The Costa Blanca / Valencia / Alicante Province region
CLIMATE: The region boasts one of the best climates in Europe, having an average of around 300 days of sunshine per year. Average daily temperatures range from a low of 15C in January to a high of 31C in August. December, January & February are cooler and the resorts uncrowded. Perfect for walking & golfing holidays, and also for exploring historical sites & places of interest. March-April & Oct-Nov are usually pleasantly warm & sunny, and May - September is almost guaranteed sunshine & high temperatures.
HISTORY: The Costa Blanca (the white coast) stretches from Valencia in the north to just beyond Torrevieja in the south, and some 200kms of coastline. It was christened 2500 years ago by Greek traders who founded the colony of Akra Leuka, which is now modern day Alicante. As well as the Greeks, the region has been conquered by many other visitors including the Celts, Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans, and Moors which have all influenced the culture of the region.
PLACES OF INTEREST: VALENCIA (about 1 hour's drive north) is Spain's third largest city, which has a magnificent fruit & vegetable market, and meat market. Shopping facilities are numerous, including an El Cortes Ingles (equivalent to our House of Fraser) and many other major stores. The city is thought to be more than 2000 years old as, according to Roman historians, it was founded in 138 BC. In 413 AD, it was conquered by the Visigoths and, three centuries later, flourished as a Moorish capital until the Spanish hero El Cid reclaimed the city in the 11th century. Sights of the city include the Cathedral (completed over a period of three centuries with examples of varying styles as a result), the statue of Verge dels Desampartas, the gothic La Lonja Silk Exchange, the Ceramic Museum, and the Jardines del Real Art Gallery.
GUADALEST is a mountain village some 25kms inland from Benidorm. It is the second most photographed place in Spain, and is built on top of a hill with sheer drops on all sides. Its location was chosen by the Moors to defend themselves from invasion. It is entered by going through an opening in the cliff face. This entrance used to be blocked up in times of threat, which made the town almost inpenetrable. The views from here are stunning, as it is surrounded by beautiful mountain ranges. On the route back from here you will pass through CALLOSA, where you can visit the FONTS D'ALGAR. These are cascading waterfalls and fresh water pools that you can swim in. LA NUCIA & POLOP are located just to the south of Callosa, and are examples of traditional, unspoilt Spanish villages.
ALTEA is a coastal town that still has its own fishing fleet. The town dates back to 1562. On top of the hill in the old town is the church of Our Lady of Condolence. It is well worth the climb up to it, as you will pass through the old town which is very quaint and has many good restaurants, bars & unusual shops. Outside the church, there are some very good vantage points, which afford views from Calpe to Benidorm.
THE JALON VALLEY is around 30 mins drive inland - famed for its wine production, almond blossom in January, fabulous scenery, and unspoilt villages. There is an abundant choice of traditional Spanish restaurants, and from the vantage point on the COLL DE RATES (on the pretty, scenic road to Callosa), it is possible to see the whole of the Jalon Valley and, on a very clear day, you can see the island of Ibiza.
BENIDORM (about 45 mins drive south) is the major tourist resort on the Costa Blanca. It is very commercial, has lots of shops, superb beaches (amongst the best in Europe), and unrivalled nightlife. TERRA MITICA THEME PARK, TERRA NATURA WILDLIFE PARK, AQUALANDIA WATER PARK & MUNDOMAR (dolphin & sea lion shows) are all located here.
VERGEL SAFARI PARK (between El Verger & Pego) is a drive-through park with literally hundreds of free animals.
Moraira / Cumbre del Sol area
CUMBRE DEL SOL literally translated means "peak of the mountain of sun". Situated on the most easterly point of the Iberian peninsula in an area of extraordinary beauty untouched by mass tourism, Cumbre del Sol is a well established and exclusive residential area consisting of private villas and houses with wonderful panoramic views, green spaces (it borders onto La Grenadella National Park), and surrounded by the intense blue of the Mediterranean on three sides. PUEBLO PANORAMA is a group of penthouse-style apartments located at the very highest point of Cumbre del Sol - built into the hillside in clusters of 6 on three staggered levels.
