About this location
The Languedoc-Roussillon region
The Languedoc-Roussillon has much to offer as a holiday destination, including fabulous beaches and enough sightseeing to keep everyone happy. In this sun-drenched corner of the south of France, you'll find sandy beaches lapped by the Mediterranean sea, wild open spaces in the Cevennes hills, monasteries and castles for Languedoc sightseeing, and vineyards where you can taste some of the very renown local wines. Montpellier is one of the liveliest cities in the south of France, and the capital of the Languedoc Roussillon. The centre of activity is the Place de la Comedie. This large 'Place' is buzzing days and nights with bars and cafés and close to the chic shopping streets, the Museums (Musée Fabre) and the Opera Houses. Less than an hour and a half from Montpellier, you can feast your eyes on such destinations as Sete, Pezenas, St Guilhem le Desert, St Martin de Londres, the Pont du Gard, Carcassonne walled Medieval City, and the Canal du Midi. And even closer, just on the other side of the Thau Lagoon, you can visit authentic fishing villages, with oyster farmers, and vineyards who welcome visitors year round.
