The Aquitaine / Dordogne / Dordogne region
The Dordogne region has hot, sunny summers, with mild winter days and chilly nights. The area is filled with hundreds of stunning chateaux, rolling hills, pretty villages, markets, restaurants and historical sites. This area is also renowned for truffles, walnuts, duck, goose and foi gras.
Montignac is a pretty little town on the Vezere river, nestled between the mountains of the Massif Central in the Auvergne and the picturesque valleys of the Dordogne.
The region offers activities (or non-active!!) for everyone. Canoeing, golfing, cycling and walking; world renowned historic caves (Les Ezyies, Lascaux), - or simply just relax, enjoying scenery and market days - and a glass of French wine and local produce. The food in the area is fantastic, and so many different places to try.
Montignac / Aubas area
On Wednesdays and Saturdays Montignac comes alive with it''s markets. Canoe rental is available on the Vezere river in the centre of Montignac, and the nearest golf course is just a 30minute drive away, with a water park almost next door to the course. (Ideal if some of your group prefer swimming to golfing). The Lascaux caves are very close by, and the Vezere Valley is filled with many other historical sites, particularly Les Ezyies and it's museums and the magnificent Roque St Christophe. Sarlat, with it's renowned Saturday market is a stunning town to visit - lots of history and beautiful buildings. Tamnies, (20minute drive), is a lakeside beach with a beautiful circular lake walk. Heavenly to lunch at one of the lakeside picnic tables, or even the restaurant at the local hotel. Vezere international festival of music during June, July and August. Every July Montignac becomes a vibrant town with it's colourful festival of traditional folk music and dancing. It follows Aquitaine traditions that trace their roots back to before the Norman conquest. French village life at its best.
