Moretonhampstead offers everything you could wish for from a small Devon town, a fantastic award winning Deli selling local meat and fish who will make up dishes to order so no cooking required! The town has several cafes selling the best of local meals and scones etc as well as a small supermarket, pubs and shops selling local pottery and antiques..
We can help organise guided walks, experiences at Bovey Castle, shooting, horse riding, canoeing , fishing and a host of other treats and outdoor activities.
There is a local tourist office in Moretonhampsted which provides maps of the local walks of which there are many Dartmoor walks straight from the front door and all over the moor.
There is a local swimming pool which is open during the summer months and is heated. Moretonhampstead has a leisure facility and two playgrounds.
There is a welcome pack in the cottage packed with all the best bits of Devon and we are very happy to help with ideas to make the most of your holiday.
The cottage does not have a private garden but at the rear of the house there is a small South Facing area of common land which has life sized local stone sculptures of Dartmoor animals, even two horses. There is a bench next to the cottage for a drink in the sun.
There is a local car park 1 mins walk away. It is free most of the year and during the summer months we can provide a permit which you display in your car.

Tilley’s Cottage is the perfect base for family holidays or friends to get together. Moretonhampstead is an ancient market town situated on the edge of Dartmoor in Devon. It sits in the shelter of hills on three sides and the beautiful Wray Valley on the fourth. Dartmoor is on the door step and no matter which road you take you cannot fail to be impressed by the breathtaking views. The town is about 15 miles from the cathedral city of Exeter and 40 min from the beaches. The town offers visitors’ opportunities for hiking, cycling, and pony trekking, fishing and just relaxing. There are a variety of cafes, pubs, local shops, tea shops and a wonderful Deli. There is also a heated outdoor public swimming pool open during the summer. There are many NT properties close by, one of them being Castle Drogo, only 7 miles & the miniature pony centre for children is only 5 min away. Bovey Castle and Guidleigh Park are very near for a special treat.

I am glad you found many aspects of your holiday to your liking but I wanted to comment on your experiences of Moretonhampstead which were not so favourable. I bought the cottage in 2007 because of its location and since that date it would appear our guests have grown to love the town and friendly locals by the endless comments in the visitors book. As you say you were incredibly unlucky as Moreton, despite being a small town, is generally quiet and restful, words used to describe the stay of the last two guests. Having the supermarket overhauled on your week did mean that it was chaotic and busy which would have changed the atmosphere while this essential work was carried out. However it is done and we are all enjoying a much improved shopping experience and Moreton is back to its usual pace. I hope you one day return and give Moreton another try as all our other guests have left enjoying its people, history, accommodation and restaurants. I do hope you managed to catch up on your TV viewing! Best wishes Nikki

"An idyllic haven set in the most wonderful surroundings"
As avid walkers, we wanted to find a base to explore Dartmoor. We stumbled across Tilley's Cottage, of which now we are so grateful! Set in the most hospitable village of Moretonhampstead, with its friendly pubs, quality of food and general amenities, it offers top class accommodation, and really does feel like a 'home from home'. The owners are keen to ensure that your stay is a pleasant one and have gone to great lengths to document local features, restaurants, places of interest, etc. - but also, are only a phone call away should you need them. We have enjoyed Tilley's Cottage so much that we have recently booked our third stay!

"Beautiful, cosy and well kitted out cottage in the heart of Dartmoor"
My family and I (5 adults plus 2 little dachschunds) thoroughly enjoyed a week's stay in this beautiful cottage set in charming Moretonhampstead.
It really did feel like a home from home. The kitchen had all the mod cons, the house comfortably accommodated 5 of us and we loved the log fire in the evenings.
The location was also a huge positive with a fantastic butchers just next door and the post office and co-op across the road plus plenty of lovely little pubs and a yummy tea room serving the best scones ever!
The parking situation was fine as we found residential parking just up the road but there is also a car park which charges a couple of quid for the day if it's busy in peak season.
We found Tilley's cottage was a perfect base to go and explore beautiful Dartmoor with it's tors, cute villages and pubs as well as being within easy reach of Exeter and Tavistock if the weather isn't so great.
We really enjoyed our break at Tilley's and will certainly intend on going back there if we ever venture across to Devon again.
Please feel free to get in touch if you have any questions about the property etc.
