Lamarque
About the home
Lamarque is a secluded and romantic 18th century property accessed by a 500 metre allée and set in ten acres of beautiful park with century old trees and wonderful hidden corners, walkways meander through the woodland.
The Chartreuse is adjacent to the manor house, has been completely refurbished, sleeps six and is available for year round rental. The accommodation comprises a comfortable reception area with TV, DVD and a sound system, a spacious fitted kitchen-come living area with country fireplace and a table seating six comfortably, three large and well proportioned bedrooms with period fireplaces and two shower rooms.
For summer 2009 we have renovated ‘The Priest's Room’ to yield a self-contained studio apartment with a large bed/sitting room, separate kitchenette and a showroom. The Priest room sleeps 2 + 2 (one double bed and one double sofa-bed). The Chartreuse can be rented with or without the Priest's Room.
Chartreuse guests share the estate with the Mark & Amy (and Skye and Flame, our two Gordon Setters) and are assured of a high level of privacy. There are several outdoor leisure areas including a private terrace with a barbecue and a swimming pool within a walled courtyard. Next to the swimming pool there is a small gym / exercise room with separate shower.

The Midi-Pyrenees / Gers region

The old historical region of Gascony, of which the Gers (Department 32) comprises the major part, was described by famous Algerian writer Abert Camus as 'Tuscany in miniature'. It has the highest concentration of bastide villages (around 100) in France. Unspoilt by motorways, mass tourism and major industry, it has a rich heritage, an exquisite landscape, superb climate, great regional food and wine, and natives who are friendly and welcoming! Once you have sampled the real France, you will not want to leave.
The weather in Gascony is generally sunny and Mediterranean from May to August (average 28C), peaking to temperatures in the mid-30's in July. August remains hot, with the occasional short-lived storm. April and October are pleasant, with an average of 22C, whilst late May and early September are warm and swimmable. Winters here are short, with cold snaps at times, and, just to keep us guessing, sometimes quite warm.
The Montreal du Gers area
"The Last Best Place..." a phrase that has come to epitomise the gently rolling countryside of Gers, formerly Gascogne, is located roughly equidistant between Bordeaux and Toulouse, some 50km south west of Agen and has become one of the most sought after regions in France for those seeking tranquillity and tradition in an exclusive environment. The proximity of the Pyrenees and the influx of Italian vignerons in the early 20th century enhance an already southern atmosphere, bringing nuances which have integrated comfortably in the Midi-Pyrenees, creating an open, friendly and peaceful environment. Fresh fruit and vegetables can be procured in the colourful daily markets, organic food shops and fresh fish are a part of life, along with fine local wines and delectable cheeses. An absence of mass tourism is a hallmark of the region which offers regular cultural events, rural walking pathways and an excellent 18-hole golf course within twenty minutes of Lamarque.
A Beautiful, unique and romantic property situated in the Midi-Pyrenees / Gers region, famous for Armagnac and the Three Musketeers. The nearby medieval Bastide of Montreal du Gers offers excellent basic facilities including bi-lingual doctor, a well stocked alimentation which is open 7 days a week, a boulangerie, boucherie, two restaurants, café, post office, pharmacy, newsagents and a beautiful 17th century church. A modest weekly market offering fresh produce is available on Friday mornings; other local markets are within easy driving distance. Condom, the sous-prefecture of the Gers, where there are more comprehensive facilities, supermarkets etc. is a 10 minute drive from Lamarque

Very comfortable property set amid the gently rolling fields of Gascony. Fully outfitted with private, natural stone walled pool & beautiful mature garden. Explored the region by bike and car - great food & wine en route! Loved sampling the armagnac! Plenty to do on-site (read, swim, play boules, croquet, badminton & favorite board games!). Gracious hosts Mark & Amy welcoming and attentive to any needs. Perfect vacation! |

Returning for our fifth visit, it only gets better. The owners give you all the privacy you want, but are there to help if you need assistance or advice. They have very good tips for restaurants and you will become an armagnac fan. It is the ideal place to read, swim and generally relax in peaceful surroundings. Living in the chartreuse is a pleasant experience of a stone house with massive walls, spacious rooms with high ceilings - wonderfully cool in summer. Enjoy a sundowner in the courtyard or while watching the sunset from the look-out point. Breakfast (after a swim) on the front terrace in the sun or in the shade of the nook between the walls of the old farm buildings. Home-grown entertainment included - just watch the chickens - the television stays switched off throughout the holiday. If you find the energy, visit the markets in nearby Eauze, Nérac or Condom. Montréal du Gers is a fascinating fortified village - call in at the small museum in the tourist office for a view of the mosaic floors excavated from the nearby roman villa at Seviac, which is also worth a visit on a fine day. |

A beautiful house set in its own parkland provided us with the most relaxing of holidays. The quality accomodation has that lovely French rustic appeal. The three large bedrooms, family style bathroom, large kitchen and living areas were all more than adequately equipped to make our stay feel as if we were in a five star hotel. The pool and decked area provided us with a lovely suntrap if we wanted. Our five year old twin boys were able to play safely in the pool. In the evenings we had dinner by candlelight next to the pool. The local area is rich in history with Medieval villages dotted around. The undulating countryside is covered in sunflowers. There are plenty of attractions to keep you busy. The very hospitable owners, Amy and Mark, are what you want them to be - there for you when you need them and discreet when you don't. Their welcome pack is comprehensive and answered all our questions. |
Guestbook for Lamarque
We just wanted to thank you both for the most wonderful stay. The way you have set the Chartreuse up and attended to every detail is fantastic. We could not fault it in any way. It was so well equipped, so beautiful. We have been raving about it to friends and sending them the link. And your pool - I don't believe there are many better spots in the world to spend a hot summer's day. Keith and Julie B.
