The Costa Blanca / Valencia / Alicante Province region

The Costa Blanca (White Coast) is now one of the most cosmopolitan areas in Europe, having a coastline of over 200 kms and made up of some of the finest beaches on the Mediterranean. Many of these beaches, including the ones around Moraira, enjoy a 'blue flag' status - the highest award that can be given within the EU. However, just a short drive inland and you'll find hillsides covered with terraced vineyards and lush-green citrus orchards, a legacy of the agricultural traditions of the area, and dotted with charming villages full of narrow streets and flower-filled squares.
The Costa Blanca region of Spain also has one of the best climates in the world as defined by the UN's World Health Organisation. Enjoying on average over 300 days of sunshine a year, summer temperatures rarely fall below 30C whilst winters are typically very mild with average temperatures around 18C.
Clues to the region's history are very evident as you explore its villages, towns and cities. Place names have their Arabic roots but it's the architecture which is most striking. Ancient villages were built on hilltops and always featured winding streets to aid defence against marauders. GUADALEST is a fortress village that dates back to the middle ages, perched at over 1500m on a mountain peak about 25 Kms inland from Benidorm; it is still only accessible via a tunnel passing through 15m of solid rock.
The inland areas of the Northern Costa Blanca are considered by many to be some of the most beautiful parts of rural Spain. Drive inland about 30 minutes from Moraira and you come to the JALON VALLEY which is an excellent example of this type of countryside with its natural beauty, lush vegetation and stunning mountain backdrops. The whole area is particularly attractive with olive and orange groves, vineyards and, early in the year, the wonderful scent of almond blossom.
For those seeking a more cosmopolitan experience, VALENCIA is about 1 hour's drive to the north. This is Spain's third largest city and offers superb modern shopping facilities as well as a wonderful, traditional fresh meat, fruit and vegetable market. Drive about 45 minutes to the south and you'll find BENIDORM with its unrivalled nightlife. However, other attractions at Benidorm include Mundo Mar Marine and Exotic Animal Park. The Park is home to a wide range of creatures living in a simulated natural environment with one of the highlights of the day being the amazing dolphin show. Next to Mundo Mar Marine is Aqualandia, which features a multitude of water entertainments. Finally, there's Terra Mitica. This spectacular theme park will transport you back to the Greek and Roman eras and has one of the biggest roller coasters in Europe.
The Moraira / Cumbre del Sol area
CUMBRE DEL SOL (Mountain of the Sun) is an exclusive residential area only about 10 minutes drive from the small, pretty fishing town of MORAIRA. However, because of its elevation, the views from Cumbre del Sol across the Mediterranean are superb and on most days you can see the Balearic Islands. The local beach, Playa del Moraig, is about 1.5 kms from the villa and is a small, picturesque cove used almost entirely by local residents. Facilities include a small beach-bar, toilets, and the hire of sun-beds and parasols. Elsewhere on Cumbre del Sol you'll find excellent restaurants, an international supermarket, banks, and a pharmacy; for the more energetic there are also tennis courts and a horse riding centre.
"Bienvenido" is not an unfamiliar word to the people of MORAIRA. It means "welcome" in Spanish, and it's a warm welcome you'll find here, in one of the loveliest towns of the Costa Blanca region. Originally, at the end of the 18th century when nearby TEULADA was a farming village, crops were transported by sea, embarking from the natural ports. As time went by, locals started to settle near their working places, dedicating themselves to fishing. Thus were laid the foundations of Moraira. Today, the system remains as it has for hundreds of years: the fishermen go to sea in the early hours of the morning to catch the produce, which is sold later that day by auction at the traditional fish market. This market has grown over the years and is now one of the most important fish markets in the region. Another ancient trade is that of wine making; a lot of the land around Moraira is dedicated to the growing of the Muscatel grapes with many local vineyards producing excellent quality wine. Today, visitors can still stroll among narrow, flower-decorated streets in the town or just relax in one of the many pavement cafes. The town centre is an attractive blend of the old and the new with a wide selection of boutiques, shops, bars and some excellent restaurants offering a wide choice of Spanish and international cuisine. Moraira's main beach, L'Ampolla, at the foot of the castle, is an ideal 'family' beach with lots of golden sand and excellent facilities while just 1.5 kms away is EL PORTET. Surrounded by steep hills, this sheltered bay with its gently sloping beach is perfect for safe swimming. A traditional weekly market takes place in Moraira every Friday. Besides buying fresh vegetables and fruit, you can find a large selection of other merchandise such as plants, leather goods, and many other products from local craftsmen.
