The Tuscany region
Blessed with beauty, wine and an unparalleled artistic legacy, Tuscany 's fabled rolling landscape has long been considered the embodiment of rural chic, a favourite of holidaying politicians and retired executives, while its cities harbour a significant slice of the world's Renaissance art.
Florence, in itself, boasts more world-class art than many countries. Siena with some of Italy's most striking Gothic architecture, Pisa, with much more to see than just the Leaning Tower, and the walls of Lucca, all an easy trip away.
Stupendous art, beautiful countryside, excellent wine and delicious cuisine is what this amazing region, from where the Renaissance spread out across Europe, is all about. From the Etruscan marvels at Fiesole to the della Francesca's of Arezzo, from the towers of San Gimignano to markets of Pistoia, there are delights for everyone.
The area borders the Siena region and the Creti Senesi.
Siena is wonderful, intact medieval city, still within its walls. It is magical to just wander through the winding streets, without traffic, always finding your way back somhow to the Campo, the magnificent piazza in the heart of the city, where the Palio, the wild horserace, is held twice a year, as it has been for centuries.
The Crete Senesi is the area of classic Tuscan vistas - cipress trees, roads curving through the gentle rolling hills.
In both areas there are wonderful villages and small towns waiting to be discovered.
