The Northern England / Northumberland region
Northumbria is a heady combination of fishing villages, market towns, sandy beaches, magnificent castles and historic Hadrian’s Wall, tied together by beautiful countryside and abundant wildlife. Covering 400 square miles, the Northumberland National Park is the least populated of England’s National Parks, much to the benefit of those visitors seeking peace and solitude. Thousands of paths and tracks weave their way through beautiful countryside, providing exhilarating fresh air and wide-open spaces for walkers and cyclists alike. Stay a while, roam the countryside but don’t forget to explore further, because the area known as Northumbria offers much more than just the National Park. Northumbria encompasses County Durham, the Tees Valley and Tyne and Wear, as well as covering the North Pennines ‘Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’, the World Heritage Site of Hadrian’s Wall, the City of Durham and the Heritage Coastline, boasting a selection of protected golden beaches and tiny fishing villages. Northumberland’s Heritage Coast has mile upon mile of sparkling beaches, rocky coves and picturesque fishing villages. Sweeping from Berwick-upon-Tweed in the north, to Druridge Bay in the south, popular destinations along the coastline include the horseshoe-shaped sandy beach and dunes at Beadnell Bay, the bustling village of Seahouses, with boat trips from the picturesque harbour, and the kipper smokery and coastal path at Craster. Adding to the area’s splendour is a chain of magnificent castles: Alnwick, home to the powerful Percy family and the setting for some of the Harry Potter films; spectacular, medieval Bamburgh, standing high on its rocky outcrop; the brooding ruins of Dunstanburgh and pretty Warkworth.
The Morpeth / Amble area
Amble-by-the-Sea is a vibrant little seaport that was once known for its boat building and now boasts a new marina. It offers many attractions and activities for its visitors, who can sample the delights of the freshly caught fish and seafood from the fish shop in the harbour. A walk to the nearby bird sanctuary at Hauxley is a treat for bird watchers and the RSPB reserve on the nearby Coquet Island is a haven for terns, puffins and eider ducks. There are superb beaches to hand and coastal villages to discover such as Craster and Alnmouth. With castles and grand houses in abundance it is packed with exciting days out for the entire family. Alnwick Castle with it’s stunning gardens and connections to ‘Hogwarts” are a good place to begin, and children will recognise the location from the Harry Potter films and books. With lots to do and see, Amble makes a perfect base to explore this diverse and interesting county.
