La Colmena
About the home
A fully equipped bungalow.
Guatemala is known for its picturesque villages, its ancient ruins and magnificent nature, but did you know that is also has world class beaches? There is a long, unspoilt coastline with surfing waves coming in from the Pacific. The water temperature is 26 centigrades all around the year, and the landscape is lush, tropical green. The river is just one mile inland from the beach, so you can paddle a canoe in the mangrove swamp and swim in the ocean surf on the same day. You usually have the beach for yourself, and you have a private pool and garden. The bungalow is perfect for a couple, but can also accommodate a family of eight.
Excursions inland, to Antigua, Maya villages or the volcanoes you see on the horizon can be arranged as one day excursions, or you can rent a car and go by yourself.

The Western Guatemala/Pacific Coast region
We are located on a long, clean beach on the Pacific. There is always a sea breeze along the coast, and midday temperatures fluctuate around 30 centigrades, night temperatures around 20.
The best months are November to March : Sunny, dry and pleasant. The rainy season starts late in April and lasts till October. It usually rains at night, and the weather is seldom hot and humid. You may shut the doors and put on the air condition, but it might be more comfortable with open windows and the sea breeze instead of the air conditioner. At night you may actually need a blanket.
The sea breeze also keeps the mosquitos away. Just use insect repellents during their “happy hour”: 5 to 7 PM, and always sleep under mosquito netting during the night.
The Monterrico area
Just a kilometer inland you are in another territory - an inland waterway that reminds you of Amazonas, with exotic birds, caimans and mangrove forest. You can rent a canoe and paddle around on your own or with a guide. There are wildlife reserves in both Monterrico and Hawaii.
Restaurants: There is a restaurant on the main road, 300 meters away. Monterrico, with several shops and restaurants, is 6 km from here. There are also a couple of excellent restaurants before Monterrico, "Dos Mundos" and "Dulce y salado" both at four kilometers distance.
