The Montreuil-sur-Mer / Beussent area
Beussent lies just 10 minutes north of Montreuil in the beautiful Course Valley. It's a quiet and peaceful location with a bar, restaurant, school and post office in around the village sqaure by the site of the old flour mill on the river. Beussent has it's own chocolate factory which has over 60,000 visitors each year! In july a farmers market visits the village every Friday evening. Like all villages, there are a good tradition of fetes and festivals held throughout the year.
The fortified town of Montreuil is the nearest large town at about 10 minutes. It has spectacular views from it's ramparts and its where Victor Hugo stayed in 1867 and based some of the characters he met in the town for Les Miserables. Montreuil is a rich historical site with lots of places to see and good bars and restaurants to relax and unwind and watch the world go by! In the summer there are sound and light shows of Les Miserables and the brocante (flea market of antiques and bric 'a' brac) on Bastille Day is not to be missed on 14th July!

“Excellent accommodation, ideal for children”
Another extremely enjoyable stay at Helen and Laurence's well equipped gite.
This is always our first choice of accommodation if we are staying in the Pas de Calais area and we have holidayed here at least six or seven times over the last three or four years. We often come with family, including grandchildren, and have greatly appreciated the facilities. There is a good size lawn for football, badminton etc. with a swing and slides for the younger child. If the weather is bad the games room has a free pool table and a good selection of board games and children's toys etc.
The gites are always meticulously clean and are well equipped (albeit no oyster knife !). A very nice touch is that basic essentials such as tea, coffee and milk are there for you on arrival together with a welcoming bottle of wine and a taster from Chocolats de Beussent.
Helen and Laurence go to great trouble to make their guests welcome and are always very willing to help with local information or any problems that may arise.
The gites are good value for money and we are looking forward to our next visit.

“Home from home”
We've been coming to Clubhouse Gites every year for several years and we will continue to do so, it really is a home from home. Laurence and Helen are such brilliant hosts, whilst always on hand to help in any way possible, they never intrude. Everything you could possibly need is supplied. It caters for all ages with plenty to do at the gite. The area is so pretty, tranquil and relaxing but has easy access to so many places and activities and only 45 mins from Calais - bonus. We'll shortly be booking our next trip!
“The very best French family holiday experience you could ever wish for”
We have been visiting Clubhouse Gites since our children were little (they are now aged 10 and 14 years respectively) and we can not express in enough superlatives how fantastic our holiday experiences have been year on year!! So much so, that in fact we have often been 2 or 3 times a year, to make sure that we can enjoy the excellent facilities in sun, rain and snow!! The key thing which draws us back year on year is the superb hosting which we receive from Laurence and Helen! (and Daniel too of course!). Nothing is ever too much trouble and they always go above and beyond when making you feel welcome. On each visit a bottle of wine and locally made chocolates are left in the living room ready as a very welcome gift, in addition to tea, coffee and milk being provided free of charge. The gites themselves are much more than home from home. They are the best we have ever stayed in in France. All bedding, towels, cooking and cleaning equipment are provided, as well as dishwasher, satellite TV and wifi, and the standard of the accomodation is second to none! Yes single beds - however we push ours together to make a huge double!! You also have access to a laundry room and games room - both of which are free of charge! The games room is a particular hit with the children and as a family we have spent hours of fun enjoying the facilities of the pool table, juke box, ice cream fridge, games, books and magazines! In addition to all of that, there is also a wonderfully large garden for the children to run around in and play on the swings, slide, ping pong table, football pitch and badminton area. (BBQ also included!) Our children even went to go and play with Daniel in his own garden and felt very special indeed! A highlight of our most recent visit was a surprise party Helen and Laurence helped us to plan for the children's Grandma who was 70 during our stay. She loved it! The nicest thing was that all of the families staying during the week (whom we had never met before til that week) came to the party because we all got on so well, and Laurence, Helen and Daniel came too - a real family experience! We are always made to feel very much part of the family now and even have special cups and champagne glasses provided for us when we arrive because Laurence and Helen pay such excellent attention to detail and know what we like! In August of this year, we spent a week at the gite and unfortunately our car broke down in Boulogne. Both Laurence and Helen went out of their way to ensure that all of us were safe. Laurence took us back to pick up our car the next day from the garage an hour away and even went to the trouble of going to the supermarket for us to make sure that we had enough food! We have already booked for 2 visits next year and can't wait to return!!! It's a hidden gem in Pas De Calais and well worth a visit (or more!!).

