The Northern France / Nord-Pas-de-Calais region
This coastal region of nord-pas de Calais is known as the Opal coast. Montreuil offers something for everyone with its fine restaurants, bistros, theatre and localmarket offering a variety of produce. There are many activities available in the surrounding area from country walks and signposted cycle routes to canoeing and horseriding. Montreuil-sur-Mer area
A few of the local attractions on the opal coast, Les Sept Vallees a luscious wooded landscape bisected by the River Canche,which almost flows past the front door on its way to Le Touquet. A superb network of trails,none too taxing.Walks in the forest around Hesdin have particular appeal.The small historic town has a good choice of restaurants to round off a morning's walking.It also has amarket every Thursday,the busiest in the Sept Vallees.Look out for local specialitieslike pave hesdinoise,a crunchy type of chocolate,and locally cured meats. The stretch of coast between Calais and the River Somme can lay claim to having some of the best beaches in France with miles of unspoilt sand and endless horizons where the sea seems to melt into the sky. Try the popular Berck or Stella-Plage beaches for a stroll,sunbath or even a dip if your feeling brave.
