The Costa Blanca / Valencia / Alicante Province region

The Marina Alta has been popular with tourists for many years; Hemmingway being one of Calpe´s frequent visitors during the 1930´s. A mild all year round climate and an average of 320 days sunshine each year adds to the attraction. The World Health Organisation has designated this area as possessing one of the finest climates in the world and the EU has awarded many of the beaches in the area the prestigious "blue flag" for water quality and cleanliness for several years running.
The landscape of the Marina Alta is blessed with miles of unspoilt beaches at Calpe, Moraira and Javea and wonderful rugged mountain vistas. Slightly inland can be found the traditionally beautiful Jalon and Orba valleys, the green paradise with a wealth of citrus, almond and olive trees and a carpet of vines producing wine for the award winning bodegas where samples are freely available!
This area is a unique place that every traveller should visit to sample the beauty, the traditions, the numerous fiestas, the handicrafts, the excellent local cuisine and experience the warmth and friendliness of its people.
Many activities are available : golf, horseriding, sailing, trekking, cycling, walking, climbing, scuba diving, quad biking and, for the less energetic - a host of local markets. All can be experienced year round making this the perfect location to holiday in or relocate to.
Larger places such as Gandia, Denia, Altea and Benidorm are just a short drive away from the peace and tranquillity of this area.
The Moraira / Benissa area
What if you could find a place that had no high rises, beaches off the beaten track, beautiful lush green scenery and best of all....your own private pool, just for you and your family, with no limitations on the times you could use it.
Fancy a midnight swim...... have one.
Want to watch the sunrise or sunset from a sunlounger, floating on cool clear water with just the occasional bird for company.....do it.
Want to take the kids rockpooling, to let them splash in shallow pools warmed by the sun on beaches only known to the locals...ones where you barely see another soul, let alone hundreds of people packed tight like sardines....
For days when you want to venture out and about would you like beautiful scenery and Idyllic locations to visit.....
The ‘Algar Water Falls’ are approximately half hours drive from the apartment and found 2.5 km from the village of Callosa d’Ensarria, at the source of the river from which it's name is derived. The region is well known as a large fruit growing area and in particular for its groves of nisperos.
Once you have gained entrance to the waterfalls, you will feel the fresh clean air and hear the noise of the tumbling waters. You then arrive at the main pool to where the largest of the waterfalls cascades down. Many people take their first dip here, but do remember that the water is icy cold, even in the hot summer months.
There are also plenty of shallow areas suitable for small children and the locals take small dinghy's and the kids are free to play and splash about...
A small wooden bridge has been erected across this pool to enable you to climb the steps up to the top (the picture above is taken from the bridge looking directly into the main waterfall). There are an additional set of steps behind the restaurant, which, although quite steep, are really worth going up, to see the main cascade under rushes, oleanders and fig trees.
Gorgeous Guadalest
Or why not visit gorgeopus Guadalest or The Eagles Nest as it is also known.
Located on the CV-70, approx 30-40 mins away, is the village of Guadalest. Occupying one of the most stunning positions in Spain, this small village is precariously perched on the pinnacle of a granite mountain, giving fabulous views across the valley carved out by the River from which the village takes its name.
Getting to Guadalest by the twisting road that climbs ever upwards, is almost as spectacular as the position of the village, but the breathtaking views make the drive worthwhile even for the more nervous passengers!
On reaching Guadalest you can see why the Moors, who constructed castles to defend the area, considered this place a site of importance.
Some of these castles were unconquerable and the remains of several can still be seen today,
Intriguingly the old village and castle is accessed through a tunnel carved from the rock and when you reach the other end and see the ancient houses, you seem to have been transported to another age.
Guadalest has plenty of museums so you can learn more about its history, little crafts shops and places to buy a souvenir of your visit. Costing only a few euros the visit through the tunnel to the village is definitely worthwhile as the castle tour (starting at 10am) takes in the dungeon, (great for the kids) and offers fantastic views across the valley from cobbled footpaths and lookout points.
A livelier Alternative
If you are looking for a livelier time, when you can drag yourself away from the pool, why not take the half hour trip to Benidorm to visit either Terra Mitica..a theme park or the many big and small water slides at Aqualandia.
Or for a slightly less hair raising time...Try Mundo Mar..Benidorms Sea World and Wildlife Park.
The Area
We are an hours drive from Alicante airport and less than ten minutes from
Moraira town centre with its cosmopolitan atmosphere and abundance of restaurants offering not only English cuisine but also French, German, Dutch and of course Spanish. Many offer menu del dia and a 3 course meal with with wine starts from as little as 8 euro's..
For those of you who wish to do a little walking, the nearest shops, bars, restaurants are approx 20 minutes walk downhill and the beach is 30 minutes.
Taxi's are plentiful and relatively inexpensive.
There is also have an Iceland, so any must have UK stuff..(usually for the kids) can be purchased locally
Your Accommodation
With all this on your doorstep wouldn't you also like the reassurance that you are staying in a clean and safe environment..One that, though located in a quiet peaceful area on the hillside, amongst individual, privately owned villas was only five minutes drive from all amenities and offered all the comforts of home.