“Another great trip”
We have just returned from our seventh stay at clubhouse gites and again enjoyed another fabulous break. Nothing seems too much trouble for Helen and Laurence, from recommending restaurants and local events, to even helping us book tee times at the nearby golf courses, which I may add are simply superb ! Their local knowledge is particularly reassuring and makes each trip hassel free and fun. The gites are always spotless and well stocked so we never have to worry about leaving anything at home, plus having a games room and a large garden ensured there was always something to keep us entertained especially after a day out. In short the wonderful restaurants (Le Patio in Montreuil is always a favourite), some very challenging golf courses, (Belle Dune and St Omer are unbelievable), and the home from home service from our hosts means we cant wait to come back !

“English Speaking - Family Friendly”
We have always enjoyed our visits to Helen and Lawrence's gites. It is practical, tidy and clean. They always leave chocolates and wine for the guests which are a lovely treat and thought. The information on local attractions is really helpful for all ages and we have always found them willing to answer questions. A very enjoyable stay and highly recommended. The gites are wonderfully positioned, easy reach to the beach or inland attractions.
Ideally positioned in a quiet rural setting. The accommodation has all you could want for a break in this area of France. This is was our second stay at Clubhouse and it was the warm welcome, clean... more

“Superb!”
I am deeply upset reading one of the reviews below and I can categorically state that you couldn't meet a more accomodating family and perfect setting for exploring the North of France. Please don't be put off by one persons opinion!
We (family of 4) have stayed at Clubhouse Gites for the past 5 years at various times of the year - summer and winter. For the last 3 years we have stayed for New Year and brought many friends with us. If our arrival conincided with the shops being closed Lawrence has always made sure that our fridge was stocked with the basics and a meal for our arrival.
My husband has stayed with friends whilst touring the WW1 war sites and taken advantage of the french breakfasts that can be booked upon request.
The apartment is very well equipped with everything you could want for cooking in the evenings. We have cooked New Years dinner for 12 in it!
The bedrooms are very comfortable and have plenty of space for clothes. Very warm in the winter and lovely velux windows to open in the summer.
The TV plays Sky so you if you can't miss an episode of Corrie or that crucial footy match - no problem! Lawrence is a keen footie fan so is more than happy to tune you in!
There is a well equipped games room with table football, pool table, juke box and many many books and magazines to read. A must for those with children.
There is a local supermarket nearby and Helen and Lawrence are always on hand to offer advice on places to visit and where to eat. There is a local pub in the village where you can stop off at the end of a lovely evening walk seeing the fabulous countryside.

“Home from Home”
Have stayed at Clubhouse Gites on approximately 8 occassions and I have to say that I cannot recommend it highly enough. Laurence and Helen, and their son, always make us so welcome that it actually feels like you're visiting family! They are always so helpful, nothing is ever too much trouble, sorting out golf courses, restaurants, places to see....I could go on. The appartments are spotless and it's so lovely to walk in and be able to make a cuppa straight away as there is even a welcome bottle of milk in the fridge and all the tea/coffee/sugar/sweeteners you could want. Having the beds ready made so you can just fall into them is bliss and they are very comfy. Any question you have will be answered willingly by Laurance or Helen, nothing is ever too much trouble for them. The fact that they have always been like this from the first day we met them has meant that we have returned time and again with family, friends and work colleagues. The surrounding area is beautiful and there is someting to please eveyone there. Looking forward to December when we head back for yet another visit! Never fails to impress.
We have been to Clubhouse Gites about a dozen times now and usually come twice a year in the Spring and Autumn. Our next visit is planned for mid-November. It really is like home from home and nothing is too much trouble for Laurence and Helen who are fabulous hosts. The apartments are spotless and very well equipped. The little touches make such a difference e.g. tea, coffee, milk and sugar are provided and there is usually a complimentary bottle of wine and a sample of the locally produced chocolates waiting for you on arrival. Not having to bring things like washing-liquid, cleaning products, towels and bed linen is also a big help. Although there's a lot to see and do in the local area, there is also an excellent games room with lots of board games, a pool table, table football and a library to keep you amused, if you don't fancy going out or the weather's not so good. On sunny days there's a large garden with plenty of room for children to play and for adults to relax. We have absolutely no hesitation in recommending Clubhouse Gites.

“Heavenly place, wonderful hosts!”

My family and I have been coming here every year (often on more than one occasion) for over five years and it has become our home away from home. It is a lovely place to stay for all ages. We used to bring my grandad along even when he was 98 and my boyfriend and I have been coming with my parents since I was about 15. An hour from the coast, and set in a beautifully quiet and typically french village we always come back feeling relaxed and looking forward to the next visit. Laurence, Helen and Daniel are the perfect hosts and are always more than willing to answer any questions and give top tips on the local area! Pool table (free of charge), English channels, outside games and more mean that there are things to entertain all the family even when you just want to spent a quiet day in.
We love love LOVE it here and all I can say to finish off is that im gutted I cant get time off work to come with my parents again in November, even though me and my boyfriend are now in our early 20's!!!

