Northern France region

The Nord-Pas-de-Calais region hugs the northern coast of France with its 90km of beaches, sand dunes and cliffs stretched between Calais and Berck-sur-Mer. The provincial capital of Nord-Pas-de-Calais is Lille with its impressive Grand'Place in the medieval old town.

With its many historic sites, old market towns, and miles of quiet beaches it has been a favourite holiday destination for over 100 years with families from Paris and other large French cities. Now that the tunnel makes it so convenient, many British visitors come for weekend breaks and longer holidays, discovering for themselves the peace and quiet and exceptional value for money that has become so hard to find at home. The region abounds with interesting sites, good restaurants and shopping, and a taste of real French life much closer to home and at lower cost than other regions of France.

The coastal towns are the region's highlights. Calais, 'the most English town in France', lies just 40km across the coast from England.

Whilst other seaside spots to explore include nostalgic Le Touquet, a throwback to the 1920s, the fishing village of Etaples and windswept Wimereux. The historic beaches of Dunkerque and Boulogne-sur-Mer, with its appetising fish restaurants and attractive medieval quarter, also deserve a trip.

At St Omer (off exit 3 of the A26 autoroute) is La Coupole.

With the help of modern technology and faithful reconstructions, you will discover what life was like during the German occupation of Northern France as well as Hitler's secret weapons and the first steps in the conquest of space with the V2 rocket.

This gigantic bunker, 5 metres thick was dug into the chalk by Russian & Polish prisoners of war, protected the biggest underground V2 rocket launch ever built.

The centre is open throughout the year.

Marenla is a small peaceful village which is a 10 minute drive to Montreuil-sur- mer.

An old fortified town that centuries ago was a sea port, is our nearest town. You can walk the ramparts and stroll cobbled streets with a multitude of bars, cafes and good restaurants to choose from. Outside the town are the main supermarkets, all just minutes from the house

Le Touquet is close by and is a bustling trendy town full of boutiques, bars and restaurants. There is a water park on the sea front for the children and fabulous beaches to wander along plus 2 casinos for anyone who might want to try their luck!. Le Touquet is also famous for its golf courses. Go across the bridge & you will find the Etaples seafood restaurants and markets.

Many people think of Boulogne simply as a port of entry and somewhere to drive straight through en route south. However, this is a mistake as it is a vibrant interesting area with all sorts of discoveries waiting to be made.

As well as the port and marina, where the sea world Nausica us situated, there is a large shopping area running up the hill towards the Haute Ville, the Old Town. This is a maze of small roads and walkways full of restaurants and bars, antique shops and old houses. The Cathedral of Notre Dame dominates the Old Town and looks out over Boulogne. Inside, it has the 2nd largest dome in Europe and is well worth a visit as is the old chateau, (which is now a museum).

Just outside of Boulogne there are the hypermarkets, Citi Europe and the Designer Outlet. There are all types of shops where you can get the latest fashion wear, furniture, bedding etc. At Carrefour & Tesco, in Citi Europe, there is a vast choice of wines/spirits & beers from around the world. There is another huge selection at Auchan in Boulogne St. Martin.

Also worth a day out is Aqualud at Le Touquet.

Aqualud is the biggest water amusement park in the north of France. You can enjoy swimming in warm water even on a cold, windy day at AQUALUD. The vast glass pyramid offers a wide range of indoor water-based activities - though it's not open all year round.

There's a giant water slide, the "River of Surprises", artificial waves, bubbling baths - and afterwards a sauna complex...

Another attraction for the whole family is Bagatelle. A family attraction park with water rides, animal enclosures and much more, located close to Berck.

For the younger children - 'Dennlys Parc' is a beautifully landscaped fun amusement park, that will occupy them for a day.

Mon Desir is for those interested in war graves, historic sites & military history. Agincourt and Crecy are close. Arras, Vimy, Bethune, the Somme, Albert and many others can be visited easily. At Etaples, a working fishing port across the bridge from Le Touquet, there is a beatifully maintained graveyard and there are still concrete WW2 gun emplacements in the forest.

Local shopping facilities include the market towns of Hesdin (15 mins) and Montreuil (10mins). For more serious shoppers Calais with its Citi de Europe has shopping for everyone. Boulogne with stylish boutiques, art and furniture galleries . Antique lovers will find a treasure trove in Montreuil (10 mins) including a weekly auction sale, while fashion junkies should make a bee-line for Le Touquet (45 mins) with its branches of Paris boutiques, smart cocktail bars and casinos.

One of the great things to do in France is to eat out and in our region you are spoiled for choice.

You may want to splash out on a Michelin starred restaurant such as the Auberge de le Grenouilliere in La Madelaine-sous-Montreuil, Le Chateau or Le Jeraboam, (in the Hermitage Hotel), in Montreuil sur Mer or slightly further afield in Le Touquet, The Westminster or the Swiss House.

There's loads of activities for anyone remotely sporty, with horse riding, tennis, swimming, windsurfing, sand yachting and fishing all available at a number of centres within 30 minutes drive. Walkers and cyclists are well catered for with a wide variety of signposted itineraries and you may find the novel idea of taking a country walk with a donkey for company (and to carry the picnic) appealing.

