The Languedoc-Roussillon / Herault region
Languedoc-Roussillon has got it all - national parks containing mountains, beaches and wetlands; medieval villages, Roman cities and masses of rolling vineyards dotting the rugged but extremely beautiful countryside. Likewise Nimes, Pezenas, Perpignan, Carcassonne, Narbonne, Sete and Agde are all within a short drive, each offering a unique insight into life here.
Then there's the weather. Mild winters and hot summers - cooled by Mediterranean winds. And there's the glorious in-between months, when things are a little bit quieter but the region really comes into its own.
Montpellier area
Montpellier's history goes right the way back to the 11th century, when it became renowned as a trading post and centre of science and medicine. 'Ecusson' - the town's medieval core - is waiting to be discovered, with its international art gallery, medical museum, 12th century cathedral and parks, together with numerous gift shops and up-market boutiques.
There are too many activities to mention in Montpellier alone, but some of the highlights include dance, music and opera festivals, guided tours of the medieval town centre, together with a highly developed cycle path network that can be explored using the city's inexpensive bike rental service.
On top of that there is also an exhaustive list of trips to make outside of Montpellier, including the glorious coastline with long stretches of golden sand beaches starting just 6kms away, the fortress city of Carcassonne, the Roman city of Nimes, Norman Foster's Millau Bridge, the Camargue, the Cevennes, the wonderful fishing port of Sete, the amazingly well preserved village of Saint-Guilhem-Le Desert and the famous Roman acqueduct Pont Du Gard, to name just a few.
How to get there
There are direct flights to Montpellier from Paris, Gatwick and Stansted in the UK, Frankfurt-Hahn in Germany, Charleroi-Brussels in Belgium and Copenhagen in Denmark. Other nearby airports include Nimes and Beziers-Agde, which are both approximately 50 minutes drive from Montpellier, as well as Carcassonne, Perpignan and Marseilles, which are all under two hours away. All of these airports are served by Ryan Air and Air France, with Easy Jet flying from Montpellier to Gatwick. Likewise, there is also a direct TGV train service to Paris.

Further details indoors: The apartment has a completely separate entrance from the small road on the other side of the villa and a private garden of 150 square metres that contains a sunny terrace with garden furniture and barbecue area.
It can comfortably accommodate six people, having three bedrooms - two double bedrooms and a smaller room with bunk beds - one family bathroom, an en suite shower and toilet and a large open plan lounge and kitchen area of approximately 40 square metres. The total area of the apartment is over 90 square metres.
The lounge consists of two comfortable family settees, a hi-fi, cd player and TV, while the kitchen is fully equipped with crockery, pots, pans, utensils, microwave, full oven and hob, fridge-freezer and washing machine.
Further details outdoors: Lovely private patio and garden area of 150 square metre, completely private with sun all day and plenty of shade. The patio area provides the perfect space for outside dining, complimented by outside table and chairs and a barbecue.

“We spent a week at this lovely place in june 2009. Montpellier can be quite hot in the summer, so we spent a great deal of time by the pool, suitable for both grown ups and kids. It also has a fixed barbeque. The inside was spacious and newly renovated, and the owner responded quickly if we had any needs. He even made a bike available for us the whole week. Car is advised, but you are close to both the city and the sea. In short: Troublefree, pleasant, way above expected. Definetly recommended.” Karl Nystøyl and family, Oslo, Norway
"We had a wonderful stay in Montpellier. The apartment was spacious and clean with comfortable sofas and beds and had all the necessary kitchenequipment etc. We enjoyed taking breakfast and meals at the outdoor table.Simon the landlord was most congenial and was helpful on many occasions, i.e. we asked for some sun beds which he got for us right away. It is good to have a car or scooter if you want to return later than 8:30 from thecity centre as night buses are limited. The neighbourhood is very quiet and there was a small complete shopping centre within a couple of minutes walk as well as the local bus service into town which we used a lot. "Our entire family had a wonderful time while staying at Villa Suzanne! The accommodations are spacious, well equipped, and tastefully decorated. We especially enjoyed the lovely trees (such a variety!) from the terrace. The children couldn't have been happier than when splashing about in the pool, and we adults loved basking in the sun while they played. I highly recommend Villa Suzanne for families or groups wanting to visit the south of France for relaxation and culture. While it's very nice to laze about the villa, we were also pleased to be an easy bus ride away from the centre of Montpellier, which is such a beautiful, vibrant city. And the region has so much to offer as well: Roman ruins, outdoor activities, medieval villages, beaches ... what more could anyone want? There were many things I hoped to do but didn't manage to fit in, so I look forward to coming back. To top it all off, Simon was such a gracious and helpful host.
