stay a while, roam the countryside but don’t forget to explore further, because the area known as Northumbria offers much more than just the National Park. Northumbria encompasses County Durham, the Tees Valley and Tyne and Wear, as well as covering the North Pennines ‘Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’, the World Heritage Site of Hadrian’s Wall, the City of Durham and the Heritage Coastline, boasting a selection of protected golden beaches and tiny fishing villages. Northumberland’s Heritage Coast has mile upon mile of sparkling beaches, rocky coves and picturesque fishing villages.
Sweeping from Berwick-upon-Tweed in the north, to Druridge Bay in the south, popular destinations along the coastline include the horseshoe-shaped sandy beach and dunes at Beadnell Bay, the bustling village of Seahouses, with boat trips from the picturesque harbour, and the kipper smokery and coastal path at Craster.
Adding to the area’s splendour is a chain of magnificent castles: Alnwick, home to the powerful Percy family and the setting for some of the Harry Potter films; spectacular, medieval Bamburgh, standing high on its rocky outcrop; the brooding ruins of Dunstanburgh and pretty Warkworth.
The Morpeth / Amble area
Situated at the mouth of the River Coquet, the bustling little seaport of Amble is an ideal place for exploring Northumberland. Amble offers a new marina, a harbour, sandy beaches and coastal walks though what was historically a centre for boatbuilding. Landing a variety of fish, prawns, crabs and lobsters, the large fishing boats which moor along the harbour wall stock the local harbour fish shop meaning that visitors can enjoy a variety of freshly caught seafood. With the bird sanctuary at Hauxley and the country park at Druridge Bay, this is an excellent spot for bird watchers and nature lovers. Coquet Island - an RSPB reserve with a large population of terns, puffins and eider ducks – is also very close by and boat trips can be arranged.

The cottage was very nice and well equipped and the owners were very helpful. It was an excellent location for touring the area, we visited Alnwick Castle and Gardens, Seahouses, Bamburgh and Beamish to name a few. We had a wonderful week and would fully recommend the cottage and area.

,Staying in a lovely house in a small town by the sea with easy access to the Northumberland coast. I had forgotten how beautiful it is with it's rolling countryside, expansive sandy beaches and dramatic castles. We will be back!
