About the home

*******Due to a cancellation , this spacious house that sleeps 15 is available again ,Now 1900 eur per week in July .*****
Villa Orchidee is a spacious renovated farmhouse with 6 ensuite bedrooms ,suitable for 3 families to share or 5 couples wanting to hoiiday together . A 7th bedroom (not ensuite) with a double bed can be made available on a request for a small supplement so that the house can accommodate an additional 2 persons . It is one of 3 holiday homes with shared pool at Le Four a Sel, a riverside property located just 5 minutes from shops at Montignac.The setting is peaceful and stunning :15 acres of private grounds with wonderful views of cornfields from the bedroom window.The house still retains its original features of oak beams & ochre coloured stone walls .Though we are by the river, the area around the gites, pool and garden is fenced so you can relax knowing the kids are safe .The 10m x 4m swimming pool is also alarmed and fenced for additional security . Our location is excellent, secluded but not isolated with many sites just 30 minutes away so you won't need to drive too far to get back to your gite and jump into the pool to cool down.You can walk to a bakery for fresh baked croissants as well as to a bar/restaurant . Accommodation comprises:
• Two Double bedrooms(each with a double bed)
• Two Triple Bedrooms (with a double bed and a single bed)
• Family room consisting of 2 rooms interconnecting. The first room has a double bed and it interconnects to a 2nd bedroom with 3 single beds,perfect for families with very young children
All rooms above are ensuite.
* a 7th bedroom with a double bed, no private bathroom
• Dining area/Lounge – very spacious can seat up to 30 people. Two rooms have their own private entrance leading onto the courtyard. TV with english satellite channels in the lounge.
Available all year, all bedrooms have wall mounted electric heaters and there is a woodburner stove in the lounge for the cooler months. Our facilities onsite provide sufficient entertainment for everyone.

The 3 houses can be rented indiividually or altogether , allowing several families or groups friends to holiday together and still maintain their privacy and personal space. The property can accommodate up to 30 people- ideal for large gatherings such as reunions, a birthday celebration, weddings or school groups.

Le Four a Sel is in the village of Aubas , a small village beside the Vezere river. This is an ideal base to explore the Dordogne where you can take gentle walks or cycle through the beautiful pastoral countryside,sample the region's gastronomic delights which France is known for like truffles, foie gras,walnut oil, or discover bygone times and history in any of the numerous chateaux and prehistoric sites many of which are just 30 minutes way. Surrounded by cornfields and open countryside, you can dine al fresco outside your gite, have a picnic or BBQ or try some fishing beside the Vezere river . Fruit trees in the orchard provide shade as well as fruits that guests can help themselves to when in season(cherry,pears,plums,walnuts, apples,hazelnuts,chestnuts). For golf lovers, two 18 hole golf courses are just a 40 minute drive . Private Fishing is available on site. Fishing licenses & bait can be purchased in Montignac

Loads of parking available, enough to accommodate camper vans and /or trailers. We also provide renting facilities on-site for you to leave your trailer so you can travel to other parts of the region.

We are flexible on rental dates outside of the high season(July August) and can negotiate rates for dates and occupancy to suit your needs. June-August- changeover day is on Saturday.
Smoking inside the house is prohibited but is permitted outside( in the covered terrace). The rate is for 15 people. If the 7th bedroom is used, there is a small supplement(please enquire for details)

Short breaks(4 days) or long lets at special rates. Special rates if reduced occupancy during certain periods. Please do not hesitate to enquire if you have specific requirements.

Conditions

30% deposit required upon booking. A security deposit of 400 euros(£350) is required with the final balance and will be returned no later than 1 week after departure.
Final payment of the balance is payable 12 weeks before arrival. End of stay Cleaning charge is payable on arrival.
From June- September, there is a french stay tax .70 per adult per day(anyone older than 13 years)
Please note that our rates our published in euros.We accept payment in pounds but the exchange rate will be that defined by our bank on the day the booking is confirmed and not the rate displayed by Holiday Lettings

The Aquitaine / Dordogne / Dordogne region

The Dordogne region provides an incredible spectrum of interesting sites and activities. It has castles that rival the Loire:from fairytale (like Chateau Milandes-former residence of Josephine Baker(famous actress/singer) ,to flambuoyant(like Hautefort) and fortresses like Castlenaud. When it comes to prehistory,it is in a league of its own .It houses the most magnificent vestiges of the Palaeolithic era in Europe , troglodyte shelters and caves,the most famous being Lascaux, just 20 minutes away, containing polychrome renderings of 15,000-year-old galloping horses, reindeer, bison, and ibex.

