The Northern England / Northumberland region
Northumbria is a heady combination of fishing villages, market towns, sandy beaches, magnificent castles and historic Hadrian’s Wall, tied together by beautiful countryside and abundant wildlife. Covering 400 square miles, the Northumberland National Park is the least populated of England’s National Parks, much to the benefit of those visitors seeking peace and solitude. Thousands of paths and tracks weave their way through beautiful countryside, providing exhilarating fresh air and wide-open spaces for walkers and cyclists alike. Stay a while, roam the countryside but don’t forget to explore further, because the area known as Northumbria offers much more than just the National Park. Northumbria encompasses County Durham, the Tees Valley and Tyne and Wear, as well as covering the North Pennines ‘Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’, the World Heritage Site of Hadrian’s Wall, the City of Durham and the Heritage Coastline, boasting a selection of protected golden beaches and tiny fishing villages. Northumberland’s Heritage Coast has mile upon mile of sparkling beaches, rocky coves and picturesque fishing villages. Sweeping from Berwick-upon-Tweed in the north, to Druridge Bay in the south, popular destinations along the coastline include the horseshoe-shaped sandy beach and dunes at Beadnell Bay, the bustling village of Seahouses, with boat trips from the picturesque harbour, and the kipper smokery and coastal path at Craster. Adding to the area’s splendour is a chain of magnificent castles: Alnwick, home to the powerful Percy family and the setting for some of the Harry Potter films; spectacular, medieval Bamburgh, standing high on its rocky outcrop; the brooding ruins of Dunstanburgh and pretty Warkworth.
The Morpeth / Longframlington area
Set in the heart of Northumberland between the Cheviots and the coast, the village of Longframlington provides access to a range of walking opportunities throughout this picturesque region. Brinkburn Priory is a short drive away and offers visitors a chance to see the restored Augustinian Priory beside the River Coquet. Just 10 minutes drive to the west is the National Trust's Cragside House and Gardens, whilst 15 minutes in the opposite direction will lead to the Heritage Coast and miles of clean, sandy beaches. The historic town of Alnwick, with its impressive Castle and Garden, is only six miles to the north whilst the spectacular National Park is also within easy reach.
