The Central England / Cotswolds / Cheltenham / Gloucester region
The countryside of England and Wales has a rich diversity of scenery, of great value to the nation. In 1949, the Government decided to protect these areas by giving them special status. The wilder, more dramatic landscapes became National Parks; the softer and more intensively farmed were made Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONBs)
The Cotswolds became an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in 1966. Being an AONB means that the Cotswolds are protected as a very special landscape - a living working landscape - of national importance for everyone to enjoy. It is one of 40 AONBs in England and Wales and the largest, covering 790 sq miles (2,038 sq kms) and 78 miles (126 kms) from north to south.
There are many beautiful villages in the Cotswold to visit such as Broadway, Burford, Burton-on-the-Water, Chipping Campden, Stow-on-the-Wold & Upper/Lower Slaughter to name but a few. In addition there are a wide variety of attractions including many delightful gardens, historic properties/castles and places for children and adults of all ages.
