The Northern France / Nord-Pas-de-Calais region
Historical area of Northern France, taking in the Sombe and many battlefields (Agincourt etc.) listed in history books both medieval and from the great wars. Climate is similar to the very south of England, with slightly earlier spring and summer. Lots of golf courses, fishing, walks, bike rides, motor sport, children's theme parks, beaches, shopping, ports and places of interest all within easy reach.
The TGV can allow easy access to Paris (50 mins) from Arras, which is an hour away, or from Boulogne or Lille. The largest cathedral in Europe is at Amien and there are lots of interesting places to go, both for shopping, wine, food, fun for kids etc. etc. Food in the Pas de Calais is diverse, from basic local dishes served through family run bars and restaurants, to culinery delights in specialist restaurants. There is something for all tastes.
Montreuil-sur-Mer area
The historical walled town of Montreuil allows walks round the ramparts, but you are never far from the town centre with its shopping lanes and squares with outside dining cafes and restaurants. The coast is close by with Berck being the liveliest coastal town. Le Touquet is about a 30 minute drive and has a wealth of upmarket shops and restaurants. Hesdin is 20 minutes with its famous Thursday market and friendly cafes in the square.
In summer months, a music festival is held, with live music of all types featured weekly. Brocantes (local markets similar to car boot sales) are held virtually every weekend at different villages in the area. Golf course abound in the Cote d'Opalle (Opal Coast), with challenging courses or those ideal for the high handicap. All are friendly and inexpensive compared to the UK or other countries.
How to get there
Detailed directions are automatically sent to visitors once booking confirmed. Access can be by Channel Tunnel ( about an hour away), Ferries (Boulogne about 50 minutes - Calais 15 minutes further). Eurostar comes to Fretune, about 45 minutes from us.
There is a small airport at Tolouse, which is just under a 30 munite drive.

Further details indoors: The main bedroom is comfortable and leads out to the courtyard, which is lovely for early sunshine breakfasts under the gazebo. A BBQ is supplied for intimate eating Al Fresco. The courtyard is south facing, so gets sun for most of the day. A separate terrace is to the front of the property for quiet evening meals or to chill out at any time of the day. Inside is delightful, with vaulted ceilings and exposed beams, yet incorporating the latest insulation techniques allowing the property to be warm in winter and cool in summer.
The cottage is in the quiet area of the village in a no-through road. The silence is wonderful and the songs of the birds in the morning is an experience, yet inside, the double glazing gives peace and quiet! Our one rule when we converted the stables was 'would we live here' and the answer is most definitely - YES! The cottage has character, but is totally liveable and has everything you need to make your stay comfortable and restful. Our guests tell us that they would love to take the bed home with them as it is so comfortable!!
The mezzanine is a chill-out area that is great for reading (you can still see the TV/DVD from up there) or relaxing. It is suitable for one child (two at a pinch), but the drop-down stairs are a bit steep, so is not suitable for very young children. We have a travel cot available if required and there is a convertible sofa in the lounge area (very comfortable and a proper bed-settee). All linen is included in the price.
Further details outdoors: The small garden and terrace, together with the courtyard area with gazebo, allow lots of options when chilling out or dining. There are sun-loungers in the courtyard, which is screened to give privacy and also creating a sun-trap for those who wish to top up their tan! The area is totally surrounded by countryside and hills, affording a lovely tranquil setting. There are safe walks and the area is crime-free and friendly.
We have a dog, cats, geese and chickens, plus apple, plum, pear and cherry trees. Subject to availability, we have fresh eggs, home-made preserves, eggs and other products that we leave for incoming guests together with milk, sugar, tea, bread and butter etc. so that you are able to have an evening snack or breakfast without having to divert to the supermarket if you arrive later in the day. Some French spoken by members of our family.
