Enquire nowThe Northern France / Nord-Pas-de-Calais region
The pretty village of Inxent is in the Valley de la Course, located near the historic town of Montreuil-sur-mer. The river Course flows through the village where Licensed Trout and Eel fishing for visitors are available in season. There is an equestrian centre that you can visit for horse riding and pony trap rides.
Within five minutes walk from our front door there is the Auberge d'Inxent. It is very friendly. They serve good food and have an exceptionally good wine list.
Five minutes in the car the opposite way in the village of Beussent you have Le Lignier Restaurant and Bar which serves excellent food and drink
Montreuil-sur-Mer, an old fortified town that centuries ago was a sea port, is our nearest town. You can walk the ramparts and the cobbled streets with a multitude of bars, cafes and good restaurants to choose from. Outside the town are the main supermarkets, all just minutes from the house.
The Montreuil-sur-Mer / Inxent area
One of the great things to do in France is to eat out and in our region you are spoiled for choice. In Montreuil-sur -mer we recommend The Bistroit, Le Patio, The Clos de Capacin.
You may want to splash out on a Michelin starred restaurants such as the Auberge de le Grenouilliere in La Madelaine-sous-Montreuil, Le Chateau or Le Jeraboam, (in the Hermitage Hotel), in Montreuil sur Mer or slightly further afield in Le Touquet, The Westminster or Le 91.
There are many good places to eat and drink in the area ranging from small local cafes to elegant restaurants.
And of course, we have the award winning Wine Society shop, located in Montreuil sur Mer at the Hermitage Hotel.
A must is a visit to the cheese shop, Caseus in the place du General de Gauille, as well as for the chocoholics the artisan chocolatier, Pierru Laurent PATISSERIE-CHOCOLATERIE at 14,rue Pierre Ledent.
Buying food locally
You could visit some of the markets heaped with local produce, they are a pleasure to walk round.
Maybe you like sea food, in which case a short drive to Etaples, (next to Le Touquet), would pay dividends as they have some of the best fish markets in France.
For meat, veg, watercress, (Cresson), fruit, honey and cheese, (miel & fromage), you have only to drive around the small roads along and around the valley to see signs where you can buy direct from the producer.
Golf, theme & amusement parks & steam train
There are excellent golf courses in this part of France. PGA competition standard St Omer is about 45 minutes by car, but other well known golf courses close by are Le Touquet, Hardelot, Wimereux, Fort Mahan, Nampont St.Martin
Catch the Vallée de l'Aa steam train at St Omer to Lumbres and back then spend the day around the old town and canal area. The region's most visited attraction is the marine world Nausicaa at Boulogne, 30 minutes drive. Or alternatively, take the train around The Somme estuary (Baie de Somme) at Le Crotoy and Saint-Valery.
War Graves & historic sites
Our holiday home in Inxent is ideally located for those interested in war graves, historic sites & military history. Agincourt and Crecy are very close. Arras, Vimy, Bethune, the Somme, Albert and many others can be visited easily. At Etaples, a working fishing port across the bridge from Le Touquet, there is a beatifully maintained graveyard and there are still concrete WW2 gun emplacements in the forest.
Boulogne & surrounding area
Many people think of Boulogne simply as a port of entry and somewhere to drive straight through en route south. However, this is a mistake as it is a vibrant interesting area with all sorts of discoveries waiting to be made.
Boulogne is the largest town near Inxent. As well as the port and marina there is a large shopping area running up the hill towards the Haute Ville, the Old Town. This is a maze of small roads and walkways full of restaurants and bars, antique shops and old houses. The Cathedral of Notre Dame dominates the Old Town and looks out over Boulogne. Inside, it has the 2nd largest dome in Europe and is well worth a visit as is the old chateau, (which is now a museum).
Just outside of Boulogne there are the hypermarkets, Citi De L'Europe and the Designer Outlet. There are all types of shops where you can get the latest fashion wear, furniture, bedding etc. At Carrefour & Tesco, in Citi Europe, there is a vast choice of wines/spirits & beers from around the world. There is another huge selection at the Auchan centre in Boulogne St. Martin.
Le Touquet is close by and is a bustling trendy town full of boutiques, bars and restaurants. There is a water park on the sea front for the children and fabulous beaches to wander along plus 2 casinos for anyone who might want to try their luck! Le Touquet is also famous for its golf courses. Go across the bridge & you will find the Etaples seafood restaurants and markets.

A Lovely week in a lovely place. The house is as good as it looks on the website and is packed full of pretty much everything that you will need for a period away, and if you find something 'missing' then hosts Michael and Vanessa are on hand to help out. Situated in the small village of Inxent, this is really a great place to be if you want to get away from it all. As demanded by my teenage son and his cousin, we spent 4 days on the beach which is a 25 minute drive away, but there's loads of wonderful countryside to explore plus towns nearby to visit (walled town Montreuil sur Mer being the closest). The information provided by Michael and Vanessa both before and during the stay is fantastically comprehensive, born out of 20 years of local experience and certainly helps you plan your time with them. Michael and Vanessa were the perfect hosts – it was a pleasure to meet both of you. Highly recommended – in fact we've already booked for next year. |

Nice to return to this charming cottage on the edge of the village of Inxent, in the beautiful Course Valley. The hosts are very welcoming and provide more than you need, but they do leave you to your own devices but are there if needed. It is a gret area with good walking in a lovely farming valley, but not far from the coast and the busy area of Le Touquest. Close, also, to Montreuil with shops and plenty of restaurants. Always look forward to returning there. |

Our stay in Inxent was really enjoyable. The Course Valley is a briliant base from which to explore. We made friends with local villagers, restauranteurs and shop keepers as a result of the excellent information supplied by the owners Mike and Vanessa. The accommodation is surrounded by a beautiful garden and is extremely quiet as it is set back from the quiet D road which runs the length of the attractive valley. This is not the average holiday gite - it really does have every item you need and is furnished to a very high standard. We came home and booked another week September! |
