The house is surrounded by beautiful gardens all enclosed by hedges and stonewalls. The gated, very private 8x5m pool is set in a mainly walled garden at the end of the house. The outside areas are amply supplied with very comfortable, finest quality furniture as well as poolside chairs and loungers. There are seating/dining areas outside the kitchen, around the pool and on the huge loggia with views across the valley. The property stands on a tiny country lane only used occasionally by the postman! Beyond it woodland falls away to a pretty valley - lovely for walks to the frog pool or the butterfly fields. There is a barbecue for visitors' use, and a car port plus other parking space. On our land in front of the house there is also your very own 'bouleodrome' (for petanque!) which doubles as a Badminton court.
The Aquitaine/Dordogne region
For the most part the Dordogne is gloriously slow-moving and the locals so very friendly and polite - it's like stepping back in time. While in the UK the population density is 383 per square kilometer in the Dordogne it's only 45; about the same as in England in 1340 so sightseeing and moving around in the unspoiled countryside is a joy. The local flora and fauna is truly abundant and agin like going back in time. Sometimes just sitting in the garden, listening to the birds, watching the butterflies (masses) and smelling the roses is just the job.
There's absolutely bags for families to do while adults have masses of culture to devour. Certainly it would take weeks to cover everything that's on offer.
Montignac is a delightful town market of medieval origin with the river Vezere running through it. Interesting variety of shops and restaurants. It is just outside Monignac that the famous Lascaux caves are found.
Thenon is quiet town providing our local shopping - market day is Tuesday.
La Vieielle Ferme is within the commune of Ajat which has an ancient fortified church and a history of the Knights Templar.
Castles like Richard the Lionheart's at Beynac were built and razed and built again. To the north the wonderful Hauteforte offers more tourist opportunities.
The town of Ruffignac (large Sunday market) was burnt to the ground by the Nazis as a reprisal against the French Resistance which was very strong very strong in the south west of France.fortified like Domme.
Hautefort famous for both it's gardens and the house itself, is another local destination.

"A peaceful, stylish and comfortable home for a really relaxing family holiday"
We had a wonderful stay at La Vieille Ferme in August. The house is beautiful, stylishly decorated with art throughout, with lovely cool stone floors. It is tucked down a country lane and is extremely quiet. The only car that passed the whole week was the post van.
The house feels very spacious inside. The kitchen is huge, the lounge is cosy but probably our favourite place to sit and eat was the loggia. The outdoor sofas there have a great view of the valley and it is a beautiful spot, lit up by candles at night.
We loved the pool. It is in a sunny spot at the side of the house and it too looks gorgeous lit up at night. There were plenty of pool toys provided, as well as DVDs and books.
This was our first visit to the Dordogne area and the information provided by the owners told us just what we needed to know. The local town with supermarket and bakers is a couple of miles away and the main sights of the Dordogne are only short journeys away. There were markets in the local towns and villages nearly everyday and enough pre-historic attractions to fill many holidays.
Luckily, the weather was hot and sunny for most of our week. The bedrooms all have fans and there are plenty of shady spots to relax in the grounds.
We were an extended family group, ranging from 7 to 83 and all of us had a fantastic time at La Vieille Ferme. The owners were delightful to deal with and we can fully recommend this home for a very relaxing holiday.

"Arriving at La Vieille Ferme we gave a deep, relaxing sigh while saying "Ah,oui!""
It was everything we expected and much more. The photo's, while beautiful, do not do this spacious yet cosy property justice. We cannot say enough about this conveniently located yet peaceful, tranquil and beautiful place. The views are amazing. It's impossible to list everything we liked about the property here but suffice to say that there was absolutely nothing we disliked.
We were particularly enamoured with the well-equipped kitchen as, while having everything we needed it acted as our sunlit, morning, gathering place and around the generous, antique, solid wood table that took center-stage; we made our plans for the day. We like to cook and we like to drink local wines and in this kitchen we were able to 'cook up a storm' and enjoy wines from local vineyards. We had occasion to light the fire in the comfortable and cosy living room and we toasted our toes on a couple of chilly evenings. The very private pool and walled garden with sunlight and/or shade, were particularly well received and used by all in our 3 generation, family group. We used three of the bedrooms and all were good-sized, comfortable and beautifully furnished and decorated. The clever use of original features in the house, like the plentiful roof beams, gave it the original French charm we were looking for.
The property is conveniently placed for wonderful walks in the countryside and just a very short car journey away are markets selling local produce, in different villages depending on the day of the week. Plenty of chances to try out the French language! There are beautiful, historic towns nearby like Montignac, with its river, ancient buildings, fortifications, chateaux and great restaurants. We also visited the stunning and intriguing Lascaux Caves as well as other cave sites. We could not believe just how much there is to see and do within just minutes of the property, considering how 'tucked away' it actually is. We wanted to explore rural France and to be based in a beautiful cottage and we got all we wanted.
We have no hesitation in recommending this property to friends and family and we would certainly rent it again ourselves.

