The Aquitaine/Dordogne region

This beautiful 200 year old stone holiday home is situated in the picturesque countryside of the Perigord Noir with breathtaking unspoilt views of the valley where you can watch the swallows (Les Hirondelles) swoop. Having been lovingly restored for 2008 it now provides all the rustic charm and modern convenience you would wish for your holiday destination and is perfectly suited for a family of four or two couples. Foie gras, truffles, mushrooms and incredible restaurants abound making this region a gastronomic paradise. While for wine lovers, a day spent exploring the prestigious appellations such as Pecharmant, St Emilon, Monbazillac and a trip to the 'Maison des Vins' in Bergerac can't be missed.

The historic towns of Domme (the gated towers in the city walls were used by the Knights Templar as prisons), Sarlat and Beynac are all within comfortable driving distance. Considered to be one of the finest restored medieval market towns in Europe, full of excellent restaurants and with more listed buildings per square foot than any other town in Europe, Sarlat is not to be missed. While Beynac, with its narrow cobblestone streets leading up to the formidable 11th century chateau, has provided the picturesque backdrop for films such as 'Joan of Arc' and 'Chocolat'.

Montignac

We have previously hosted a CNN reporter who bravely took on a stage of the Tour de France and more wisely spent plenty of time relaxing at Les Hirondelles, exploring the area and enjoying all it has to offer. You can find out more about his experience here:

http://edition.cnn.com/2008/TRAVEL/08/14/cycling.france.cheese/index.html

The pretty town of Montignac, less than 10 minutes drive from Les Hirondelles, has several very good restaurants, a fantastic little bakery selling wonderful cakes and breads and a bustling market with local produce on the riverside twice a week.

Within a short drive are the rivers Vezere and Dordogne on which one can hire canoes, sample the excellent fishing on offer, picnic on the river bank, swim in the clear waters and enjoy some of the most beautiful scenery in France.

Montignac also has a great public swimming pool with diving - http://www.ville-montignac.com/sports/piscine which we have some pictures of in the photo gallery.

Other watersports can be enjoyed at Thenon leisure lake a mere 10 minutes from the house (which also has sandy shores for bathing) and just 25mins from the house in Tamniès there is another large fresh water lake with a life guarded sandy beach and excellent facilities (showers, changing rooms, etc).

Known as 'the world capital of prehistory', over 100 prehistoric sites are present in the area. Le Roque de Saint Christophe, containing a network of caves that once sheltered over 3000 people, and the limestone caves of Lascaux, with its cave paintings dating back 14,000 years, are two of the most popular tourist attractions in France.

Ticks the box for tranquillity. Up the hill in a hamlet. But the beds in the Gite are uncomfortable. We could not sleep. Kitchen a bit sparse on cooking utensils. This place has huge potential in … More

"An amazing place to stay"

My husband and I love this part of the World and had an amazing week at Les Hirondelles a couple of years ago. It was without a doubt the best property we had rented in the area so were devastated to discover that the owners Chris and Jane had decided to stop renting it out for holiday lets when we contacted them the following year. I am pleased to say that after 3 years of waiting we were informed that Les Hirondelles was being rented once more and we jumped at the chance of booking it again. I was worried I may have been remembering the property with rose-tinted lunettes but I shouldn't have. The location is as good as ever of course but the property was also just as it was on our first visit – great! We spent our days doing some of the local walks, visiting some of the historic towns (Sarlat is a MUST visit) or relaxing in the garden followed by evenings by the log burner. I cannot recommend Les Hirondelles highly enough and am delighted that our favourite gite is now back – we certainly will be.

"Tranquil property in lovely peaceful location"

Four of us stayed back in 2011 and enjoyed our time immensely.

The property is a fairly short drive from Bergerac airport, and good directions were provided.

Jane and Chris were very helpful and left good information re local items of interest which we used a lot.

There is a really nice bathroom and open plan living downstairs which lends itself to group socialising in the evening really well. Being out in a small hamlet one also has the benefit of complete silence at night. The property was very well kept/tidy.

You will need a car to get to the shops and sites, but what great places there are to go with world class caves, picturesque towns/villages and good food.

Otherwise you can sit back with some food and wine and enjoy the scenary and peace at the property itself. Our party of four mid thirties lads really enjoyed the break, and it was a change from the normal Spanish trip we usually take.

We intend to visit again 2013/2014 having decided we would like to explore the area more.