FACILITIES ON CUMBRE DEL SOL (5 mins drive): A la Carte Restaurant with its own full-size swimming pool, banks, pharmacy, large supermarket, international telephone service, horse riding centre (with own bar), cliff/countryside walks.
SECLUDED BEACH (8 mins drive): Playa del Morach - a superb, picturesque cove used almost exclusively by the residents of Cumbre del Sol, and has a car park, beach bar, toilet facilities, and sunbeds/parasols for hire.
MORAIRA (10 mins drive): Formerly a small fishing village (some of the old parts still remain) which has developed in to a charming, up-market little town retaining a village atmosphere. Small, colourful streets, pavement cafes, a pretty marina, and a wide expanse of sandy beach in a sweeping crescent. Excellent selection of bars and restaurants, a lively shopping area, and a market on Fridays. Just 1.5kms from Moraira lies the picturesque bay of EL PORTET with a beach of fine sand. Surrounded by steep hills dotted with villas, it's a real artist's paradise. From El Portet you can watch the sun set behind the Penon de Ifach - a large column of rock which rises from the sea.
MOORS & CHRISTIANS FESTIVAL is held in Moraira - usually in June. This festival is also held in other nearby towns at different times over the summer, and is quite spectacular with realistic staged fights between the opposing sides, and culminating in an extravagant parade.
BENITACHELL & TEULADA (10 & 15 mins drive): If you want to get the feel of a typical small Spanish town, take a walk around both these places. The narrow streets are full of pretty houses opening directly onto the road, and the colourful market in Teulada is well worth a visit.
JAVEA (20 mins drive) is our nearest large town which has preserved all its charm, and is a fascinating mix of old and new. Large, sandy beaches, and an unspoilt old town - home to many local residents, and the backdrop for many colourful festivals, plus an abundance of shops and restaurants.
GATA DE GORGOS is located about 8kms inland from Javea, and is a small town well known for the production of cane goods. The town has many shops which sell cane ware and souvenirs, and also has a guitar factory where you can watch Spanish guitars actually being made.
CALPE (30 mins drive): This is where the Rock of Ifach is located. There is a footpath up to the top of the rock, which is also a bird & wildlife sanctuary. Also in the town are the Las Salinas salt lakes, where flocks of pink flamingos regularly congregate. Calpe has sandy beaches and a charming fishing port that is renowned for its fresh fish restaurants.
DENIA (30 mins drive): Take the scenic route via the mountain roads of the Montgo National Park. Long sandy beaches, a castle proudly surveying the town & port, many harbour-front restaurants, and shady tree-lined avenues full of shops & pavement cafes. An interesting "old quarter" is to be found in the castle area.
Apart from the above, there are many SECLUDED BEACHES, WALKS, & SCENIC VIEWPOINTS to enjoy close by.
EATING OUT: Apart from the huge choice of restaurants in local towns & villages, there are many rural restaurants to try - some situated very close to Cumbre del Sol. They offer set menus (including wine) at ridiculously low prices. The national dish "paella" originated in this area, and wines of the region are excellent and inexpensive.

Further details outdoors: THE TERRACE has views "to die for" (according to us and our previous guests) over the sea & surrounding countryside. We were "blown away by the view" is another comment we have received. It is difficult to tear yourself away from our terrace when all you need is right there (drinks, sun, view, music & total comfort). After 4 years of ownership, we still "waste" so much time just sitting on the terrace and looking....at the sea, the countryside, the villas below, and ships that pass in the night. At night, the view changes to floodlit pools, the distant lights of local fishermen out at sea (plus the odd passing cruise ship), the path of the moon across the sea, & a twinkling lighthouse on a distant point. Magical! Perfect for pre-dinner drinks, or al-fresco dining under the stars!
Our adjacent SHARED POOLS (20m from the apartment) have the same glorious views, and also have the sun all day until approx. 7pm. The pools are never crowded as access is restricted to residents/guests, so there is always plenty of space for swimming/sun-bathing. The "infinity" pools are a work of art in themselves. One pool has a baby area.
PARKING BAY is situated on the access road above adjacent to the steps down to the apartment.