One of Moraira's most important festivals is the FIESTA OF MOORS & CHRISTIANS, usually held in June. However, other towns in the area celebrate this festival at different times during the summer. Theatrically presented in impressive costumes, the townspeople are separated into Moorish and Christian filas (groups), and hold marches and mock battles which take place at various times and places throughout Moraira. The high point of this fantastic fiesta is the procession and firework display on the last day.
CALPE, with its numerous sandy beaches, is about 30 minutes drive away. Here you'll also find the majestic Rock of Ifach. It was originally called the 'Northern Rock' by Phoenician traders in order to distinguish it from Gibraltar. The volcanic Rock measures over 300 m high and is now a nature reserve. However, for those wishing to get a breathtaking view of the coastline, there is a path which takes you to the peak.
JAVEA, about 20 minutes drive away, is split into 3 distinct parts: namely, the old town, port, and beach area. The mediaeval old town is a maze of narrow winding streets, white fronted houses adorned with wrought-iron balconies and gothic style windows, and many ancient churches. The old town leads down to the fishing port and harbour; home to an interesting collection of bars and restaurants, many of them serving the catch of the day. Javea has many beaches but the main area is Playa del Arenal. And, as in Pamplona, bull running through the streets of the old town still takes place on an annual basis.
DENIA, about 30 minutes away, is the largest of all the local towns. However, the town, rich in history, has still retained a lot of its old charm; for example, the fishermen's quarter preserves its delightful cobbled streets and whitewashed buildings. There is an abundance of beaches near the town, many of them consistently winning the European 'blue flag' for safety and cleanliness. Denia's main focal point, though, is its impressive 16th century castle which dominates the town.
Within just a short drive from the villa, you'll find a range of LEISURE ACTIVITIES to satisfy even the most discerning holiday-maker. For example, there are three excellent golf courses nearby with one of them, the Olazabal-designed course at La Sella, also offering tennis and squash facilities. In nearby Moraira and Javea, you'll also find diving schools and jet-ski facilities. However, for those wanting a more relaxing holiday, there are many scenic walks with the tourist office on Cumbre del Sol offering free guided walks of the area during the summer.

Guestbook for Villa Ladera
This was our first visit to Europe, and I couldn’t think of a better place to start the Spanish phase of our vacation than Villa Ladera. Superb views combined with high standards of comfort and accommodation made it an ideal location. We’ve already recommended Villa Ladera to a number of our friends who are planning to visit Europe next year…... Robert & Jean Mackenzie, Montreal, Canada.
After three holidays in Villa Ladera, the kids now definitely regard this as their second home (I wish!). The local beaches are perfect for family holidays, and to sit on the terrace in the evening with drink in hand just looking out over the Mediterranean is sheer bliss…..Please reserve the same dates for us again next year!....David & Rachael Hayes, Chelmsford.
Villa Ladera proved an ideal base for the walking holiday we’d planned in this part of the Costa Blanca. After long walks in the Sierra Bernia mountains, and exploring the local villages, to return each evening to the comfort and luxury of your villa was really lovely. And because of our late arrival on day one, the ‘welcome’ pack was very much appreciated!....Tom & Megan Evans, Swansea.
Thank you for letting us stay in your lovely house. It had all the equipment we needed for a really good holiday. Everyone enjoyed themselves and no one wanted to go home, especially the children. Will come again next year……Bjorn & Elisabeth Carlsson, Gothenburg, Sweden
Combine superb accommodation with wonderful views of the Mediterranean, and excellent local beaches, and you have the receipt for a perfect holiday. Thank you!.....Colin & Susan Matthews, Coventry
