Home description
Gorgeous French farmhouse that has been sympathetically renovated in the local style and is full of character — beams, vaulted ceilings, wooden floors, old doors and plenty of nooks and crannies to explore.
Spread over three floors, the house sleeps up to 12 people in six bedrooms. It's an ideal self-catering property for several families holidaying together or for groups of friends, offering flexible accommodation to suit a wide range of needs. La Maison Clarée is a superb place for a relaxing getaway, whether to enjoy snow sports in winter, cycling and walking in summer, or the fabulous mountain scenery all year round.
La Maison Clarée was built in the eighteenth century and originally accommodated a family with nine children and all their livestock. Its storage areas also provided room for their tools, supplies and fodder. Nowadays, its characteristic vaulted rooms, thick walls, beautiful old doors, quirky little windows and wooden floors provide a wonderful setting for a mountain holiday — cosy and warm in winter, cool and stylish in summer.

The Provence Alpes Cote d'Azur / Hautes-Alpes region
The Hautes-Alpes benefits from the sunny Provencal weather, and the region's delicious cuisine, yet also has its own unique alpine atmosphere and stunning scenery.
There are over 30 different ski resorts in the area with a wide variety of pistes suitable for all standards. There are many other activities on offer throughout the year and it is a fantastic summer destination.
Montgenevre area
Les Alberts (1400m above sea level) is a small, quiet village in the beautiful valley of Névache in the French Alps, close to the Italian border. It is a ten-minute drive from Briançon, an impressive fortified town (one of the highest in Europe) and a fascinating place to explore, with its quaint old streets and Vauban ramparts.
From Les Alberts the road winds a few kilometres up the mountainside to the pretty village of Montgenèvre (1860-2700m), a ski resort since 1907. Today, it offers a wide range of pistes and 34 lifts within its own system. Keen skiers can also tackle the Voie Lactée, which is a group of resorts providing a total of 400km of pistes that span the border between France and Italy.
Five minutes’ drive from Briançon is Serre Chevalier (1200-2830m), the world’s second largest ski area offering 250km of pistes, with an excellent snow record and over 300 days of sunshine a year. There is access by ski lift from Briançon itself or from a group of villages in the valley beyond. The pistes range from the easiest nursery slopes to an Olympic black, and snow cannons ensure snow throughout the season. There are ten restaurants d'altitude spread across the area when you want to stop for a drink, snack or more substantial meal.
For the more adventurous, you are only 50 minutes drive from La Grave, the extreme skier's paradise. There are many other resorts within an hour's drive, including the Three Valleys (via the Orelle telecabine) and les Deux Alpes
The Val Clarée is well known for nordic skiing, with 65km of runs starting across the road from La Maison Clarée in Les Alberts and leading right through the valley to the village of Névache itself and beyond. Other winter activities available in the area include ski mountaineering, luge and snow shoes.
In the late spring, summer and early autumn, the valley is a perfect place for hiking, horse-riding, cycling, canoeing, fishing and tennis. Higher up, there are more challenging walks and opportunities for climbing. There is also golf, white-water rafting, The area is home to a fascinating range of flora and fauna.
There are picturesque villages to explore in every direction, as well as the lovely old town of Briançon. Italy is only a half-hour drive away, making it easy to sample different local cuisine and shopping opportunities.
If you'd prefer a break from all this activity, you can simply sit out on the terrace at La Maison Clarée, soak up the sun, admire the spectacular scenery and enjoy the tranquillity of this charming corner of France.

You enter La Maison Clarée through a characteristic old double front door. Inside, there's a spacious entrance hall and beyond it a stunning vaulted sitting room. This huge yet comfortable room has a central stone pillar, a familiar feature of the mountain farmhouses in this area.
There are sofas and armchairs to relax in, a table for writing or games, a wood-burning stove and a plentiful supply of fuel to keep you warm and cosy in winter. In summer, this room provides a cool retreat from the heat of the sun.
On the lower floor are two bedrooms, the first a double and the second a twin that can also be made up as a double with linked beds. The two rooms are interconnecting, making them ideal for families, with an en-suite shower and loo. There's also a tiny 'coin cuisine' with a cooker and sink, where you can prepare drinks or snacks.
The two twin bedrooms under the eaves share a bathroom and separate loo. Both can be made up as doubles, with linked beds. These rooms have sloping wooden ceilings and one has an intriguing low doorway with a flight of wooden steps leading down into it — creating a real hideaway feeling.
There are two further double bedrooms, one en-suite, one a beautiful vaulted room, with its own shower room.
The sitting room boasts a flat-screen, surround sound TV. There is a separate iPod docking station for using around the house as required. There are books and games, as well as a piano. There is also wi-fi and a telephone.
The well-equipped kitchen and dining room are on the floor above the sitting room where another entrance brings you directly in from the south-facing terrace. There are garden tables and chairs for eating outside or just relaxing and enjoying the sun and the views.
Further details outdoors: There is a decked south-facing terrace, a long south-facing balcony, an additional paved area and table-tennis.
Children can play on the decked terrace or the paved area beside it. There is also very easy access to the village play area, with swings, slide, climbing frames and boules pitch, across the lane.

"... the grand kids loved the space and the potential for hide-and-seek!"

"Nous avons passés une semaine très agréeable dans un petit village calme et typique. Le Briançonnais possède un climat unique, les paysages sont merveilleux et on a la possibilité de parcourir à pied ou à vélo de nombreux sentiers et chemins qui nous font découvrir une faune et flore très riche."