"Beautiful and tranquil with everything we could wish for on tap!"
This is obviously a second home rather than a holiday let - it's so comfy and perfectly designed. We spent mornings lolling in cafes and mooching around markets, afternoons by the pool, cocktail hour up on the loggia and evenings by the BBQ! We ventured out canoeing down the Vezere river and explored Hautefort chateau (lovely cafe/shop tucked away in the village!). The nearby cave paintings blow your mind and the tree top adventure in Thenon makes your knees knock! There was even a bit of slobbing in front of the TV!

"Absolutely perfect holiday - the house is lovely, the pool is great and the area has lots to do"
We stayed at La Vieille Ferme in 2011 and again in 2012 because we had such a lovely time the first year. The house is really lovely, beautifully decorated and extremely comfortable. We especially loved the big, cool kitchen. There are lots of outside spaces to eat - the table under the canopy at the back where we often had lunch and then a balcony at the front, looking out onto the trees, where our two boys liked to have their tea. The pool is brilliant especially for small children as it has shallow steps leading into it, and is extremely secure with walls all the way round and a big door with a bolt high up. Our two boys, now 6 and 4, had a wonderful time. There are nice walks to do, looking for frogs in the water tank, crickets on the path on the way down, and an old mill pond with huge fish and sometimes a heron. If it rains, there is lots to do in the area - Over the two years, we went to the Aquarium and Reptile House in Le Bugue which was great, a Pre-History Park with models of Neanderthal man, mammoths etc and the village in the cliffside. The nearby town is a 5-minute drive away with two boulangeries for morning croissants, and a really good supermarket. We have the happiest memories of our holidays at La Vieille Ferme and I am sure we will go back.

Beautiful house. Great access to very quiet lanes for cycling. Lovely pool. Great for extended families of travelling with friends as lots of room and opportunity for privacy. Fab for young kids as no busy roads and safe. Great 'Go Ape' type park very close by.

"Perfect Dordogne Location and the best of comfort and facilities"
This place ticks all the boxes - lovely heated pool, with a good mixture of outside spaces - boules pitch, bbq area, shady seating, sunbathing terrace, it even has a covered outside dining area/gin terrace with stunning views over the valley.
Indoors gets even better with spacious kitchen and living room, good en-suite facilities in all of the bedrooms, all recently renovated to a very high standard of decor and equipment.
It is set in a very rural location set in a hamlet of a handful of properties, just a couple of minutes away from Thenon for all your daily shopping needs, plus a great weekly market. Montignac is 15 mins and Sarlat about 30 mins away so ideally located to make the most of the all The Dordogne has to offer.
I'm struggling to come up with any negatives - it really is as lovely as it sounds.

"A Great New Year"
We had a wonderful relaxing New Years break. This is perfect place to stay with roaring fires (lots of wood supplied) a huge open fireplace in the cosy living room, with a wood burner in the large well equipped kitchen/ dining room. We enjoyed long lingering meals in the spacious kitchen all seated at the splendid refectory table. Our stay had the very best of country house living, comfort, ease and a great ambiance.
The bedrooms are delightful, very pretty with comfortable beds and ensuite bathrooms.
The villa is exquisitely furnished and not at all like a holiday let, but very much a warm family home with all modern facililties. The surrounding countryside was peaceful and tranquil with fantastic walks.
We are looking forward to our next holiday in the Spring.
