The Costa Blanca / Valencia / Alicante Province region
Rugged and Stunning
La Marina Alta features some of the most stunning terrain in the Costa Blanca due to the rugged nature that the mountains in the area meet the Mediterranean sea. This coming together of land and water result in some beautiful, and in some areas secluded, beaches with soft white sand and clear blue water.
Main Urban Centres
The larger cities in the Marina Alta consist of Denia (pop ~32000), Calpe (pop ~24000), Javea (pop ~20000) and Altea (pop ~17000), some of which, though historically fishing villages, rely largely on tourism as their main industry; and for good reason!
Moraira / Benitachell/Cumbre del Sol area
Cumbre del Sol is located in the heart of the Costa Blanca in the municipality of Benitachell, between Javea and Moraira, set in the north of the province of Alicante This residential site extends along the sea front, over a surface of 3.700.000 m², and it is divided into different residential areas with villas, detached houses, bungalows and apartments, always surrounded by green spaces, right next to Mediterranean Sea. Beaches and coves, green areas and parks, sports and leisure activities, first-class infrastructures, shopping centres, banks, a chemist shop, a health centre, all at your service. Enjoy a couple of days, a holiday, a longer period, all year round; whichever you choose, you always dispose of all the services and more in Cumbre del Sol. Several viewpoints, impressive views, surrounded by specially protected areas, such as the natural park of Granadilla (Javea), the puig de Llorença mountain or the Portet de Moraira beach. Hiking on the cliffs discovering how the inhabitants of Benitachell used to fish whilst hanging from the cliffs; its caves; practice water ports; diving; or simply enjoy the good climate of its famous Morach beach. If you want more intimacy, you can enjoy the Los Tiestos cove. All this and much more. This northermost comarca of the province of Alicante features a more rigged coastline than the regions to the south, resulting in some spectacular views and smaller, blue flagged high quality beaches.
Nestled between Denia, Calpe and Altea, Moraira is a tranquil town on the Costa Blanca with an important active tourist community, both those living there all year round as well as those who either just visiting it once or coming back every summer holiday.
This old fishing town with the Mediterranean Sea stretched out at its feet and a beautiful mountain range covering its back maintains an average temperature of about 18 degrees. Thanks to its tourism, this town has known how to mix all the necessary and modern services into its typical fishing port ambience. Proof of this is the magnificent fish auction that is held from Tuesday to Sunday in the Lonja (public exchange market) right in the port area.
The Province of Alicante where Benidorm and Torrevieja are found is defined as having fine sandy beaches, rocky ones and mysterious coves and, these are some of the choices that the 8 kilometres of shore with the Blue Flag of the European Community can also offer you in Moraira. Either on foot or with small boats, this long stretch of beach area has crystal clear waters, restaurants right on the beach, parking areas, Red Cross services and showers.
One nice cute cove with a lot of history is the one called the Portet. It was the place of shelter for Phoenician, Greek, Roman, Arab or privateer sailing or trading ships. Today its a well equipped zone for doing all kinds of nautical sports. And from there we can take a stroll to the watch out tower near the Cap d’Or ( the Golden Cape). This tower is on the most elevated part of the cape, overlooking the beach mentioned before. The Cova de les Cendres ( the Cendres Cove) is an Archaeological field from the Upper Palaeolithic times about 40 metres above sea level. In the near future there will be a museum near this cove with all the findings. The castle of Moraira was built in 1742 and there is a shield from the Royal Borbon family over the door way.
If either coming along the national highway N-332 or by AP-7 ( pay highway), the landscape is filled with vineyards and there is a nice wine cellar to be visited. There is a great street market in Teulada, just 8 kilometres inland from Moraira.
If you are lucky to be there in July, the Patron Saint is the Virgin of the Unsheltered and the Virgin of Carmen who is said to protect the sailors and fishermen. There is a beautiful parade and fireworks and a water procession with the statue of the Virgin floating among endless bouquets of flowers. Quite a scene to be seen!
To sum it up, Moraira is really worth a visit. With its mild Moraira weather and its traditional way of life, the town found its way to maintain its identity and combine it with the goods of modern tourisim. If you are in the area, you should really visit Moraira and see for yourself.
Denia is, as stated by the World Health Organisation, the healthiest climate in the world, with its excellent warm Mediterranean climate and incomparable coastline of clear waters and sandy beaches. The average amount of sunny days a year is 322 and the average day temperature 22 centigrade.
The town has 33.000 inhabitants and lies 100 km away from the 2 capital cities Valencia and Alicante, 58 km north from Benidorm.
The area has an abundance of greenery with vegetation of many kinds especially citrus fruits, prolific orange groves, lemons, grapefruit etc. The vineyards of the Jalon Valley produce some excellent wines.
Denia has 18 kilometres of coastline with fine sandy beaches and rocky coves. Denia beaches have a ‘Blue Flag’designating clean waters.
The town rises near the spectacular cape of San Antonio, where the sun rises on Spain, and at the foot of the El Montgo Mountain (Nature Park). Right at the heart of the town and on the peak of a hill rises Denia´s most emblematic heritage landmark, the Castle, with remains from Roman, Moslem and Christian eras. Known in medieval times as Marquesado de Denia, the name derives from the latin Dianium and the inhabitants are known as ‘Dianenses’
Denia has a lot to offer - five 18 hole golf courses, a first class yacht club, fishing, windsurfing, diving and sailing. Variety of activities in the area include :hiking trips to L’Áigua; excursions to the Montgo Mountain, the Natural Park, the Marine Reservation of Cape San Antonio (diving, snorkelling) or Cape La Nao the Vergel Safari Park.
The town centre surrounds the main street ‘Marques de Campo’ flanked by overhanging trees forming a shady canopy, which runs from a pretty garden area all the way to the port. In this street you will find most modern services including banks, shops, international restaurants, chemists, a clinic, a cinema and the popular pavement cafes.
With a large harbour for ferries, fishermen and pleasure yachts, the fishing fleet plays an important part of local life in Denia where you are always assured of a fresh supply of the fruits of the sea. Here you will find some of the best seafood restaurants in the vicinity. Denia prawns are reputed to be the best in the world. A walk through the narrow streets in the fishermen’s area shows the history, culture and architecture of Iberian, Cartage, Roman, Arabic and Christian civilization.
There is also a daily fast ferry (3,5 hours) to the Balearic Islands of Ibiza, Mallorca. Menorca and Formentera.
Several times a year, the town of Denia is full of festivities. The popular fiesta Fallas is celebrated each March. Huge paper mache statues, called fallas are set up throughout the town, and then set ablaze. July brings the popular Bous a la Mar or Bulls at the Sea The highlight of this week long festival is watching bulls run down the main street Marques de Campo, only to be chased into the Mediterranean sea by those daring enough to enter a makeshift bull ring with them.