In the area, you will find crystalline caves,castles and fortresses which offer an exceptional variety of landscapes, architecture and pages from the history of France. It has magnificent gardens,like the Gardens of Marquessac,which stands 130 meters above the river,and unveils an exceptional view on the entire valley. The Aquitaine contains 13 of the " Most beautiful villages in France", 8 of these are in the Dordogne. Beynac is one of them,made famous by movies like Chocolat and Joan of Arc.

All throughout the area, you will pass picture postcard villages like Sarlat(just 25 minutes away) , with golden-ochre stone houses and flower-festooned squares, and along the way ,the scenery is breathtaking.
For wine lovers, Bergerac and Cahors is a close by. The whole area is known for the richness and quality of its food .There are many excellent restaurants, several with Michelin stars, where the foie gras, truffles, cabecou goats cheese and other delicacies can be enjoyed.

April is already warm here . In Spring,(May, June) and Autumn(September,October) the countryside is more lush and the scenery even more beautiful, since the daylight is slightly less harsh than in the summer, a perfect time for walking and cycling in the Dordogne. Temperatures in autumn and spring are 21-26 degrees, with clear blue skies from dawn to dusk.

Summer is typically hot: 30-36 degrees with lots of activities around-food markets,and local art and music festivals with great atmosphere,giving you lots of opportunity to try the local perigordian cuisine and experience French rural life.

The Montignac / Aubas area

We are in Aubas, 2km from Montignac , a charming town with beautiful stone and timbered houses and lovely cafes and restaurants by the riverand site of the famous Lascaux caves .It has a lively market on Wednesdays.

The Montignac international festival in July is a week-long event that culminates in a wonderful fireworks display by the river.Street performers and bands are everywhere ,creating a wonderful festive ambience.The area around us offers a multitude of fascinating activities and sites no more than an hour's drive: troglodyte shelters, stalactite &stalagmite caves to fascinate children of all ages, stunning gardens, fairy tale castles, fortified towns built on cliffs with magnificent views of the valley,postcard scenery.

There is so much to see and do suitable for adults and children of all ages: Canoeing down the Dordogne, horse-riding, hot air ballooning, falconry displays, a corn maze,introductory workshops for wall paintings. There is an aquarium parc just 35 minutes away, with special events like dive feeding of sturgeon and carp and a diver show.Also nearby is the National Prehistory museum ,fascinating for the children

Sarlat, a medieval town is just half an hour away and has a huge Saturday market not to be missed. During the summer you will find many street performers and musicians entertaining in its square and cobbled alleys. Great atmosphere in the evenings. For wine lovers, Bergerac and Cahors are not far away (1.5 hrs) while Bordeaux, for beaches and more vineyards, is a 2 hour drive and can be done as a day trip.

There are many interesting festivals from June - September: Hat festival, Mime festival, scarecrow festival, Jazz Festival - as well as day and night markets to sample the local delicacies, cheese and wine. You will find that the 2 weeks is simply not enough to explore and enjoy this region.

Nearest airports are :
Brive Souillac Airport- just 40 minutes away. Cityjet operates this from Londoncity airport.Bergerac and Limoges - about 1.30 hr away. Also Bordeaux airport about 1.45 hrs away.
St. Malo is the nearest cross channel port and is about an 6.5 hour drive.Calais is about 8 hours away. If you go via the Paris Periphery , the car journey can be shortened by an hour.Cheap flights are provided by

“Comfortable Accomodation with an extensive range of on site activities and set in an excellent location” Our family group of 11 adults and 5 children ranging in age from 4-63 stayed in the Villa Orchidee for two hot weeks in August 2012, making full use of the swimming pool and the large covered area for al fresco dining and relaxing evenings. Owners Brenda and David were always friendly and approachable offering advice on local restaurants and sites to visit even helping with bookings for activities. Villa Orchidee is situated in a quiet rural area 3km from Montignac and is close to lots of historic sites in the Dordogne region.There is also canoeing ,water parks and tree top adventure parks close by.So we found lots to do. We had a fantastic holiday and thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

“Excellent gite in an excellent location with extensive facilities.” As a family group of 11 aged 2 to 70, we found Villa Orchidee to be a very pleasant one of three gites well spaced out so that privacy wasn't compromised and with the owners only a few yards away. The main living room easily accommodated the whole group sitting round one table. David and Brenda were always keen to help out whether with washing machines or map directions. Facilities included table tennis, handball practice net, children's swings and a BBQ by the river bank, swimming pool and large covered area for relaxing or picnicking. As a disabled person I would have liked to have had handrails to ease access to the main living room and kitchen which each have 4 steps. Villa Orchidee is well positioned with many attractions within reach by car, including the neighbouring attractive town of Montignac.