All the facilities you would require. Excellent standard. Warm welcome, obliging, extremely helpful and accomodating hosts. Excellent base for exploring north of France. Able to pick and mix beaches with country and city visits.
Highly recommended.

“Dont stay here if you have children !”
Although initially plaesed as gite seemed very clean and well equipped (toilet didnt flush very well and there were 4 single beds not a double), we soon realised that everything was to much trouble, our son rang the doorbell once and this was not appreciated by tne owner who had to answer the door, shock horror ! It also became evident that our exited sons who were playing (not breaking) boisterously were not welcom at all. The owner went completly over the top, we felt so emmbarrased and awarkward that we left the next mrning before 8.Why do these kind of people work in the hospitality industry, dreadful experience very upsetting.
Response: In response to this review, we have been advised by Holiday Lettings customer support to reply to each point individually in question - so sorry for the length of this response. 1.Yes we can confirm that each apartment is very clean for each rental as it takes 2 people over 1 hour 30 minutes to clean each one on chageover day! 2.Yes the apartments are extremely well equipped with everything you could possibly need for your self catering or B + B stay. 3.We can't legislate for toilet misuse as it was working perfectly prior to the start of the rental. 4.Nowhere do we advertise double beds and they didn't ask for a double bed when they booked. 5."Everything being too much trouble" couldn't be further from the truth. We pride ourselves on our helpful and friendly nature and we consider this the most insulting remark. 6.After the family had checked in early they popped to the local supermarket. On returning one of the boys rang the doorbell after repeatedly being told by his father not to do so. I came to the door as it rings in our house and we were expecting other guests. I was polite to the father and said that it wasn't a problem. He apologised to me. 7.This point depends on one's personal definition of 'boisterously'. There were indeed no breakages by this family - but here is an idea of the so called 'playing behaviour' of their boys: Attacking our 8 year old son by punching and kicking, repeatedly jumping in and out of a baby's cot, riding around the games room and entrance hall on a toddler's tricycle bike and banging into furniture, fixture's and fitting's and walls, aggresively fighting eachother - falling into furniture and disturbing other guests, continuing to fight outside and ending up chasing our son around the garden throwing swingball, badminton and tennis rackets at him narrowly missing him. It's important to note that these children were 12 and 10 years old at the time of the rental. At all times we asked them politely to stop riding the tricycle, jumping in the cot and fighting our son. 8.When pointing out our concerns to the parents we politely said that "we thought they should know" and "we didn't want to make a big thing of it" and "children will be children" and "not to worry" . We can only assume that these people didn't like being told that their children's behaviour was unacceptable. Under the circumstances we were at all times very polite and perfectly reasonable. 9.Yes it was only too right that the parents should have felt embarrased and awkward. 10.The family left after 1 day of a 2 night short break. They did this without raising any issues with us, without saying goodbye and without locking the front door! 11.Everyone who has stayed here before knows that we work in this industry because we love it and take great pride in what we offer our clients. 12.We are sorry if anyone feels upset while on their holiday - but if this family are frequent travellers then they must get upset quite a lot!! To sum up, we would like to point out that the father had apologised for one of his son's - putting it down to a 'behavioural problem' condition. We rather felt that he expected us to accept this as an excuse for the utter mayhem the 2 boys were causing. The family arrived here at 11am, even though check in is 4pm. They asked us if they could drop their bags off. We were very happy to help. We said we would try to get their apartment ready for 2pm, so that they could come back early. We recommended somewhere nice to go for lunch. They came back at 1pm which was still inconvenient but we were very accommodating and happy to help them. To those who know us (clients and friends) then you will know this review to be an utter joke. To those looking to come here for the first time, then rest assured that thousand's of children have holidayed here. So please read the review above and the reviews in the guestbook below. Also you can read our visitor's book which is on our website where you will find more that 180 reviews for you to read or phone us directly if you have any questions. Trip advisor is a good tool if used correctly. Happy holidaying!
We found everything we need (and more) included. We took our two grandsons (11 & 7) who thoroughly enjoyed the freedom and activities available whilst we were busy getting meals or preparing to go out. They were always quite safe. We also enjoyed the surrounding countryside and the wonderful beaches, all within easy reach. Our hosts were charming and helpful throughout our stay. We would certainly go again if the opportunity arose.
"Our second stay at Clubhouse Gites over the New Year period (our 5th stay overall)! Superb once again - the kids loved it". The Johnsons, Hayes, Kent. December 2008 / January 2009. The Taylors, Aylesbury. November 2008. "Thanks for a fab wekend. "Many thanks for a truly warm welcome and wonderful accommodation - a real home from home! So much so, we all didn't want to go home!