Keen golfers will appreciate the choice of 11 top quality courses within an hour's comfortable drive.

"Best house we've rented in France ...."

We could no find fault right from the start of the booking process to the end of our stay at the house. We've rented a number of self-catering properties in France over the years and this was by far the best. The property itself was spotless and the "little touches" made all the difference i.e. very warm welcome from Richard (who lives next door which is great in case you have any questions). bottle of wine, milk and mineral water waiting for us when we arrived, brilliantly equipped kitchen, lots of DVDs/books/freeview TV etc. The location of the property is perfect for visiting lots of places of interest and the countryside is amazing - we went for lots of great walks. Whilst there weren't any children with us on our break, I would imagine they would have loved the huge garden (as well as Molly - Richard's dog - who is very friendly) and there are loads of toys/activities to keep them busy such as a pool table, board games, badminton set etc. All in all, we had a great break and we hope to return.

"Restful Retreat"

We spent a relaxing few days at this lovely property. The house was very spacious, well equipped and perfect for a family. The kitchen was ideal for informal family dining. Very cosy lounge with a log fire. Our children loved the basketball, huge garden and games and were very happy here. Merenla is a small village but not far to drive to nearby places such as Montreuil, Le Touquet, Azincourt and Berck. The owner was very friendly, helpful and welcoming. Thank you for a great stay.

"Fantastic house, fabulous owners, A***** holiday, highly recommended"

Karen & Richard were there to welcome us even though we arrived very late Friday night. They took the time to explain about the facilities in the house, show us around and didn't rush any part of the welcome. They were on hand during our stay to advise on local places to go, places to eat, best beaches etc but we certainly never felt they were intruding on our privacy even though they were in the house next door. We had five children with us on our holiday ranging from 11 to 14 and were probably very noisy at times, late into the evening, this never seemed to be a problem with Karen & Richard, we certainly weren't walking on eggshells. The boys played football in the garden, again very noisy, and all the kids explored in the woods. The house is very spacious with four bedrooms and two sofa beds in the lounge (where we put the three teenage boys, well away from the other bedrooms!). It is extremely well equipped with everything you would find in your own home, even down to the simple ingredients for cooking such as flour, oil, herbs, salt, pepper etc. Soap in all the bathrooms, toilet paper in all the toilets, washing powder in the laundry, really made life so much eaiser (and a welcome bottle of wine to enjoy on our first evening). There are lots of games in the house suitable for all ages.
We have stayed in many different holiday homes in Europe and this is certainly the best we have ever enjoyed. Lots of information in the house about local places to visit, and a guest book packed with ideas and do's & don'ts. I would highly recommend this as a fantastic place to stay in France, only an hour from Calais and very easy to find. Karen & Richard are fantastic owners. We had a holiday to remember (despite the rain!).

"Wonderful relaxing holiday in great location! Can't wait to go back."

This was our first stay in France and we weren't disappointed. The house was clean and well equipped. There was plenty to keep the children entertained with the pool table and basketball hoop. The location was very good, with a short drive to Montreuil, and easy driving distances to Le Touquet and Bolougne which are all worth a visit. The one day that it rained we went to Opal Adventure (near St Cecile) which is similar to Go Ape in the UK. Again a great day out - enjoyed by adults and kids alike. The hosts were very welcoming - we look forward to visiting again.

"Excellent quality spacious accomodation, huge garden, helpful hosts."

We stayed for two weeks during the summer and were blessed with pretty good weather. The house is extremely well equipped with everything anyone would need for a great holiday. The kitchen is large with all good quality appliances and all the equipment you would need. The garden is stunning, very large and a haven for wildlife and we enjoyed seeing the various species of birds including Woodpeckers, Jays and also listening the Owl's during the night. The owners are on hand to deal with any issues and are very helpful and friendly and provide a warm welcome on arrival.

The area itself is a good base for touring the region and there are fantastic beaches near by, including Berck and Le Touquet Paris Plage. We also travelled a little further afield to Bruges, which is a well worthwhile trip and took approximately 1hour 40mins for the journey. Local supermarkets are easily accessible and there are two within 10 minutes drive. The area is also close by for the historical minded, with lots of WW1 and WW2 related memorials including La Coupole (V2 Bunker) and Vimy Ridge (battlefields and Memorial). Montrieul is also worth a visit and has a nice walk around the ramparts.

All-in-all, an excellent property for a chilled out holiday in a region that has more to offer than some may think.

"Perfect and great value"

I have stayed in lots of rental apartments with large extended groups but never been to one with a kitchen so well equipt. The owners ( a lovely very friendly couple from Leeds) had thought of everything: mixing bowls, chesses graters, lego for the children, mik and wine on arraival etc. We were a group of three mums and seven children ( two of which have additional needs) and the house was perfect. The house was very clean and we were not made to feel uncomfortable about 7 unruly children. In fact we felt very welcome. The large garden was great for exploring and the house was very spacious ( and safe) for them to run wild. All four bedrooms were a good size and the extra snug bit on the first floor made a great 'kids club' area. The beach is about half an hour away and worth the visit. Would definately recommend it
