Home description

This cottage is set in the beautiful Goricko National Park in North East Slovenia. It is situated in the small wine growing village of Suhi Vhr, and set within it's own vineyard. The vines produce Chardonnay and Reisling wines which are available for guests to sample. Within 4km is the Terme 3000 Thermal Spa, which features 23 indoor and outdoor naturally heated pools, including children's pools and water slides, playground and restaurant. Within 30 minutes drive are 4 other thermal spas which offer a variety of days out for the family and are greatly enjoyed by children, as well as offering a wide variety of relaxing 'treatments' for the adults.
The cottage makes an excellent base for exploring this undiscovered corner of Slovenia, and also for trips into Austria, Hungary and Croatia, all of which have borders within 20 minutes drive. Budapest, Vienna and Zagreb are all within 3 hours drive. There is excellent walking, cycling (2 adult bikes are provided free of charge and further bikes can be hired cheaply locally at Moravske Toplice) and lots of excellent and very reasonable restaurants, including local Vinotoc (winery, local food) within 5 minutes walk.

The Prekmurje region

Vino Cottage is situated in the heart of the Goricko nature park in the small village of Suhi Vhr, north east Slovenia.The surrounding area consists of rolling hills, apple farms, vine yards and beautiful traditional Prekmurje farm houses.

Prekmurje is still a relatively undiscovered corner of Slovenia, surrounded on 3 sides by Austria to the north, Hungary to the east and Croatia to the south. Summers are generally hot - spring and autumn weather is usually good but there can be an evening chill - the wood stove will help keep the cottage cosy. Winters can be extremely cold with heavy snow.

The beautiful town of Ptuj is only an hours drive away, and can be reached via the hilltop wine village of Jeruzalem. Day trips into Austria, Hungary and Croatia are a short drive from the cottage. The ski slopes of Maribor are only an hour by car, and in the summer cable car rides into the mountain offer excellent walking and cycling opportunities.


Moravske Toplice / Suhi Vhr area

The area is famous for its thermal spas, and the largest of these, Terme 3000 (www.terme3000.si) is only 4kms from the cottage; there are 23 different indoor and outdoor pools and the spa is an excellent day out for children and adults alike. There is also an 18 hole golf course at the spa. There are 4 other spas within an easy 20-30minute drive, all of which offer variations in terms of facilities and treatments.

In the nearby village of Selo you will find the famous chapel of St Nicholas called the ‘Rotunda’, a superb Romanesque rotunda built in the mid-13th century. Also located in Selo is one of the regions best restaurants named ‘K Rotundi’. Here you will be able to sample a wide choice of Prekmurje specialities such as game, fish, and goat and of course the famous ‘bograc’ (the Slovenian version of goulash). There are many other excellent and very reasonable restaurants in close proximity.

The vines of the property are looked after by a respected local winemaker, who runs a Vinotoc nearby where wines can be purchased, and also local food is available and winetastings can be arranged.

The nearby town of Murska Sobota offers a wide variety of shops and a local market, and a large Interspa supermarket has an excellent range of food.

Ryanair fly daily from London Stansted to Graz airport (approx 1 1/4 hours from property), and also have regular flights to Maribor in Slovenia, again approx 1 - 1 1/2 hours from the property. Ryanair also fly to Balaton in Hungary which is approximately 1 1/2 hours from the property.
Easyjet fly to Ljubljana (approximately 2 1/2hours from property), again from London Stansted.
The Slovenian national airline Adria have scheduled flights daily from Manchester and London Gatwick to Ljubljana.

Cars can easily be hired at the airport, or we can arrange for a minibus to collect you from the airport to transfer to the cottage, then arranging car hire locally in Slovenia.

The front door opens onto a large open plan living room and kitchen, with comfortable sofa, chairs, dining table, TV/DVD. Satellite connection allows access to a range of 'freeview' channels in english and other languages (including Channel 4 and Channel 5). The centre piece of this room is the woodburning stove (wood provided) which can be used to take off the morning or evening chill in the spring or autumn. The kitchen is fully equipped for self-catering, including crockery etc for young children. There is also a food blender for those with babies who wish to puree baby food. Off the living area lie the bathroom (shower, WC, basin) and the 3rd bedroom - this contains a large sofa bed, so can be used as either a second living room or as a bedroom.

Upstairs are 2 further bedrooms. The second is accessed through the first bedroom, which is standard for wine cottages in this area. The main bedrrom contains double bed, cot and single bed, whilst the second room contains twin beds. A stairgate and nightlights are provided for those with young children.

In the large basement, there is a well equipped games room, containing table tennis, table football, darts, and a variety of games and outdoor play equipment.

Further details outdoors:
The house opens onto a south facing sun terrace, sheltered by the overhang of the roof. This has a large outdoor table and chairs, plus a large barbecue. This terrace leads onto a large enclosed lawned area, separated from the surrounding vineyard by a fence designed to be toddler proof. There are swings and a slide in the garden. At the front of the property is a large area for parking, with a gate closing off the property from the quiet local road.

The cottage also provides a wide selection of toys, books and DVD / Videos for young children. The third bedroom has a Playstation (PS1) with a variety of games.
