Home description
We converted the barn about 15 years ago, and have tried to retain as much as possible of the original (even using the original sheep folds for the terrace!) Since then we have installed a swimming pool, which has transformed the ambience and now provides a lovely cooling space during the hot summer. We have also, largely thanks to our late father & step-mother, made the garden into a very attractive feature.
Les Bonnins is a small hamlet of about nine farmhouses situated in the west of the Dordogne, a beautiful rural area with a mixture of old villages and market towns. Neighbouring working farmers have a range of small farmyard animals, including a number of dogs used for the local hunt.
Note that the nearest shops are 4.5K away, so you will probably want to drive each day for your breakfast purchases. We do have a bike, however, so hardy souls might prefer this as a mode of transport. The main road is pretty well flat all the way into St Méard or Villefranche in the other direction.

The Aquitaine / Dordogne / Dordogne region
Aquitaine in the southwest boasts 180 miles of sandy beaches which stretch along the Atlantic coast. Stylish seaside resorts like Biarritz and Arcachon are scattered along the coast, which offers the best surfing conditions in Europe. The region’s prosperous capital, Bordeaux, is renowned for its wines, including Medoc and St Emilion. Specialities of the area include rich truffles and foie gras. There are also fine golf courses to be found in its environs.
The western Dordogne has rolling countryside, which makes it ideal for active holidays. Wine buffs will enjoy the proximity of both Bordeaux and Bergerac wines, with many properties open for visits. There are also historic towns, such as Perigueux and Bergerac, to visit, plus pre-historical sites such as Les Eyzies.
It is an easy drive to the main Dordogne gorge, and the main towns such as Domme and Sarlat.
Montpon / St Meard de Gurcon area
Bicycles and ponies are available locally for hire. Many lovely local walks.
There are colourful and bustling markets on different days in most of the local towns and are well worth a visit. The local tourist offices in Montpon and Ste Foy la Grande have details of local events and places of interest.
The nearest village for everyday purchases is St Méard de Gurçon, a distance of 4.5 kilometers. Many good restaurants in local villages as well as the two nearest towns of Montpon (including one Michelin starred) & St e Foy.
Before the main tourist season starts there are often local events, where brocantes and 'vide greniers' (garage sales) are held. On Mayday in particular, many local towns make huge 'aillet' omelets, served with local wine and crusty bread. Aillets are garlic tops, and look a little like leeks. They are very tasty!
We have recently made contact with a Frenchman, Olivier Tombu, who gives tutored wine tastings in French or English. He will come to you at a small extra cost, or groups can visit him at his centre in Pomerol. His company is caled 'Vinotaste' at 34 route de Catusseau, www.vinotaste.fr.
