La Braudière

About the home
La Braudière was built in the 19th century, to operate the barrier over the railway line. Nowadays, the railway is just a distant memory, leaving a legacy of miles of leafy, tree lined paths, meandering through woods and open countryside.
This sturdy stone house, with its sky blue shutters, thick stone walls and buttery yellow exterior, has been thoughtfully renovated, with lots of original features – a successful blend of original character and modern comfort. It is simply and tastefully furnished, and the overall effect is bright, light and fresh.
Set on its own, the house is surrounded by fields, tracks, rivers and woodlands, perfect for exploring by foot or bike. You're not too far from civilisation, however, as only 2 kms away is the village of La Trimouille, where you will find shops, restaurants, cafes, boulangerie, pharmacy, tourist office, and cinema.
Located in the department of the Vienne, with its peaceful countryside, ancient castles and medieval towns and villages, La Braudière provides a brilliant base for a great holiday. Enjoy the local amenities - the aroma of baguettes, freshly baked in the nearby boulangerie, is truly mouthwatering. Settle into the slower pace of French life with a leisurely amble through the lanes, rich with wildlife. Explore the many tourist attractions of the area. Or simply sit in the garden, with a glass of wine, enjoying the spectacular night skies. Whatever you enjoy, there is something for everyone.

The Poitou-Charentes / Vendee / Vienne region

The Poitou Charente is a region rich in culture, activities and natural beauty. Known as one of the sunniest regions in France, it is found on the Atlantic coast, and is surrounded by the chateaux of the Loire valley to the north, the vineyards of Bordeaux to the south, with the rolling countryside of the Limousin and the mountains of the Massif Central to the East.
Inland, you will find the tranquil and historic department of the Vienne, with it’s peaceful countryside, rich in wildlife, ancient castles and numerous medieval towns and villages. It is also often known as The Land of Futuroscope - one of the most popular tourist attractions in France.
The Montmorillon / La Trimouille area
There is much to see and do in the area.
The immediate location is perfect for walking and cycling. Setting out from the La Braudière, you can wander or cycle for miles along the former railway tracks, towards the pretty village of Journet with it’s bar/restaurant, in one direction, or La Trimouille in the other. In addition, the area has many designated walks.
There are a number of picturesque and historic towns to visit.
Montmorillon – the peaceful “City of Writing” is just 20 minutes away. This has winding alleys, ancient churches and a fabulous setting on the edge of the River Gartempe. It has a large tourist office, full of ideas for things to see and do.
About the same distance away, Le Blanc is a bustling, typically French town – with lots of food shops and restaurants, a market, and great walks along the river.
A little further away is Chauvigny. This busy town also has a great market, and a large choice of restaurants, catering for all tastes. Most notably, though, are the castle ruins, perched high on the hill, with their panoramic views of the city. The spectacular falconry show is an amazing sight, with birds of prey, and many other bird species from around the world, circling round the castle ramparts!
For an active, family holiday, there are many possibilities.
There are a few swimming lakes in the general area, with man made beaches and other facilities. The nearest is Chaillaic (25 minutes away), which has a swimming lake with water chute, sandy beach and playground. There is also a café and a large, grassy, picnic area.
About the same distance away there is a great outdoor activity centre - Lathus. Here you can go canoeing, kayaking or swimming. There is also a large horse riding centre and many other activities available, such as archery, VTT, hiking and small animal farm.
There are several animal parks in the area.
The L’Ile aux Serpents, with its 60 species of snakes, lizards, tortoises and numerous other reptiles, is almost literally on your doorstep. Feeding time is an experience not to be missed. Located just outside La Trimouille, this fascinating museum is just 5 minutes drive. The Planète de Crocodiles is just 40 minutes away, housing an impressive selection of crocodiles and alligators, in a lush, tropical setting.
A little further is The Vallée de Singes (Monkey valley), unique in France. It is set in a large, wooded park, with 30 species of primates, and boasts the largest Chimpanzee Territory in Europe.
Last, but certainly not least, is Futuroscope – 1 hour away. This famous theme park provides an amazing day out for all the family. An unmissable experience, including breathtaking shows and interactive adventures in giantscreen format.
