The Tuscany region
Visit Lucca with its wonderful ancient walls. This medieval splendid jewel is a unique experience: walk along the narrow streets and hire a bicycle to go round the medieval circle walls. You can find two rent-a-bike places in piazza Santa Maria, behind Borgo Giannotti. Along the walls stop for a coffee at San Colombano rampart, it has been recently renewed.
Dining out: you can taste typical Tuscan food at: la Buca di Sant'Antonio (about 50 euros each), gli Orti di via Elisa (about 30 euros each), Giulio in Pelleria (about 25) and Leo, piazza della Misericordia (about 20). The difference costs are due to the setting and quality of food.
Typical shops and delicacies: Veneta ice-cream shop, down the Caffè delle Mura rampart, Pinelli patisserie, famous for strudels; you can buy buccellato (aniseed and raisins cake) at Taddeucci, in Piazza San Michele. You must also try focaccia (flat bred) at Giusti bakers in Chiasso Barletti and pizza at Felice in via Fillungo.
Outside Lucca there are superb historical mansions (ville lucchesi): Villa Reale in Marlia whose park is a fine example of the Italian neoclassical garden, villa Mansi in Segromigno and villa Torrigiani in Camigliano. Rent a bike and ride around the walls and inside the cty.
A daily trip: enjoy a day out at the seaside in Viareggio or Forte dei Marmi in a lido where you can hire deck chairs and umbrella and walk down the beautiful promenade of Forte dei Marmi, one the most famous seaside resort where celebrities find peace and relaxation as it is fashionable and at the same time secretive. Try focaccine mignon at Valè baker, in the main square, they're really tasty.
Montecarlo is only 1,8 Km far from tenuta Albereta. This is a lovely walk starting from the wood behind the house, turn left at the gate towards the pinewood, the gravel street becomes a small path which goes through the wood and gets to the main road which from Marginone goes to Montecarlo.
It's a cute medieval village, from which there's a superb view of the surrounding countryside. If you like quality wine and excellent extra vergine olive oil you must absolutely taste them and buy some.
Montecatini. about 15 km., two motorway exits from Altopascio towards Florence. The town centre has fashion designer shops, spas and the outlet "Freeport"of Ralph Lauren, right outside the motorway exit (closed on Monday and Tuesday).
For those who love shopping there is another large outlet in Barberino del Mugello, the first motorway exit after Firenze, Bologna direction.
Montecatini alto. You can't miss, a few km. away, this tiny medieval village on the hill behind from which you have a wonderful view.
Take your children to Collodi, the birthplace of a famous writer for children, whose book, Pinocchio, is translated in many languages. The park dedicated to him shows the story's main character and you can often see puppet performances. The village which also has a baroque mansion whose garden is accessible, is not far from Marginone, toward Pescia.
Garfagnana. This mountainous area of the province of Lucca offers a lot of naturalistic attractions. For those who like climbing and hiking the Apuan Alps are an excellent opportunity. The highest peak is about 2000 meters. Besides, villages like Barga and Castelnuovo Garfagnana are worth a stop. Children and adults can enjoy the experience of the Grotta del Vento, a natural cave in Fornovolasco close to Gallicano, 40 minutes from Lucca.
Italian cuisine classes: I'm available to show and cook together with the guests a typical full Italian dinner or lunch, from starter to dessert. A Tuscan handmade pasta, lasagne with tasty meat or vegetable sauce, bean and vegetable soups, can be followed by a wide variety of organic meats, vegetable side dishes, dessert and the wine made by us. I only use organic ingredients coming from my own vegetable garden without pesticide, eggs and cheese sold by a local producer. I'll be glad, included in the cost of the classes, to let you try some of my products, particularly my excellent tomatoes (only in july and august).
You'll have the opportunity to taste a whole Italian dinner at home, I will bring some hot dishes ready from my house and I can teach you through experience two or three dishes, like focaccia or bread, tiramisu, meat with herbs and orange juice. Every guest who has tried this experience repeat my dishes at home, with success!
Costs: each class starts at 6 pm or 10 am and lasts for about 1 hour and a half. I charge 20 euros for adults and 10 euros for children aged from 4 to 14. Under 4-year-olds are free. If you are interested, please let me know in advance so that we can arrange the dates.
